I'd add Diamine Ancient Copper, Waterman 4001 Brilliant Brown and of course the very gorgeous JH 1670 Caroube De Chypre! I also adore Noodler's Walnut Brown and Pilot Iroshizuku Yama-Guri! There's something very special about writing with brown inks...! Great comparisons! 💜💐

Yama-Guri and Noodlers Walnut are my two favorite browns! I also currently have De Atramentis Document Sepia in my Lamy 2000, one of my main work pens, and it's definitely a contender for the top brown spot (wish it was just a hair darker, tho).

These comparative reviews are so helpful. FWIW I'm writing with Diamine Ancient Copper today. From a wet broad Lamy Al-Star nib it has quite a bit of shading. I rather like it. I'm using it in a Clairefontaine Age Bag A4 notebook.

I like brown inks quite a bit, and you have one of my three favorite browns here. It's the De Atramentis Chocolate. I think it's a great brown from writing letters. My other two favorites are Waterman Absolute Brown, and Montblanc Toffee Brown.

Very nice selection, and some unexpected ones here, particularly enjoying the Diamine Ochre.. so I added it to my next order.
@PenultimateDave
@PenultimateDave 4 года назад
Thanks Pete, the Diamine Ochre for me is very close to SBRE Brown, I've found this with a lot of Diamine and Akkerman inks, if you can't get one you can usually get an almost identical shade.

Lovely selection as usual. To my eye, the red-brown inks belong better in with brown than the gold-brown ones, but that's personal choice. My favourite brown inks are Graf von Faber-Castell Hazelnut Brown and Herbin Cacao du Bresil which lives on the border between brown and grey.
@PenultimateDave

GvFC Hazelnut Brown has been on my to buy list for several years now but I never have picked up a bottle, I think around the time I added it to my wishlist I added Pilot Iroshizuku Tsukushi and fell in love with that and haven't wanted a hazelnut brown since.

I have a thing for brown inks, so it's quite interesting to see them in a comparison video. For a reddish brown J. Herbin, Cafe des Iles is my go-to atm. But I recently bought quite a few Diamine inks that I still need to swatch and try out in a pen. I also have three brown Monteverde inks: Scotch Brown, Brown Sugar and Canyon Rust. Sailor Jentle do-you looks almost black in an EF nib, I think. Robert Oster isn't widely available where I live, but I may be able to get samples.

I like the SBRE Brown but it is very light in my pens. I’m waiting on a broad nib TWSBI so I can hopefully enjoy them more. Don’t forget, the one thing your swatches do not show. The SBRE Brown ink was made for it’s shading properties. When you write with it you get amazing shading all the time. You don’t see that in any ink swatch., 😀👍🏻
@Michelt007
@Michelt007 8 месяцев назад
Great review! I like the use of swatch to reveal the fine details about ink, such as how much they shade or sheen or shimmer (none did here) which may be difficult for the camera to pick up from writing samples, even when they are present. For "symmetry", I was expecting that Diamine Raw Sienna (looks similar to Diamine Ochre) would be shown next to its brother Burnt Sienna, but it will maybe be covered into another review!
@chrislj2890

Looking through my swatches I have my favorite Noodler's Brown, and also Sailor Shikiori Okuyama, Iroshizuku Tsukushi, Colorverse Methuselah Grove, Monteverde Moonstone, Pelikan Brilliant Brown, Diamine Burnt Sienna (mine doesn't look as red as yours), Monteverde Copper Noir, and Noodler's Rome Burning. This Rome Burning is very interesting, going on as brown but if you run water over it yellow seeps out and leaves a permanent purple on the paper. Nathan Tardiff is very clever when it comes to unusual inks.
@PenultimateDave
@PenultimateDave 4 года назад
I'm definitely going to have to try some of those browns. I've avoided Colorverse mostly because of the price point, a few friends have recommended the Monteverde Copper Noir to me and Noodler's Rome Burning. I don't yet have any Sailor Shikiori inks yet but I may have to look at getting some.
@chrislj2890
@chrislj2890 4 года назад
@@PenultimateDave The Colorverse I got for free when I bought a pen during the holidays. I don't think I will ever buy any of their inks since I don't think they are worth the money. That Sailor is the only one I own other than Jentle Black and it's really nice, but they are expensive, running $24 or $25 for 50 ml and $15 for 20 ml. I received my Diamine Blue Edition inks and they are fun, and I'm using the "Holly" right now. It's a nice dark green with red sheen and good shading.

Hi Dave, Very nice comparisons. If you can find Noodlers 41Brown it is fantastic. It has a but of green shimmer to it. What is the permanence it those inks? Drop a bit of water in the center and see what happens. Also how archival are the inks? (PS. I'm not affiliated with Noodeler's. Just a fan of permanent inks.)

Ancient copper more brown than Hal's Old Brown (?) or black brown - chocolate brown. Really think some of these manufacturers take liberties. Use Ancient Copper myself.

Tracie, have you tried Diamine Cult Pens Deep Dark Brown, Diamine Macassar and Espresso, Herbin Cacao du Brésil, R&K Sepia or Sailor Shikiori Doyou? The latter is very saturated and very dark with my Japanese H-M nib on Tomoe River, Clairefontaine Triomphe and Rodhia DotPad black cover. Cacao du Brésil is a bit unsaturated but a greyish dark brown.

Dave, You always are able to draw more from SBREBrown than I can. Some of this can be attributed to your preference for nibs wider than mine. However, I wonder if you don't also have a better writing technique than I. My results with that ink are insipid, yours have some flair.
@PenultimateDave
@PenultimateDave 4 года назад
Thanks Joel, I'm sure you have just as nice a writing style! I think it's most likely due to the wider nib but also how wet the nib writes. I do get quite a variance though between nibs, I've had SBRE Brown inked up in a few pens in the same Currently Inked and it can go from a very dark to a very light brown. I've had similar instances with J. Herbin Lie de Thé too.

@PenultimateDave

Unfortunately there isn't anywhere in the UK selling Akkerman inks. Closest place would be from Akkerman in the Netherlands or from a number of retailers in the US but then shipping costs and import tax/duty will be higher.
