Residential refrigerators aren't made to fit through RV doors so you only have two options - take out a window or take out the windshield. Luckily this Newmar Dutch Star has a window big enough for the fridge to just barely fit through…

Wow! Great job. Love how you started in daylight and finished in when it got dark. Also love the Buc-ees t-shirt 😀

My biggest fear is having to replace our fridge in our RV. Ours would have to go through the windshield🥲. Thankfully our go-to repair facility, Lazy Days told us that they would be able to do the job when the time comes. Congrats on the new RV!👍🏻 As always, safe travels!🙏

Yeah, that's not a small job at all. It was great that they had a window big enough in their RV so we could help them with it.

The problem I found with residential refrigerators in RVs is a lack of proper ventilation, that is aside from not being designed for travel and seasonal use. Thankfully mine has five inches of dead space under it which was covered with drawer fronts. This allowed me to add ventilation to the "shelf" it sits on in the slide. A decorative louvered vent was added to the side of the cabinet as well since there was a minimal gap at the top. To finish I added thermostat controlled 12v fans to push air from under the refrigerator and up the back to aid the compressor. This has reduced running time and the refrigerator freezing in the summer. More importantly the air flow has reduced dust buildup on the coils. Dust build up is a common issue leading to failure of many components. If the coils are not cleaned everything works harder, longer, and hotter trying to maintain the selected temperatures. Due to refrigerators in slides being slightly elevated it is difficult to pull them out for annual cleaning. I use two 6x6 blocks to roll my refrigerator out. Most can use 4x4 and a sheet of ply to create a platform for the refrigerator to roll out on. Remember most RVs do not have any form of air filtration or humidity control like our homes do. Therefore dust builds up much quicker on coils. Add to this reduced ventilation and air flow and you have the perfect conditions for higher energy consumption, louder and longer running cycles, and eventual failure of components. Cleaning is vital. Hope this helps other avoid having to prematurely replace their refrigerator. Obviously I'm not saying there are not other reasons for failure. The fact is appliances are no longer designed for decades of trouble free operation. Proper maintenance and ventilation will help extend the life of a good quality refrigerator. Cheers.

take off the brackets next time! nothing worse than equipment barley fitting by a c hair!!! drives me crazy!!!! I install air handlers through attic holes and every 1/8 inch matters big time!!! glad you succeeded, great job!!!!

We stripped off every bracket we could. The one that got stuck that required the little pry bar wasn't removable unfortunately. Luckily there was enough give in the panel on the back that we could force it through.

That’s an ordeal I hope my Horizon doesn’t need a fridge replacement. The windows are too small. It’s gotta be the windshield
@davidew98
@davidew98 Год назад
Actually they don't remove the windows to replace the fridge. they remove the slide at rv dealers to replace fridges
@Five2Go
@Five2Go Год назад
It probably depends on the dealership, the RV, etc. It's way easier to remove a window than a slide.

hopefully you let that sit SEVERAL hours before turning it on! if not you lowered the life of the compressor!
@Five2Go
@Five2Go Год назад
They let it sit until the next morning, so about 12-15 hours.

What is the old and new refrig sizes? Just curious ...

They are exactly the same, I made sure of it. The new fridge is the same model as the old one except it has no ice maker in the door, just one in the freezer.

They say if you lay over a fridge it ruins the compressor
@Five2Go
@Five2Go Год назад
If you lay it down and then plug it in too soon you can damage the compressor because the coolant isn't in the right place. They didn't plug it in for about 12 hours which was plenty of time for the coolant to go back to where it belongs - we talked about that towards the end.
@bobblack3870
@bobblack3870 Год назад
Trent: you are correct - in some cases. To be entirely safe, look at the compressor from the rear. It is normally a black round-ish unit. It has 2 lines coming out. If you need to lay the refrigerator down, make sure those lines are pointing up. This keeps the oil in the compressor. When it is standing upright again, wait at least half an hour to allow oil that may have gotten into the lines to drain back into the compressor.

All of that for a bad PCB. Gotta love modern technology.
@Five2Go
@Five2Go Год назад
They had been struggling with it since last year and had it "fixed" twice. It got to the point where it was just cheaper to just throw in the towel and replace it.
@mstrickk1
@mstrickk1 Год назад
Yeah that's ridiculous. Seen lots of issues with all this new fancy crap over the years. That's why I bought an old school dumb fridge, stove, washer and drier, and will never buy the fancy stuff if I can help it.
