Broken Down In The Middle Of Nowhere?

Everything was fine until it wasn't!! We broke a leaf spring on our trailer's axle that left us unable to move until we figured out a way to get back to civilization. What do you do if your own camp trailer, motorhome or other RV breaks down with no help available? What are your options?

Getting out on the road is what Linda and I love to do with our converted cargo trailer camper. We're part time nomads and the nomadic lifestyle suits us to a Tee. Whether your RV is a camper van, camp trailer, travel trailer, motorhome or just a car and a tent, there's going to be something interesting for you in the videos we produce. Back roads and overlanding are part of what we do while exploring the western states for beautiful, peaceful and sometimes remote places to camp on BLM and National Forest land (public land). Taking care of ourselves as much as possible and doing our own repairs is a must because we travel on a fixed income and a limited budget. If your into being off-grid and boondocking whenever possible then you'll appreciate the discussions on batteries, solar panels and solar chargers or power stations. Come on along, we're happy to have your company!

Good job at the jury rigging. That reminded me having two flats within a mile of each other about 70 miles south of Gallop NM on a Friday, before a three day weekend. The tire place in Gallop was closed until Tuesday and had to order the tires, which took another day. We were there for days on an Indian reservation in the desert, but we had the only trees we could see anywhere for shade and a windmill fed water tank. The good out weighed the bad being there, we were surrounded by hundreds of sheep one morning and the hikes we took everyday were beautiful. I'm glad it went smooth for you two, ya gotta love it.

Nice to see someone jump into action instead of sitting on the curb and crying about it. In those circumstances I get really irritated, I've been a professional mechanic for 42 years and have $250K in tools...... at the shop. I generally don't even carry a screwdriver or a pair of pliers. I'm in the process of setting up a camper shell on my truck with all my camping gear, I'm going to build a lockable box inside to be able to lock my 2 road service boxes up so I don't find myself completely tool-less.

That's the best thing I've watched in i don't know how long !!!!! But when you 2 prayed I knew it was going to be okay ☺️ I know it's after the fact... but my advice would be a roll of bailing wire, good duct tape and let a little air out of the tires when you're on dirt roads whether the axles good or broken, it helps absorb some of the shock. Great fix/ ingenuity !!! It's what our forefathers would have done 😂😊🧐

Something you could do yourself is to replace both springs with much longer ones. With a longer, wider and thicker spring it will ride nicer and have more travel. If you do this mod you could add bump stops and shocks if you need them. If you look at places like Jags and Summit racing they will sell spring pockets for the front and shackles made for race cars just for relocating the springs for wider tires. Even if the the springs are thicker and wider if they are 15" longer they wont be as stiff as yours now. It's just an idea.

Just got back from deer hunting and saw this video. I had a good laugh. I did exactly the same thing 35 years ago with a trailer made out of an old pickup box. My grandfather had decided to split up a 60' black walnut tree for firewood. I decided I needed some for woodworking projects and piled the box high with black walnut. 150 miles into our 700-mile journey home the spring broke on the trailer. I didn't go all the work you did. I jacked it up, slapped a piece of firewood on top of the spring like a splint, wrapped chain around both ends of the wood, and tied the chain into a knot. Then wrapped some rope around it for good measure. Sixty mph all the way home.

Yeah people like us pride ourselves on the ability to overcome most disasters. That was a very good fix. I broke a Axel shaft off so we found a tree limb that we were able to wedge in the leafspring tie it in with straps and use it like a ski!! To get me to civilization to make a repair. You did a great job. Memories that’s what life is about.

Love the chunk of wood for a block. Have done similar, as i used to run a business with lots of trailers that farmers pulled in fields with washouts and through ditches to get there. Necessity: Mother of invention.

The problem is the front of the spring broke. Jack the trailer up to relive the pressure. Undo the total spring and reverse it. This will make it where the spring will drag the axel instead of trying to push it. Then do the wood under the axel bit to keep the tires from rubbing. Hopefully the strap pulling will work.

Clamps, the U shaped ones with the nuts on each side are always great to throw in a tool box. a quick solder kit comes in a tube but sets up really hard. And you can find these in an auto supply store. ....You did great! and your wife is a true blessing for remembering the wire fence where you picked up the wire, that's a life partner. Thanks for sharing the adventure.

Great job on thinking your way out of a predicament. Excellent MacGyver skills. We have had many situations like you experienced. Good practice for critical thinking ... something a lot of folks are short on. We've experienced everything from four new (but, faulty) RV tires blow in the middle of nowhere to the wind peeling the roof off our RV. All requiring some out-of-the-box thinking and response. We once found ourselves fifty miles from nowhere at night in a driving rainstorm. We were driving a 1948 Willys Jeep. The driver side motor-driven windshield wiper cotter pin broke leaving us unable to see and drive. The pin on the other wiper was too far gone to attempt to remove and reuse. So, what did we do? Actually, my husband said a bunch of bad words and threw his hands up. I was the one who came up with the MacGyver fix. We'd spent the day fishing and THAT was what saved our butts. I suggested we use a #10 snelled fishing hook to fasten the wiper blade to the motor ... the hook wasn't a cotter key but it worked. When I say worked ... we had to replace the fishing hook four times before we got home. Happy Trails. And, I am a firm believer in insurance. Insurance came through and then some when the RV roof blew off. Paid for the repairs PLUS rental of a Uhaul to carry our belongings 700 miles home, paid for two nights lodging for four people (two rooms), meals, gas and the trip back to pick up and bring home the RV after it was repaired. $500 deductible.
