Broken Taillight Fix

The Mercedes had a broken taillight and so far I have not been able to find one at a junkyard. I'm going to try mixing food coloring with clear epoxy to patch the hole. The results turned out well. I used too much food coloring so it turned out more red than orange so if you plan to do this add just the tiniest amount of food coloring.

I recently tried this and used some red die as well.... while testing on surface. I used jb clearweld and worked great after polishing and buffing.... was great thank you!!!

The golden rule when tinting any substance is do a test mix first and let it dry. Then you can determine if it is too much coloring or too little and adjust.

When using the JB, pull the plunger back slightly before putting the cap back on. I also mark the lock tabs on the cap before use so I can put it back on exactly. You cross-contaminated the applicator end by putting it on wrong first then changing it. You will have a glob of dried epoxy next time you go to use it. Also, I use JB Weld Plastic Structural Epoxy for strength.

That's a great fix.... had it been the red part broken it would be a perfect match. Wonder if you mix epoxy with an orange marking pen you may be able to stop the color where you need it?

that may would work, next time i think i will put the drop of food coloring somewhere else and use a toothpick to dip in the food coloring then dip in the epoxy, that way it would just add a tiny amount of food coloring.

Use a red magic marker to fill in the color variation.

Instead of adding more clear epoxy, you could have put some yellow die in that. But, unless you really care about the appearance, not a big deal. Thanks for sharing your experience.

I didn’t have any yellow, if I did it over again I’d just get more epoxy and mix it up again with less coloring.
