What are the best ultra trail running shoes? Maybe the Brooks Caldera 6? I tested them in the mud, snow, sand and on ice. Here is my shoe review ...
This is an independent review. I bought all my pairs of Caldera with my own money. One of the races I tested them, was the Seventh Seal at UTMB Kullamannen: • Running the Seventh Se... .

Very in depth review of someone who actually used a pair of shoes for a proper testing! I might actually put these on my list to test the fit when i go for new ultra shoes! Thank you!

Cheers made. On which shoes do you run now? My feet are pretty wide and the space of the toe box is pretty okay. With all the downhills I use half a size bigger; with the heel lock that works to spare my toes. The sole is big though, that does feel strange in the beginning.🙏

@@RU-vidTheRunningDutchman I was actually using the Saucony peregrine series, which were doing very good until i got a grown in nail and noticed i had to size up a half too. So now i'm actually using my old altra olympus shoes until i can buy a new pair to get me through the Muur ultra trail in april again!

Now that's a very realistic review! Thank you! I'm afraid they will be a bit too narrow for me, but I guess I will try them in a store first.

Trying them in a shop is always a good thing. For me they are wide enough and I have pretty wide (flat) feet, so I hope they work for you as well. They are as wide as the Inov-8 in extra wide. Keep on running!

It's my first time to invest on a pair of Calderas. Specifically the 6s. So glad I came across your channel considering you have always ran Calderas compared to your other trail shoes.. Thank you for this episode.

Cheers mate. I really like them; but I do believe that we all have different feet, with different needs; so I hope the Calderas are a good fit for you as well. Keep on running!

Good review. Great production of the video - informative and also somehow calming to watch. Very nice! I'm about a month into running with the Caldera 6. Agree about the short laces! Cushioning is good but as as a heavier runner (188cm/96kg) I find the midsole slightly too firm for me. Very responsive though and good energy return. I added a second insole/sockliner and that helps for softer comfort. I just ordered a pair of Asics Trabuco Max 2, hoping they are slightly softer and will get me through the longer runs. Thanks again!

🙏 Thank you for the extra info. Yeah, I'm 77 kilo; that's a difference in how a shoe responds. Let me know how the Asics are; I like cushioning and I'm looking for something else to test. Keep on running!

Great review.!! Full disclosure to anyone reading this; I am a Brooks Ambassador. I have two pairs of these but plenty of life left in them - currently up to 450 on my yellow pair - it will be interesting to see how I get on with the cushioning when it hits more than 500km - especially now - as I am going to just them on road mainly now (more on that in a sec).. the interesting thing is that with the Glycerin 20 I can easily get above the point you hit and those shoes use the same foam - I will take my yellow ones up to the same mark to see how it goes for me (but I totally agree on the environmental considerations!! Too many shoes, regardless of brand, focus on performance at the cost of durability). When the Caldera 6 came out and I got it gifted to me, it was love at first sight, and I said straight away.. best Brooks shoe ever! (and I still think that) - I think I would add that this is best for non-technical trails - the broad base and stack height can work against it where the Cascadia works better (love the v17) I have just ordered the Caldera 7 (I will be using them in the Plogging World Champs in September and wanted the yellow colorway so I got them a bit early) - I am really excited to try that out - it seems that they have made some big improvements all around. Excited!! But .. back to the road use.. this sounds a bit crazy, but I think the caldera might just be a perfect recovery/injury shoe! i have a bit of an achilles problemat the moment, but instead of reaching to a more stable road shoe, I think the Caldera is making a perfect road shoe too as i nurse this injury! it is soooooo stable and cushioned. I was smiling from using it in this situation (i don't find the lugs impacting on the road.. although the 7 looks a bit more aggressive - maybe they will last longer for you?) hahha.. i have rambled on, but I was sooo excited to see your review

Thank you so much for sharing your experience. I've run Skyline Scotland on the Cascadia, they are great as well. For everything over 25k i do prefer the Caldera and I think they are performing well on technical terrain, but I see your point of the height of the sole. I just bought a pair of Caldera 7, so I'm going to see and feel what the difference is. I'm very curious. What I like about the Caldera that, for my feet, it's out of the box, on and running an ultra without problems. Testing Asics, Inov and Altra's ultra running shoes now. Next review will be on Hoka, but it's not going to be great. Sorry for all the Hoka fans. Thanks again for your rambling, it's very welcome. I probably will reach out to you soon for an interview for my website; if you're interested. Your plogging adventures inspired me to bring more often a garbage back on my runs to keep my local trails clean. 🙏

We will; just let me get organised. Too many stories to write. Ultra running costs a lot of time 🤣

Hi not sure if you will see this. I'm just starting out with running in later life. I'm looking for a decent pair to get me started. I'll be doing a bit of rd running that leads to a reasonable flat grass areas and also some cobbles. The caldera is very reasonably priced and like the look of them. Do you think these would be a good starter trainer for this purpose?
@WayeOfLife
@WayeOfLife 2 дня назад
@@markgardiner1742 Hiya.. you could also go for a regular shoe with a bit of grip instead of a pure trail shoe. Like the ghost is happy on that surface. But yep.. the caldera is a nice option. I would first though try it on.. or if you order from the brooks website you can return if not happy

WOWWW!!! Now THAT is what I call a review!!! It drives me crazy when shoetubers give their "full review" after only 100 or worse many of them even only 50km!!!🤦🏻‍♀️ Of course we're all different and no shoe will be perfect for everyone, but still you make us wanna give them a try, despite that yeah 700km is certainly not very good durability!! I totally totally agree that we should expect 1500km or even up to 2000km from a shoe, even if we have to relegate them to shorter training runs after 1000km or so! I've run two 50k ultras in my Speedgoat 5, 400km on them now, and they're very comfy but would only recommend them for dry weather 'cause as soon as the slopes start to get slick I call them the Slipgoat ... they are really road-to-trail shoes, which is what I need most of the time where I live, but looking forward to checking out your review !! Happy to subscribe!!🙋🏻‍♀️

It's coming up soon; and throwing in some scientific criticism as well 😝 Yeah, I'm definitely not an influencer. Too critical for that. Good is good, but bad is bad, and I don't think brands like that. Even if they could learn from it. Especially Hoka, with the Speedgoat ... 🤓

I have just bought my second pair of caldera 6 so that I can rotate them. This is the best review of this shoe that I have seen. Have you any plans to review caldera 7?

Thank you so much. I just ordered a pair of Caldera 7, to see what the difference is. Yet, I have to review the Hoka Speedgoat, Inov-8 Trailfly Ultra and the Altra Olympus first; so lots of kilometers to run. 😝

1:52 bro, are these trails outside of netherlands, right? You have flat country, also majority of roads are asphalt, even in parks....i assume its difficult to do big mileage in trail shoes inside netherlands...?😊
@YouTubeTheRunningDutchman
@YouTubeTheRunningDutchman 5 месяцев назад
Germany, Sweden, Belgium, Italy and England. I live next to the forest. Lots of trails and single tracks here. If you stay away from the big cities you have miles and miles of trails. Most races I do are in Belgium. O live close to the border and like the Ardennes as it gives me some elevation. So you can do the miles in the Netherlands, just not the elevation. Working on the Ameland movie now. We even have bog there 😝

Good morning Jakutz, I'm sorry, I can't answer your question. I think there are too many variables; weight, surface your walking on, speed, uphill and downhill or on a flat surface. The Brooks Caldera are good shoes. I would just give them a try.

I started with 13 which works on mostly flat trails, but I moved a size up for the mountains. More space on downhills for my toes. 😄
