Brompton tour day 1- a problematic start

You have my utmost respect. Our cat would go mental if we tried to get her on a bike! LOL! Little Beans is unsettled (on heat too!) but she should soon get used to your routine on the road. You two make some great vlogging..... good luck and keep it coming. I hope it gets better for you so that you can really enjoy it and feel like it really is a holiday.

Enjoyed the video! Sometimes when pets get a little dehydrated u can give them a little food and water it down a lot. One time I hand fed my dog some canned organic green beans. They have water content and salt and she ate them. It was the one thing she was willing to eat and it worked.

Brian, your vlog made me laugh so much with the inevitability of Beans peeing in the tent! Anyway, I'd like to thank you for the Brompton inspiration; I'm now a year into ownership and it has made a massive difference to my working life. I travel all over the UK for work and wherever I go I take the opportunity to unfold the Brompton and cycle round the local area, seeing some amazing sites. You're doing great Brian, I do hope you can stay positive and not get too stressed by the challenges of travelling. This is absolutely not a criticism, because few of us would have planned things any better, but I think one of the things I've picked up from watching your experience is that before I go on a long tour, I'm going to do a short shakedown tour to try out all of my gear and setup. No matter how well you plan on paper, actually trying out a new setup for the first time on a practice run can show up what works well, what stuff you dont really need, and maybe other stuff that you need but haven't got yet. It might be that if you'd tried a short test tour that with Beans, you might have had second thoughts about doing a long tour with her. But who knows, maybe the bigger challenge of taking Beans will make it more of a memorable life experience for you. Sometimes the easy way of travelling isn't the most rewarding way for us as human beings. Good luck, and I hope you can finish the tour- the sense of accomplishment will be amazing for you.

Unfortunately it totally makes sence that Beans pissed inside the tent on your stuff. It's her way of showing you that she is mad at you. Cats know how to "talk" to humans. It happened to me too.

Cats usually despise new and unfamiliar environment. My cat don’t even like to board my other car for a vet visit. You need to give some time for cats to train or familiarise themself with new situations.

the next level will be that Beans will destroy the tent with the claws :( But respect for the first 100 Miles with that heavy bagage and cat🐱

It was a bad idea taking a cat, they are not dogs. If you pay close attention to the cat on the other channel you will see she really wanted the touring on a bike to stop and this is why the channel switched to a van - for a cat. Also, you work like the rest of us he doesn’t. I prefer your channel for this very reason.

I know you were not having a fun time with Beans at this point in your trip but it was really funny to watch. I think maybe cats are better at travelling when they have done it since they were kittens. My two previous cats that enjoyed car riding and bike rides started as kittens. The two I have now would be a disaster, my male stray is so shy he just hides in the corner of the travel bag or under the car seat. My female is like Oudini and can escape from any fabric bag and some plastic and metal ones too. Please watch Beans, my female cat works on the zips of these bags with her paws and then let's herself out. Is there somewhere you could attach a lead to the bag and perhaps have her wear a harness so that if she did break the zip she wouldn't escape? Glad you were able to check out Dean's channel, I think Nala is exceptional, not many cats would be so laid back.

Hope he’s ok. I check every day and no new vids. That camping by the highway is creepy and seems real dangerous.

Cats are creatures of habit. She’s an indoor / apartment cat used to a specific type of litter in a box in a particular place. She pissed on your gear because it’s the only thing that smells like home. I hope you consider picking up a tray and litter for her to use on the rest of your trip unless you want to bring home a cat that will continue to piss on your clothing and gear. Or consider having her transported back to your apartment while you’re gone where she can relax where she feels safe and comfortable.

The beauty of losing weight through cycling. Is you realize how much easier it is to move the bike. When I weighed 210lbs. Cycling was not as enjoyable as it is now I weigh 165lbs. And moving some bags weighing over 20lbs is even alot easier now.

Taking two spare Marathons is bordering on Doomsday Prepping 🤣 Beans should calm down a bit, although cat facts - the don't really stop being in heat as being jumped by Tom will make them instantly fertile again. Dean (1bike1world) found Nala abandoned/stray as a 8 week old kitten, so she's been on bikes almost from birth. Having Beans up front might calm her down a bit if you she can actually see your face - cats rely on facial expressions for reassurance.

Yeah - Beans is likely not used to peeing outside. I think Dean had an easier time with Nala because she was a stray kitten that ‘adopted’ him while he was travelling, so she’s much more used to the outside world than Beans is. He did have to jerry-rig his bike to accommodate her, and his setup evolved throughout, so yours can, too. It’s all a learning curve for her, and she’s out of her normal territory, so I imagine there’s a bit of territorial insecurity in there, as well. I’m not a cat trainer, and I don’t have a cat - but perhaps positive reinforcement training might help? If you see her pee outside, praise her and give her a treat; hopefully, in time, she’ll begin to associate peeing outside with something good, and become more comfortable with it. Good to see that you’re on the road, though! Hopefully things will start to go more smoothly for you and for Beans. 🚲😻✌️

Cat's pee to mark their territory because they are territorial animals, especially when they are in heat. It's just in her DNA. I'm sure she's not trying to upset you. My personal belief that cats and their care takers are happier when they are fixed. Good luck with tour.

You have to reinforce loving security to Beans. She's a domesticated cat, not a TomCat. I hope you don't send her into shock and you will without reinforcement of love and security. Cats will not pee anywhere, a little cat litter sprinkled on the ground in a hole with your encouragement will ease her to do her thing, but you didn't know. You complain TOO much, suck it up and get going and don't blame Beans for your decisions. Instead, this whole situation should be a challenge and met with equal problem solving, survival, and hard enthusiasm which I thought you had. I was elated about your trip and then the bitching started--yeah, life have some sucky moments--but I don't need to see it everywhere--there are other channels for that. I was expecting enjoyment with expressed difficulties--not bitching. I like you to enjoy all your experiences with Beans lovingly and supportively. I expect you to figure things out, problem solve all your difficulties, teach and show us how you master the rough spots for both you and Beans. You are smart and capable that's why I follow your channel--if I seek less or want less, I wouldn't be here. I feel as miserable as Beans. Fix it.
