Broken Headstock Repair!
In this video we repair a broken headstock on an Epiphone acoustic guitar.
Can we put Humpty-Dumpty back together again? Watch as we go from a totally busted up mess to an invisible repair.
In this video I reglue the headstock back in place, reinforce with splines and refinish to a beautiful, like new shine.
On a personal note: Sorry it's been so long since the last video until this one. I had a major computer crash and almost lost everything that wasn't already backed up. This included several videos (many hours) worth of footage that I had not backed up. I had to spend quite some time trying to salvage what I had and recreating what I lost. For instance, I lost my entire opening title sequence. I lost the first whole segment of Camera 1 in this video. I tried to take a lighthearted approach at explaining it away in the video, but this actually caused me a lot of trouble. I appreciate your understanding and thank you so much for your support.

Of the broken-headstock videos I’ve watched over a couple of years now - it’s been a few - this one’s a top-five, I believe. Thanks for the generous presentation.

Excellent. A lot of work. How is the skill, time and materials used weighed against the actual value of the repaired instrument as opposed to a new one? A long winded way of asking "Is it worth it?"

Do you believe it will work without the splits, only with glue? I got exactly the same break on my guitar neck. And also, if it's possible, can you tell me how much you would charge in the US for that kind of work. Tk you.

Nice job. On your splines, I was taught you should always try to have the grain perpendicular to the neck. (Of course couldn't see that well.) Still the job is really nice. I've heard people over the years, complain about Gibson's headstock angle, that they should change it, etc., etc.,because of the high number of breaks. Of course they've provided thousands of luthiers & repair people, with a stream of steady income, so maybe they shouldn't change after all. (I've actually heard of them breaking sitting on stands, or in the case. LoL. They must be doing something right, as a lot people love Gibson guitars. Very nice job.

Yep, it's the age old problem... Everyone complains about the design, but as soon as they change it everyone is upset because it's "not like the old way." LOL oh well, what can you do? I guess just keep fixing them, and that's fine with me :D Thanks for watching!

Would that nt makes for an extremely weak spline? Like REALLY weak?
@rakentrail
@rakentrail 2 года назад
If I was out in your neck of the woods I'd try and source some hedge apple (osage orange) for splines. I get it when there's a translucent finish mahogany hides better but opaque or really dark finishes stronger woods like maple, hickory or osage orange can really toughen up the joint! I have hickory growing here where I am so I use it a lot for splines. BTW, the Epiphones are worse than the Gibsons for breaking! IMHO the headstocks are just too long on the Epi's!

@randybrooks7964

Why do they do the darker patch? Is it just a "full disclosure" sort of thing?
@MazzoccoGuitars
@MazzoccoGuitars 3 года назад
Good question Randy. You're talking about the darker shade of finish where the repair is, right? This is because the glue line from this break will never go away and will always be visible under a clear/light finish. The splines that I put in also will show making the whole thing look ugly. Also, this guitar, like many, already has a tinted finish and it is nearly impossible to blend the two colors together as where they two overlap it will continue to get darker making the it even more obvious. There are probably about 12 people in the world that are good enough at blending finish to make this seamless transition. Unfortunately I'm not one of them. So the best solution is to just go darker where the break was, make it look like it was done on purpose and unless someone knows, they'll never know. :D

What stain are you using, and what kind of airbrush? I've got a similar issue, but it didn't completely come off - the ebony plate in front held it together. I need to get around to finishing it.
@MazzoccoGuitars
@MazzoccoGuitars 3 года назад
Hello Joseph and thanks for watching. I use color tints from Stewmac. The black matches this really nice, but for more of a fade look I'll often use tobacco brown. the airbrush is just a cheap harbor freight air brush. but it does the job.

Just out of curiosity, what would a repair like this cost? My friend has an Epiphone electric with the same issue.
@MazzoccoGuitars
@MazzoccoGuitars 3 года назад
Don't quote me on this because prices vary from place to place and from luthier to luthier, but I would expect this kind of repair to cost anywhere from $200 to $500 US, depending on the severity of the break, degree of difficulty in putting the pieces back together and any the extent refinishing/touchups needed.

That customer must have loved that Epi. I think you put much more time effort and finesse into the repair than Epiphone puts into 10 guitars. Beautiful work, brother.

what kind of paint poly or laquer?
@MazzoccoGuitars
@MazzoccoGuitars 3 года назад
I spray shellac first because it plays well with almost all finishes. So no matter what is on there, I can usually spray my lacquer over it that way.

Surely that repair cost more than the guitar is worth?...
@MazzoccoGuitars
@MazzoccoGuitars 3 года назад
You're not wrong. but there are different ways to valuate a guitar. 1) how much would it sell for on Reverb, 2)how much is it worth to the owner who says it's his favorite guitar and doesn't want to play anything else. In this case it was the latter and he chose to pay.

headstocks don't fall off.....it's caused by morons who lean their guitars on the amps or against the wall or in a stand while plugged in, drinking...I've never had it happen to me. I have fixed a few for people.
