The Brooklyn Park Police Department is hosting one of the largest K9 competitions in the country. Eighty-six K9 officers from as far away as Fargo are competing in the trials at Champlin Park and Park Center high schools.
The two-day event is broken down into different segments: obedience, agility work and criminal apprehension. Organizers are hoping the event will educate the public on what K9s really do.
"They can locate explosives, narcotics and people," said Brooklyn Park officer Mike Ploumen, who organized the event. "They certainly make our jobs easier and faster and they do protect us in certain situations."
Brooklyn Park patrol officer Tom Dunnwald just started working with his K9 partner, Kilo, a German shepherd from Slovakia. During the competition, Dunnwald had to show he could control Kilo's rambunctious spirit.
"I was very happy with his performance in all the events. He made me proud," said Dunnwald.
Brooklyn Park police say they average around 500 canine deployments per year.
