We recently had three hens broody at the same time, but each hen had a unique experience. We navigate through hens incubating and hatching their own eggs, taking in young chicks, and breaking the broody habit.
Thank you SOOO much for sharing this! Who needs therapy!? Just some of your videos and I'm good!! Lol! Absolutely LOVED this!!! We brought in a handful of Araucana chicks - who laid beautiful sage green eggs - with the same sneak-the-chicks under a hen whose been brooding long enough. We had plastic eggs under her till it was time. The kind people put candy or whatever in for the kiddies to find on Easter. I think we put a small rock in each to make it more realistic weight wise. It worked for all but one chick who was a little bit older and as a Buff Rock she was also bigger. I ended up having to raise her myself. Lol. She followed me everywhere! I learned from the mama how to teach her what to eat etc. I let my little niece name her and as a tiny chick she looked just like Tweety Bird, the cartoon character... thus the name Tweety Bird. When she grew to full size, she was the biggest chicken I've ever seen! The name became VERY funny to everyone! She came when I called her, like a dog does and would lay in my arms like a cat. If I gently massaged her neck you would think she was purring. Often, between the "awww how sweet" comments I would say, "aww, she's purring!" Eceryone automatically laid their hand on her to try to feel her purr. Lolol! I'd say, "CHICKENS CAN'T PURR SILLY!" Oh the uproarious laughter that would break out! Of course others who fell for it before egged me on to do it to the next person. All in good fun of course! In Los Angeles, of course, few people there had ever been around live chicken, let alone one so people- freindly! Some of the best years of my life! We had two Easter Eggers share a nest and a couple silkie mixed do the same and a silkie and her daughter shared a nest and serama mum and her daughter share a nest Mums becoming broody with only one hen chick left will teach them how to become broody especially silke or serama because the broody hasn't been bred out of them Stealing eggs gotta love It lol silly hens
We have a hen who tries to steal the nest. She waits till mom gets up to eat and then sits down, sometimes laying an egg while she's there. But she only wants to sit on the eggs for a few hours at a time before abandoning them for the rest of the day. So we had to move the eggs once to the new nest where mom was forced to relocate, because she thought the nest now belonged to the imposter hen and refused to return to the nest. They were left a few hours on a cool but not cold day before they were given back to her, so hopefully they hatch. 🙄
