Heather dreamed of having a skunk ever since she was a child. She then got Toccoa from a rescue group. She made sure she got all the right permits to own her. Toccoa adjusted really quickly to her new home, including befriending Nola, her cat sister. She loves stealing food and playing with toys. Together they are a dynamic team that brings so much joy into everyone's lives.

love that! I got asked to go into a montessori school for a presentation. The children were fascinated and so full of questions. It was fun to share skunk facts and help educate the kids.. and teachers and see all the smiles :)

When I visited my Grandmother in Medford, Oregon as a teen decades ago, a girl in the neighborhood had a pet skunk which was so amazing. I was just thinking about her and her skunk last week and then here's this great video .

@@CuddleBuddiesChannel I live in the very southern part of Canada, I live in a very rural area, I grew up with many animals & have spent my life rescuing them all, now I run a small shelter & travel the streets at night looking for any animals that need help. Your channel is wonderful and always makes me smile, there really are angels walking amongst us

@@tbirdpimp07 it is if you were born & raised around animals, I pose no threat & they instinctively sense that, I even handle bees & hornets, cradle injured raccoons in my arms on the way to the wildlife center, mind you my knowledge of animals guarantees I never step out of my bounds & never forget what I’m dealing with & that’s the key

You know, it's illegal here in Finland to remove the glands from a skunk if not threatened by a severe disease. It's their one and only defence against predators like the cat. It's kind of like declawing an animal. Laws in the states are yet again too loose.

Thing is, a skunk sprays in defense. A good skunk caretaker never lets them be in danger, so they're unnecessary. When (yes, not if, but when. They're perfect candidates for it, so sooner or later it'll happen) the skunk is truly domesticated, that'll be one of the first traits bred out of a domestic population.

@@budgetcoinhunter There simply is nothing else than a health hazard for the animal, which can justify the removal of the glands. It's like clipping bird wings or declawing and defanging predators, it goes against the animals natural instincts, which will remain like a phantom pain when something is removed - phantom pain itself is also another factor. People do it simply out of selfish motives. That's why it's illegal in here, it's considered to be animal cruelty. Introducing the animal to only half domesticated predator wouldn't also count as good safe keeping. The cat even in this video keeps entertaining itself by whacking the skun constantly with it's paw. Looks cute to some, but the cat is just fulfilling it's predatory instincts. The skunk also has it's tail in defensive position almost constantly. People in countries with loose legislation have been alienating from nature so long that it's hard to see what is justifiable and what is not. Largest errors is the way how people objectify animals and start to treat them as property, when in reality not even the most common domestic animals should ever be treated that way.

when i was a kid found a dead skunk in road then all her babies started to appear i rescued 1 my self took it to get DE pouched the operation was a life or death operation for skunk no guarantee the operation is spoused to be done before the baby's eyes open said the vet every thing went fine unfortunately came home one day although dog seemed to get on with skunk came home one day dog eaten the skunk the skunk would ride on dogs back and every thing that's why no matter what the wild belongs in the wild

I had a total of 6 skunks growing up. It was before it was cool . Nearly 50 years ago. They were very friendly and gentle. My friends thought I was crazy. Also had a raccoon and crow.

@Frank they have a very faint smell. Also ,they are very playful. In the winter they wanted to hibernate but they would come out if you brought some food for them.

What an incredible story. Thank you for taking such great care of Toccoa. Too many people fear and hate skunks without knowing just how intelligent they are and how important they are to maintaining balanced eco systems. Congrats too on working with skunk rescue groups. Well done.

and thank you for liking and commenting :) Yes part of this was in hopes to shed some light on an animal that is so often misinterpreted. They really are very submissive, quiet, gentle, playful, intelligent creatures. Sadly man is one of the very few reasons skunks dont live past 2/3 yrs old in the wild.

My cat is pretty gentle.. she loves to chase lizards and catch them but has never so much made one scratch or mark on one... when I brought Toccoa home she was 6 weeks old... a little kit. So Nola has been with her as she's grown to now be 8 months old! They have their unique way of playing and its cute to watch :)

My skunk would cuddle with my bulldog. But he hated my cat and monkey lol. They would all sleep on the bed with me but the cat and monkey just couldn't sleep too close to the skunk

yes many garbage put out that animals can get into and get their heads stuck in, is dangerous and can be fatal to the curious hungry animal searching for food. If only we as a human race could be better about properly securing our garbage/ recycles and start getting away from plastics and be more enviromentally friendly...

lol. So far no one has run. I'd say 99% of the time Im asked "what is that" followed by "does it spray?" sometimes after answering so many times, i'll joke that she only sprays on command to which I have to laugh at the bulging eyes and agasp faces haha. But after knowing she cant spray, many just want to get close and observe her... she just head bops around without a care

Looking through the comments, I expected to see someone ask if Toccoa is descented but see it hasn't been asked. So, is she descented? I had friends in my youth who had a young pet skunk that I played with that still had all it's "stinky parts" and there was the occasional little "leak" but it wasn't meant in anger, we just kept going with the play.

yes avg is about 10 but can be up to 15. Very shocking compared to the fact many dont make it past their first winter, and if they do... 2-3 yrs is about normal in the wild.

@@hrlocke Sometimes, animals do a _ton_ better under human care, both in length, but also quality of life. The skunk seems to be one of those. Considering their even temperament and omnivorous diet, they make a good candidate for full-on domestication. Obviously, one of the first things we'd select for is reduced size and potency of the infamous scent glands (since they wouldn't need this living with humans).

When I was younger, my dad came across a very young skunk on a bridge, and he was able to rescue it. He brought it home, it was quite the novelty. Within a couple of days, he was able to find someone who was skunk savvy, so we had to goodbye. Anyway, Toccoa is so beautiful with that cocoa color. I just Googled skunk colors and was surprised at some of the colors, lavender, and apricot colors that skunks can be.

Our kitten was out playing with a baby skunk s few weeks ago . I was shocked ! I just stood and watched , it was adorable . Something I never thought I would feel comfortable just watching happen .

Just imagine if at the same exact time, A Rescue baby Skunk, baby Raccoon, and a baby Opossum came in and 1 family took all 3 in to take care of. This is on top of a few kittens and a puppy . They'd all grow up together not knowing in the wild they were foes. If animals have this potential, why can't ALL humans do the same around the world 🌎. ?

We have had various litters of skunks in our backyard. We have been out in chairs with 4 kits bouncing around and charging each other. Our cat knows enough to stay away from them. We learned early on to talk when we are in the backyard at night. We do NOT want to surprise momma.....

Was she descented or is it a matter of trust? I always found skunks cute, came across them a few times and they weren't aggressive, but I did walk away carefully. I imagine a skunk would make an interesting deterrent for a burglar!

I remember seeing a documentary about a woman that owned 5 skunks. Little rascals would open the fridge and take apples and other snacks when she wasn't looking, (even tho they're on a feeding schedule and weren't supposed to, lol). it was really cute. definitely made me want skunks after learning how simple their diet is.

yes, its not very common... but a true fact... they also can come in apricot, lavendar, smoke, albino, and theres a spotted skunk!

Little skunks actually don't smell it all it's only when they spray. Most captive skunks won't spray at all and they never smell bad.

Ok after a few different videos about pet skunks im still left with one big question.. do they not stink? I cant stand the smell of skunk spray and it sticks to everything, id think it would make the owners home smell horrible? Perhaps im wrong, but id love to know what the reality is when it comes to the smell..

I had a pet skunk when I was a teen. He had the run of the house. Yo-yo was never caged. He’d stand on his hind legs when I’d offer him a treat and then he’d carry it over to his dish to eat it. He got a bath with baby shampoo every Friday evening. Of course he was descented but still had an odor. If he didn’t get his bath then I wasn’t allowed to go out with my friends. He was very sweet but I had a pet raccoon for a while and the raccoon was much more interactive with me. This was back in the late 60’s.
