Polight's analysis of religion is very articulate. After taking a couple of Religious Studies courses as an Undergrad, I started to do some research on my own. There are a lot of similarities between the major religions (Islam, Christianity, and Judaism). Despite these similarities there are inconsistencies between the three that lead me to believe that it is all a matter of interpretation. One common theme, as Polight mentioned, is oppression and servitude. Christianity was forced upon Africans in America as a part of the reconditioning process (from being free to being a slave). Now, over 400 years later, Black people still turn to that same religion for help and guidance? I agree that religion as we know it has stunted the growth of Blacks in America

The main problem is that black people and most people on this earth have a false understanding of the word. They keep praying like God is going to help them but in actuality, we are supposed to be helping ourselves. Theres a clear pattern... questions not being answered and being told not to ask questions instead. As a child I started asking questions for the sake of clarity, to really understand what I was being taught and wanting to decide for myself whether I agree with the "beliefs". I remember often being told that this what "we believe"... and even as a child I thought, hold up! How can you tell me what I believe? I realised that when people don't answer you, often its because they don't have the answer to give. They are not seeking, just blindly following. I will ask the question that I always ask people who pander this kind of assumption that religion is holding back black people, both in USA, Carribean and Africa. Do you think if today black people became atheists , we as a people will eliminate poverty, hunger and any other problems we face?

Jesus, Moses, Paul, Saul, Solomon, David, Job, etc., were all Africans. About 95%-99% of the Bible was written in Africa about Africans. 1. The only white men that were in the area where the Bible was written at the time it was written were the ones persecuting believers and practitioners of the word. 2. Christianity started in the heart of Africa and spread like a wildfire to every other nation, so black people were likely to hear about and take part in it first, and also likely got disconnected from christianity by slavery exactly like everything else in their history. 3. The white colonizers in control of the area at the time saw how quickly christianity was spreading and figured out they couldn't "stomp it out" so they decided to take it over so they allowed Jesus to be killed and created a pope who is supposed to be The Almighty incarnate(in the flesh). Soon afterwards, they went on to murder, ravage, and loot the world and use the Name of The Lord to claim Devine right to do so. 4. And last but not least, imagine that you and everyone in your world has been abducted by a group of people who look, speak, and act differently than anyone you've ever seen. Do you adopt and pray to their strange, new deity for deliverance, or do you pray to the almighty GOD that you heard your grandmother praying to? Brother Polight, bless you. I have never heard ANYONE explain religion and its connective bases in my life. Everything you said and stated about how the Bible, Koran, etc as created was always a question in my mind. Because how could so many variations of stories about religious Gods be at some point here on Earth and simultaneously tell stories that were very similar; but the Gods were named different names. Also, the timing of occurrences and events that were told and recorded seemed to have something (time/occurrences) missing; yet books telling about events that occurred...seemed to overlap continuously. It just seemed as if the stories were borrowed and retold to fit each and every people (different ethnic groups).

A downfall and serious handicap. As a black brother(and one who has always been a completely spiritual and non-religious believer), I have always asked myself time and time again why so many fellows black people are saturated with religion (and the bible and qu'ran). There is a reason most of the people I associate with are not black (whether African American or African, haitian whatever). This handicap needs to end and sooner than later.

I appreciate this brother's intellect, research, and intent. I do believe that religion was forced upon people by oppressors who stood to place themselves to be in a higher power/position of others and have it serve to their benefit. People have to understand a few things, regardless of your religious choice or faith, if you don't have a relationship with whom you pray to, all will have/find error within it. Why? Because it is an interpretation of what they believe God told them. As for me, I believe in the Holy Spirit, I do believe in Jesus. Not because of the Bible, not because of the stories told, but because of my relationship with whom I pray to. It allows me to treat myself and others better, and not feel that I am better/saved/or headed to a place that others won't go when I die. Yet, because he allows me to LIVE! I have one life, and within it, I choose to serve God, not religion, not man, nor picture of what a man would/should have looked like.
There is no relationship you make it up its a delusion. I kw it feels real but its not. I once really thought i was speaking to god. But my life n my mind showed diff. I was happier before i went n when stopped prayin or believing. I was finally in reality, life, me, and true love. They definately got you in a chokehold, it ur imagination. There isnt even a hell.
