Wednesday 15th May 2024:
Its just over a year since I bought my Brompton folding bike and I filmed a review of it after riding the first 100 miles.
It’s a C-Line, 6-speed, Explore model, finished in one of 2023’s limited colours - ‘Bumblebee Yellow’. That video has been quite popular, with 29,000 views, and these fabulous bikes seem to have a worldwide audience - so I thought I’d bring things up to date a bit and say how I feel about the bike after using it for a year.
I went to the canal at Brecon to make today's video and rode along the towpath a few miles. Along the way, I encountered a convoy of American tourists who had hired narrowboats and who were all members of the same family! That was very special, and I'll make a separate video of it, for you to see soon.
Hope you enjoy this Brompton-review!
Cheers,
Jeff
By the way, if you do enjoy the video, then please consider subscribing - it really helps me to grow the channel!

I have owned a brompton for almost 7 years. It's still durable and looks beautiful. There haven't been many issues, just changing tires and a titanium seatpost. In my opinion, Brompton is very worth it.

@zulkhairizulkhairi201 - Many thanks for the comment! Very good to hear the bike is going so well after 7 years. They certainly feel as if they are built to last a long time! 👍

My Brompton is the healthiest gym workout. I got mine in 2019 and it’s my favorite bike of all time. It’s great for everything. I just replaced tires and chain . I add extra lights too

Nice bike, very useful when you have a bag or basket fixed on for shopping trips etc on the canal. I had two neat Cateye headlamps & a Cateye rear light for my last bike. Two different shaped headlamps meant being able to angle them separately for maximum clear sight in front of you, rechargeable batteries, loved it altogether.

Thanks Annie! Yes, I really have to sort out a bag - the Brompton branded ones look great, although a bit pricey. I like Cateye too, and have a front one which is super bright, although I haven't used it on the Brompton yet. It recharges via usb. I can see the advantage of two lamps, thats a great idea 👍

Thanks very much - glad you agree! Its my favourite Brompton colour 👍Yes, you're right, I didn't mention any lighting... I do use a Cateye on the back, (more useful on road than canal), but will think about more lights when I draw up my shopping list of bits to get.

Hi Jeff, thanks for the ride on your Brompton and all the lovely scenery while riding along the towpath, good weather on your side and your right about the Colour Bumblebee yellow great shade of yellow. The nicest shade of yellow in my opinion is Sunshine yellow, when I use to tend private Gardens one Customer requested I painted her front door when the gardening season ended to which I did and the shade of yellow in the best I've ever seen, mind you your Brompton wants some beating and is a Great 2nd.😊 As always take care and stay safe out there. 😊 John.

@Gladysthenarrowboat Месяц назад
Hey, thanks John! Sunshine yellow sounds good. Bumblebee is an unusual shade and just leaps out - definitely my favourite for a Brompton. Next week, you'll see more footage from that day of the canal itself - I was lucky to meet the American families on their boats but also a number of other narrowboats and almost unbelievably, a family of swans which seemed happy to come very close to me - so cute 😁

Hello Jeff, thank you for the video. I’m a new owner, bought mine in February 2024. I added Rock Brothers kickstand, from Amazon and have found that very solid & useful, still don’t understand why it would not be standard on a Brompton. I live in a fairly hilly area and the six speed C-line gearing inadequate for my hills. Like you I find Brilliant Bikes videos very helpful and found their video on installing a 39 tooth chainring very straightforward and also found Wheels on Bike chainring installation very helpful. Looking forward to your future videos, just subscribed. Cheers from West Linn, Oregon.
@Gladysthenarrowboat
@Gladysthenarrowboat Месяц назад
Hi Gus and thanks very much for the comment! Yes I agree with you - Brompton could easily fit a kick stand as standard, and as I've said on my videos, the choice of a 50 tooth chainwheel is bonkers - it might be ok for someone who only ever rides around a city but many of us don't - so a 44 or 39 tooth is a necessity. Glad you like Brilliant Bikes - I think Hannah's videos are very well done - and she's entertaining too! If I lived closer to them, I'd definitely go in their shop to say hello. But meanwhile, if I need anything, they are my online shop of choice. Well done for subscribing too Gus! I am very grateful, and hope you'll enjoy the Brompton-adventures I'll have once I get Gladys the Narrowboat finally out onto the canals! (Not long now... fingers crossed! 🤞)

A nice happy colour bike 😊 I think when it comes to choosing a colour for accessories like a new saddle, obviously go for the colour you want, but what I like to do is follow the original design essence of the bike, so yours, much like mine is yellow with black additions, so following with black will keep the bike looking smart and new. But at the same time this does mean you miss out on the feeling of personalisation you’ll get from going with a different colour. Hope you find what you want 🚴🏻‍♀️
@Gladysthenarrowboat
@Gladysthenarrowboat Месяц назад
Hi MT and thanks as always for the constructive comment! Yes, the bike is essentially black and yellow, which go very well together. I've seen the blue, the green and the orange/brown C17 saddles on bikes (always on Bromptons, oddly enough), and they all look cool. They do come in other variants too I think - certainly a black one. I always used San Marco regal saddles on my road bikes, with copper rivets on the back - C17s also have rivets of some kind, but I dont think they're copper. Hmm... I will have to think long and hard before ordering one but yeah, a coloured one would personalise the bike a bit more. 👍

I've swapped my saddle for a Brompton super light saddle from Brilliant Bikes. It's pretty comfy and it has a carrying grip in the saddle horn. It's also 200g lighter than the c17. This kind of weight saving is noticeable when y' have to carry it across London every day. I've saved over a Kg a few hundred g's at a time and that's detectable. I like you swapped the seat post. I have a titanium one which is not only lighter but has significant flex which definitely adds to the comfort.
@Gladysthenarrowboat
@Gladysthenarrowboat Месяц назад
That's very helpful Steve - thanks very much! I just looked on BB's website and the superlight costs £70 which compares well with the Brooks and is 279g, apparently 100g lighter than the standard Brompton saddle - so I'll definitely consider it 👍 They also have a carbon version of it at £120 which weighs 205g - so, even lighter again! Saving a KG is impressive - I can appreciate how much difference that makes carrying it around all day. I have long fancied a titanium road frame as I know they are said to be more comfy - so am not surprised the Ti seat post makes a difference. Thanks once again! 👍
@theotherstevesteve
@theotherstevesteve Месяц назад
@@Gladysthenarrowboat I've also added a Swytch kit which added another Kg so to offset that I added a Ti fork and rear triangle. It was over a thousand pounds for the lot but the bikes 20 years old so about ready for the upgrades ;-)

Thanks Iain! Yes, very easy - you may need to loosen the brake levers and move them in a tiny bit like I had to, but it was an easy job. The version without bar ends (GP1) would fit the same way - a little cheaper maybe, but the palm grip is the same. So much more comfy than the original grips 👍

For me i have a yuzu lime brompton I love the colour and the bike after owning the bike for 6 months I should have got one with a front bag and back rack from day one I had to have the front inertube replaced under warranty so the put in an av4 tube and 6 months on I repmaced both tires and tubes as the rear tire was shredding by the rim so the marathon racers came of av4 tubes went in along with the continental contact urban I am much happyer with the bike the next one I buy in September I will have the rear rack and front bag other things I put on was frame protection bits for cables marking the frame and when the wheel folds I also got my tires tubes and breakpads at %50 of by going to sjs cycles so cheaper and an upgrade lol

Hi Steve. I have just looked up the yuzu lime colour and it looks great. Sounds like you had some bad luck with the tubes and tyres - I've been ok so far, but have heard that the Continentals are a good replacement tyre. I bought some frame protection helicopter tape for where the cables rub. 👍 50% discount at SJS sounds very handy - I'll have to remember that! Cheers!

Hi Jeff, I always like to see that stretch of canal. When I'm bike fit again I will have to jump on the train and make my way over to cycle along there myself. A good honest review there on the Brompton. You've highlighted just what a good bike it is and who knows, you may have tempted a few subscribers to buy one themselves. It's definitely serving you well and as you say, it will really come in handy when you are out and about with Gladys. I've finally built my bike now and I've only cycled around the local cycle tracks a few times at the moment to get used to cycling again. I'm hoping to get onto the canal sometime next week and really looking forward to it again. I also serviced my old mountain bike so either of my sons can come cycling with me if they want. I do like those Ergon GP2 grips and will definitely change mine for a pair of those. Not sure about my saddle yet, I'll give it a few more cycle rides before deciding whether to change it or not. Great video as always. Take care Jeff 👍

Hi Dave, thanks for the great comment - as always! Very glad to hear you have got the bike sorted and been out on it. Keep getting out and you'll soon have your cycling legs back again! Yes the Mon and Brec is lovely but I really like the canals you have around Birmingham / Worcestershire too. The stretch of canal on this video is actually near Brecon itself but the nearest station to it would be Abergavenny, which is about 20 miles away by road or canal. You'd need the hourly WMR train to Hereford, then a TFW train down to Abergavenny. A very nice train ride! The same canal does pass very close to Abergavenny though, at Llanfoist - a mile or so outside town, and cycling to Goytre Wharf (which I've featured before) would be ok from there if you didn't fancy riding all the way up to Brecon. Nice idea to service the mountain bike and yes, I do recommend the GP2s. As for saddles, I think you're right - give the supplied one a chance first - if anything, there are too many replacements to choose from these days! This coming Saturday's video is also footage from last Wednesday but will feature the canal itself rather than the Brompton - you'll get to see it looking really beautiful - and also some American boaters, a family of swans (cute) and lots more. Weather permitting, I will be taking a WMR train somewhere later this week - destination unknown for now! Cheers Dave 👍

Always liked Brooks saddles, with one caveat, that when they got wet they weren’t comfortable. Yes you could proof them with dubbin but that would stain clothes. I dare say you can spray NikWax them now. Do Ortlieb do a system suitable for the Brompton? Always liked their stuff.
@Gladysthenarrowboat
@Gladysthenarrowboat Месяц назад
Hi DC - thanks for commenting, as always! Yeah, when I was into time trialing / club cycling, I don't think we ever considered Brooks, because they were leather, didn't look cool, or racy, and, as you say, needed a lot of maintenance. I think the leather ones they do now, will still need treatment - the B17 for instance. But if I get a new saddle, it would be a C17 and I think they're made of rubber, supposedly maintenance-free. I don't know if Ortlieb makes any kit that attaches to the Brompton's front-block fitting, but its worth my looking into. The Brompton range of bags looks just the job, but then again, I expect I could get something in Halfords/Evans Cycles, that would be ok. I need to get my act together and start looking into it properly!

@Gladysthenarrowboat Месяц назад
Thanks Rob! I use a road bike if Im just going for a ride from home. But I often make videos along canals and I get there by car and trains. So the Brompton is perfect for that. And it'll fit easily inside my boat when that's finished. Its not a bad saddle that is supplied with the Brompton - so by no means an essential upgrade, although a lot of Brompton owners do seem to change them. I haven't decided yet.

@@Gladysthenarrowboat the b17 is a completely different story. This is full leather and once you got it broken in, it works really for your backside. I have a Brompton C line 6 speed and a Tern Verge P10 10 speed. The Tern has 21” inch tires versus 16” tires on the Brompton. The Tern is far more comfortable and faster than the Brompton. And it costs less. Brompton $2000 versus Tern $1650. The problem is I bought the Brompton first and now I don’t want it. The Brompton wins in folding smaller and easier to transport because of the smaller size. That’s the only benefit. Otherwise Tern Verge P10!

What's all the hype over Bromptons ?
@Gladysthenarrowboat
@Gladysthenarrowboat Месяц назад
Well, if you're looking for a bike which folds up very quickly, and you can easily carry - taking on a train, or in the boot of your car for instance, then a conventional bike / road bike / MTB can't compete. I have other bikes and started out on road bikes, so am relatively new to Bromptons - but my reason for buying one was that I'm in the process of having a narrowboat built and once its finished, I want a bike I can keep inside the boat - a conventional bike would be difficult getting in and out. Many people like Bromptons for commuting to work - in London say. Easy to get on the tube with one, and they can take it into the office with them / keep under their desk. Much more 'acceptable' to an office environment than a normal bike. I'd say they are certainly expensive - compared to a good quality road bike / MTB, but they have a very good reputation and are widely recognised as being good quality. Other makes are available of course!
