Broken Brakes: Getting the Oliver 1550 to stop

To say the brakes were ineffective on the 1550 is an understatement. I didn't like the idea of the tractor leaving and not being able to stop, it snowed on Halloween, so the next day gave me shop time to get them fixed. This procedure is the same for most Olivers with disc brakes, with slight variations of some of the parts.

Again, you brought back many memories. Now do a set of brakes on a tractor with a mounted picker on it..... Loved the struggle bus. Ross is a very knowledgeable man, he has to be as all of those books that the kids on the bus threw and hit him on the head must have pounded some knowledge into his head. Great video.

When i did the brake seals on my Super 88, i was a tightwad and tried heating the discs up with a torch to cook the oil out. Ever after that the one side was extremely grabby so ended up replacing them anyway.

Great vid Chris! I wish I had a nickel for every time I did this to a 2*150 White. (aka 1355 MM with silver sheet metal) The "O:" ring would not hold and dumb oil on the breaks. Bad design IMO. I still have new old stock breaks for that tractor. The oil ate the breaks for lunch. Still it was a nice tractor.

The 2-155 was a huge improvement. we later owned two of those. Wish they would have put the 2-150 steering cylinders on the 2-155.We owned an early 2-155 and a 2-155 Sires III. The sires III had over 8000 hours when we let it go. We now have a 185 with FWA. It's a horse. @@ThatOliverGuyChris

I prefer the earlier 3 digit brakes, the hole for the adjuster is on the bottom so more of the debris and oil falls out and makes less of a mess inside. Either way at least brakes on Olivers were not so bad to work on compared to others.

My brake experience is limited to Olivers, so I'll take your word for it.

@ThatOliverGuyChris when we did grandpa's Minneapolis, we had to remove the wheels and take off the axle housings. Because Minneapolis loved their heavy cast iron, everything nothing was easy and was pretty much a 2-person job minimum. I had a John deere, and the only way to do that was to completely remove the brake assembly from each side of the read end before even inspection could be done.

@ThatOliverGuyChris I enjoy all tractors, but Oliver's are my favorite. They just operate so nicely, easy to work on most of the time, economical, etc... it is a shame that Oliver is not a current brand, given the benefits over other brands. Makes me want to own the name and rights and build tractors that a farmer can fix himself again. I think the market would support it.

The Oliver brakes are similar to the small frame IH brakes, Did Oliver make special shims like IH did? The IH ones are pricey. Have you ever had one of those rods with the clevis on the actuator snap? Seem to have problems once in a while with the IH ones. Really enjoy your videos. Used to have a 1750 and a 1755. Kind of miss them.
@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris 9 месяцев назад
Oliver had shims to put under the cover. You can still get them from Agco, but hold on to your hat! I've never had a clevis break, but I've worked on a couple that I could see it had broke and was welded back together.

As the guys mentioned down the page, the IH used similar parts from the Super M's up through the small frame IH's of laters years(686), they work ok, well depending on who you ask, but the only thing I am wondering about is on the IH's, it is pretty well known knowledge that if the seal is leaking the bull pinion bearing(s) needs looked at as it is often the reason the seal was taken out. Is that not the case on Oliver's?
@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris 9 месяцев назад
I have come across some loose bull pinions, but on the whole, a new seal is usually all it needs.
