Broken CV Axle Shaft WELD IT .... DID IT HOLD UP?

The welder saved the day again and my Yamaha UTV gave me hours of hard work... I mean play.
TOOLS I used in the video:
OXY Acetylene retractable Reel 50' : amzn.to/3jNN3fu
No 3 Aviation Gasket Sealant AMAZING stuff : amzn.to/3VxScFu
No 2 Gasket Sealant(same as no3 just thicker) : amzn.to/3VFc3mn
Universal CV RUBBER BOOT kit : amzn.to/3vxB2NO
After Thoughts about the Video: Well DANG! I tried to be nice at first. Then I got rougher and rougher. Then I just went full bore for nearly 5 hours and it's still holding! I did not expect it to grip, launch, jolt, skid and stay in one piece; but it did. I did 33 donuts and Ginger was grinning ear to ear.

If you carried the new axle with you, the welded one will probably never break, if you left the new axle home, the welded one would break. Good Job Moe.

@The story channel, your comment is so true. Some time ago the cable snapped on the sliding door off my work van. I immediately reordered a new one, with a week’s waiting before I had it in my hand . I could see that this was going to be a right pain in the ass, climbing in and out from the back. After some splicing, and some super glue, I managed to get a temporary fix in place. I recently changed the van , sending the old van on its journey, with the new cable safely in the glove box.👍

That's a part of Murphy's Law folks seldom remember... the part that breaks is guaranteed to be the one for which there is no spare. The part that does NOT break always has a backup ready to go! If I didn't already know that Murphy was deceased, I'd hunt him down and put his head on a pike. Best wishes! 🤔🤦🏻‍♂️😡 - Max Giganteum

People can get so tied up with doing things by the book that sometimes repairs take for ever to complete. An old mechanical fitter said to me years ago when we needed to get some equipment up and running asap, 'there's exceptional and acceptable and right now this job only needs to be acceptable'. Cool fix. Also, who doesn't love a dog getting excited in the snow! Make sure you capture as many of those moments a you can.

Yeah, my Dad mentioned that something along the same lines albeit not usually as he'd not "millright" style designs. He'd almost always machine and bolt or screw things together... though he'd weld stuff and just not talk about so much... if ever. I guess was an industrial master mechanic thing. Anyways, I'm totally amazed being pickier about welding from family union pipe fitter influence where you can get things as good as new and one had noted reminded him of the "Germans" who prefer to not weld and thread everything they at least can. Though yeah, cheap welders that are even FCAW machines amaze me at what they can do. Technically, as a chemist from what I understand with maybe "aluminum" as the best know example... you just heat treat after welding to basically get the "aircraft aluminum" quality and like TIG welding... just use homebrew material as filler from the material your welding.

Just about everything is made to throw away & replace. When I was around 16 (many years ago) I was discussing mechanic work with guy from Italy who I was working with. He said, "mechanics? you do not have mechanics in the US, just part changers". That started a heated exchange, but he ended by saying here in the us for example we just change an alternator (still a few generators in some equipment back then). I said yeah? well in Italy we rebuild them. That was so many years back. That did not change. but for shops with labor cost etc. just replacing seem like the only way it is done. Great repair, got you up & running. Keep us up to date on this repair. Like you I try to salvage whatever I can. 👍 # 21 Stay safe, Joe Z

Between being semi-retired, ordering what I do need online and already having a lot of stuff... it's actually no surprise to me I've yet to spot it. If I have? For a low power, low RPM application... the odds of a repair lasting a long time over many hours are very good. The higher the HP and higher the RPMs go, the less the odds are of long term durability. IMHO, what it all boils down to is the type of steel the original part is made of along with the heat treatment applied plus what filler metal is used and if any heat treating is attempted after the welding is completed. As long as the shaft runs true... of course. Obviously, an ATV versus an actual automobile makes a big difference in potential lifespan so the expectations for the ATV run higher. Best wishes! 👍🏻👨🏻‍🔧🇺🇸 - Max Giganteum

I make CV joint prototypes for many different companies and your explanation was on point. The only thing I would add is never buy a remanufactured joint because they grind the heat-treated surface off the inner + outer race and they fail extremely fast. Love your videos!
@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford Год назад
That's some great info. So they regrind the races and use larger ball bearings?
@jasondk5127
@jasondk5127 Год назад
@@sixtyfiveford Yes, they only last so long. The races are induction hardened only .03-.04 deep before finish grind. After their ground the surface hardness is about 55Rc only .02 deep gradually gets softer towards the center.
@MaxGiganteum
@MaxGiganteum Год назад
So in other words... the fully hardened layer is probably only about .003-.004 but might not be fully hardened at all depending on who does the work. Regular wear over time can eat up .020 which means a poorly rebuilt joint will fail pretty fast... sadly so. Lends credence to the phrase "You get what you pay for!". Just to clear up something from a previous video (someone may have already, don't know). You were wondering why a "funny looking u" is used in the abbreviation for microfarad. The symbol is the Greek letter mu, equivalent to our "m". Why they didn't use an m is because that is reserved for milli, meaning 1/1000. Mu is for micro, meaning 1/1,000,000.

I would've been inclined to reinstall the bearings prior to welding the shaft and just protected them from the splatter with slotted temporary metal plates. Plus the shaft could've been tapped to accept a bolt to hold the pieces in perfect alignment and perhaps add some additional strength through the core.
@MaxGiganteum
@MaxGiganteum Год назад
Two things: 1. A water soaked blob of balled up newspaper = some of the best weld spatter protectant EVER. Free & easily disposed of. For the Uber greenies, 100% biodegradable and non-toxic too. 2. I was thinking the same thing by using threaded shaft from something such as a bolt with the head cut off... for use in the repair of the broken shaft. There are considerations however when attempting this kind of repair. Overall length might be a factor. If the shaft was hardened (and apparently it was!), it would have to be annealed before commencing repairs. You would also have to have access to the machine tools to accomplish this type of repair... along with the tooling. Lastly, such a repair would have to actually be possible... and I'm not sure it would be in this case. I cannot make up my mind because I didn't get a good enough look at the parts to decide. Nevertheless, it's a great idea and I would have looked into it if I were in Moe's shoes. IMHO, such a repair is considered a permanent one if done correctly... and is one I've done myself a quite number of times over the last few decades of my career. Including re-hardening the shaft. Success? Every single attempt resulted in success. I'll admit though that it helps greatly to have expert welders and certain equipment at your disposal such as 100% accurate heat treat ovens. Yeah, I've been spoiled in parts of my past. Best wishes! 👍🏻👨🏻‍🏭🇺🇸 - Max Giganteum

friend broke his axle in big riding lawn mower, everyone said couldnt weld it, well i did, i used 11018 rod, and with lots of preheat, i also V cut it several times, to make weld solid to middle of the axle, how did it hold up? he used mower around farm nearly everyday, for light tractor work, and mowed with it for 2 years about every week, 18 acres, it held for 2 years, and he traded it in on a new rider, never had isse with it, and when axle broke a new axle was crazy expensive, he just wanted to get through mowing season, even if i had to weld it again, i could not build it up like you did, as it was welded where wheel attached, so had to leave weld same height as axle, thats why i upped rod strength, instead of 7018. i went to 11018,

Are the splines right on the new longer shaft?. Why not shorten it from The Middle mitering each mating in so you can get a full penetration weld with 7018? If you have to, you can put a sleeve on before you weld the ends together, then grind them flush with the shaft and then slide the sleeve over the Weld and welded sleeve on. Or just use half of the new shaft and the good half of the old one so you don't have to do all that other work. Just a suggestion. Thanks for posting another great video. I don't know where you find the time to do the work, record it, post-production Etc, or the patients to put up with dick heads like me in the comment section LOL you're a man of many parts and they're all good parts. I really liked the part was when you took apart the inner joint. I take everything apart too.

What year Rhino? I had a 96 Artic Cat ATV and on the front axle the outer thread part broke off that holds hub on, I tried welding it with 70s, twice, and it still broke off, the problem was the outer threaded part cant be built up with weld like you did.......

Only temporary if doesn't work? I've fixed a few solid shafts by sliding a sleeve on, then weld shaft, grind, slide sleeve over welded area and weld sleeve ends. I've found 3 point hitch bushings make great sleeves.

Sleeving would be ideal

Er90 wire and good preheat would probably have it close to original strength

Do you remember what settings you used on the welder?
@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford Год назад
Hot! I run really thin wire in my welder (.025) so my settings are going to vary widely compared to most. I ran 19.7 volts at 600 wire speed.

Bevel or groove the shaft for the weld to penetrate the core, if in case broke again😅😅😅
@sixtyfiveford

I groove enough spots for full center weld penetration.

Be gentle because that shaft is not solid, just a bandaid, probably just get you far enough out in the boonies to make the repair more difficult.

Would it be possible to cut a section from that replacement if your original had been beyond repair?
