For many years, Brooklyn, IL was challenged as the oldest black town in the United States, mostly to the towns of Eatonville and Fort Mose, both in Florida. Brooklyn actually started as an interracial community with white folks helping out the African-Americans. However, in later years, tensions divided the two races. Industrial times would be brought to the town. Today, Brooklyn is a struggling community - along with its neighbors Venice and East St. Louis, Illinois.
I visit a historical marker that was placed behind Quinn Chapel African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church during the summer of 2021. It talked about the beginnings of the town, and how it was founded by Mother Priscilla Baltimore.

I grew up as a young adolescent in East Saint Louis, IL and I was NEVER taught this history. There was a certain little pink slip that I visited in Brooklyn, IL while moved back to the area, and still, no one bothered to point out to me this very important Illinois history!

George McShan is my great uncle he is my grandfather William McShan’s brother my Grandmother Nellie Jordon lived in Brooklyn for many years we often visited her in our youth I love the history and you can literally feel the presence of the past when we visited Brooklyn. I also remember being a member of Antioch Baptist Church as a kid singing in the choir and performing Easter Day speeches what wonderful times getting dressed up and having Easter egg hunts and receiving baskets of candy ❤️We since settled in Springfield, IL in the mid eighties but from the early 70’s till the mid 80’s we loved visiting our relatives and friends there!

It's these unique little gems of history that get passed up and if not for you, and people like you, these places would go unnoticed.

Thanks so much! The St. Louis area has so much hidden unique history and that's one of my goals for this channel is to help shed light on those places.
