Fair play to you for videoing this hassle you had rather than saying " you just have to undo the left hand screw and the chuck screws off" rather than edit the video to the end with the chuck off ans saying "peace of cake " while hiding all the messing around, this is one of those stubborn jobs that we all get in real life. Nice one and fair play

I had a similar problem with mine (the screw was not jammed though, but the thread of the chuck itself) and solved it that way: I removed the plastic cover of the chuck and disassembled the gearbox (I was a bit afraid of that but it is actually easier than one would think). After removing several layers of cogwheels, I saw the shaft. I fastened the now stripped chuck in a vice and used a socket spanner to loosen the shaft from the other side. It was tough, but ultimately worked. After that, I reassembled the gearbox and installed the new chuck.

Loved your perseverance and it makes me almost sane as I have the same issue with a Makita drill. Got the LH screw out but cannot get the chuck to budge]. Don’t have a nut splitter so used Dremel w/ cutting wheel and reduced the old chuck by bits. Your video now has me going back at that drill to get a ‘WIN’ -THANKS A WHOLE BUNCH!!

Put some cutting tool fluid and leave it and then put some heat around it and inside it so hopefully with the heat and penetrating boat won't expand and should come off

That's interesting, I hadn't thought of letting some cutting fluid soak in, good idea. I'm not sure about heat, the gearbox casings are normally nylon; i suppose fast direct heat might be OK.

My problem is that the chuck that won't loosen from the spindle. With my old drill I managed to get it off with an allen key and a hammer but I can't seem to do the same with my new drill. I tried hammering an allen key as well as manually applying force with extra leverage, but that just seems to rotate the chuck.

I spoke with a professional tool repairer today and he said that often it's just not possible to get the chuck off a cordless drill. He said it's because they can be so powerful that the chuck is effectively locked on and that if you try the 'hitting the alan key in the chuck method' you'd end up bending the spindle.

Pop a slightly pointed red hot rod down the chuck hole for ten seconds or so so you heat the left hand screw head as it's likely set in with a thermoplastic glue .

After careful consideration of the amount of time and effort required to remove my frozen chuck I have decided to forego the project and ordered a replacement Makita 1/2" hammer drill (renewed)l from Amazon. I shall revisit the frozen chuck later with my angle grinder's cutoff wheel when I'm refreshed and ready to take on a new day. If I succeed I shall have two drills and if I do not my junk box will welcome a new addition!

I have a Makita 8390D which uses the same gearbox as the 453. I watched your video on how to remove the chuck in low gear with a hammer and allen key but no joy In desperation I stripped down the gearbox to get to the back of the chuck and found the drive gear to be the same as a Torx 45 using the last gear plate and a Torx bit socket I put the allen key back in the chuck held it in a vice and unscrewed the chuck.
@ShedTV

To loosen the chuck retaining screw i chucked allen wrench in an smacked it counterclockwise , but not full power (that might have obliterated this zip code), just a couple low powered wacks. This evidently took most the tension off that screw, and then it was easy to unscrew it. Before that, it wouldn't budge. If you think about it it makes sense, the normal threaded chuck when struck counterclockwise should relive tension on retainer screw.
@ShedTV
@ShedTV 2 года назад
Ah, yes. I'd never thought of that, but it makes perfect sense.

I saw no signs of corrosion on any of the screwed components. In your opinion did the drill leave the factory with over tightened components to discourage repairs? Congrats BTW!
@ShedTV
@ShedTV 3 года назад
Thanks. I don't think that's the case, usually it takes a good hard initial twist to break free the Locktite and out they come. I have struggled with a few in the past, but this is the only one so far which has put up this sort of a fight. My guess is that someone had tried to extract the screw, not realising it was a left-hand thread and jammed it solid. Shame about my Kennedy pound-through screwdriver, they're decent quality, but obviously not tough enough for the 140-kilo gorilla!

I found this real life video so refreshing. I had the same problem of a broken Makita chuck, watched several instructional videos on how to remove it and how easy it is, all of which ignore the real life situation where the job comes to a stop with the LHT retaining screw refusing to come loose. I notice you removed the circlip - I saw the circlip and wondered, fortunately at this stage I watched your video. Now I know for sure in the short term at least I will have to buy a new drill and best of all I don’t need to feel a failure because I’m buying a new drill because of a broken chuck. Thanks, great video !

You know it a bad one when every tool is out and in your way on the bench. Nice job on the struggle. Suggest a pipe wrench with maybe a cheater pipe to remove the bit you cut off instead of the vice grips.
@ShedTV
@ShedTV 3 года назад
Thanks. It's not really about leverage, you can still push the motor round it you apply enough pressure. It's about shocking the thread free and to do that you need to have a tight hold on the chuck, hence the allen key, or in this case the mole grips. Not that it worked...

How do you get the metal chuck off, something inside the chuck is bust so it turns but the 3 teeth do not move so no joy with Allen key.
@ShedTV
@ShedTV Год назад
To be honest, with a metal chuck with broken jaws it is going to be a struggle. If theres any part, a collar for example, of the chuck which dosen't spin freely, you might get that in the vice and try to unscrew it using the motor, or perhaps get some locking grips on it and hit them. Failing that I have seen someone cut through the chuck with a slitting disc in a grinder. Not easy though.

Cheers Bill. I only use them at home, we've pretty much moved away from personal tools at work these days. I started off repairing and refurbishing what I already had and had been given, and I found that it is actually quite satisfying to bring an otherwise scrap tool back to working order. I also enjoy the process of making the videos and the interaction with people on RU-vid. I might start selling some, but only because I've got so many now, there only a couple of beers worth of profit in each tool; so it's not worth doing solely for that reason.

i love your nut splitter idea. i need to get one. the chuck screw might be reverse thread, but as with a normal stuck thread, try doing it up. it may help. i wouldnt try starting to unscrew these screws with a screwdriver. i'd start with an impact driver. no, not a cordless tool known by that name but the thing with the exchangeable bits that you hit the end of it with a hammer. if that buggers the screw head then i drill it out. i recently had to remove a broken chuck. i got the screw out but no further. instead of doing the sensible thing and letting the makita repair shop dismantle it to put the special gearbox locker on it, i got the grinder and measuring tools out and carefully ground the entire remnants away. i may have damaged a gearbox by using the hex key in the chuck method on one drill that i dismantled. i may get a repair shop to swap chucks next time before i reach for a bigger hammer.
