Marc Marquez: “Feels Like I Won, A Day I'll Never Forget, 'Impossible' to Repeat”
Before the race, I took a cocktail [of painkillers] - tonight I’ll have another type of cocktail!
Despite losing his first German Grand Prix at Sachsenring since 2009, Marc Marquez was all smiles. The eight-time world champion finished a challenging weekend with a surprise second place, forming a unique podium double with his brother Alex Marquez. This marked the first time two brothers shared a ‘MotoGP’-era podium since 1997.
Marc expressed, “I'm super happy to share the podium with my brother. It's a day I will never forget because it will be difficult to repeat in the future. This season, it’s difficult for me to be on the podium, and for him too. So, to find the same Sunday when both of us are on the podium was something a bit unreal. He's a very talented rider and today he showed it.”
The race changed when Jorge Martin crashed, preventing a family battle for third place. Marc admitted, “When I was catching my brother, there were many question marks. But, unfortunately for Martin, good for us, because this is racing, and we were both on the podium.”
Marc's weekend was tough, dealing with technical issues and a highside that left him with a broken finger and bruised ribs. Despite this, he finished sixth in the Sprint race with painkillers. “I didn't expect to finish on the podium, but today I got up and felt better. I told the team, ‘Today I can ride aggressively. I can ride in Marquez mode’.”
The race was not without challenges. After breaking his screen in a tangle with Franco Morbidelli, Marc went ‘all-in’. “My plan was to make the comeback slowly, but the contact with Morbidelli made me click: ‘Now all-in’! I had a good battle with Bastianini. We overtook each other twice. Then I caught [Morbidelli] and overtook him aggressively.”
Reflecting on the podium finish with his brother, Marc said, “If you said to me on Thursday, ‘You will not win, but you will share the podium with your brother,’ I would say, ‘Okay!’ Then the weekend became super difficult, but this second place covers everything. Before the race, I took a cocktail [of painkillers], but tonight I will take another type of cocktail!”
Marc remains third in the world championship, 56 points behind leader Francesco Bagnaia.
