I have disassembled and cleaned the Browning designed Model 94 Winchester and the Model 11 Remington and never cease to be amazed at how John Moses Browning's mind worked to design such perfect mechanics. The 1917 is even more amazing. He was a true genius.

I would love to get a replica BAR (Browning M1918) one day. Such a huge gun, and they were giving it to 16-18 year old guys! Sixteen pounds! (7.3Kg) And the M1922 variant was TWENTY FOUR POUNDS! (11Kg) It was also a whopping 47 inches long, almost four goddamn feet (1200mm).

Short recoil with bolt accelerator, locking wedge and striker. The bolt accelerator design is very ingenious as it does not impart any acceleration for the first few millimeters of travel, allowing the barrel and the bolt to go at the same speed until the wedge unlocks, and then absorbs the kinetic energy of the barrel assembly and transfers it to the bolt, throwing it back with great force. This is the classical machine gun mechanism, perfected and simplified over time. Great AUTOCAD work!

Considering how complex the Bofors 40 mm's basic mechanism is, even without over engineering, that would take a lot of time and effort (and donations) by vbbsmyt: maritime.org/doc/boforstm252/part2.htm The gun is so powerful that it needs its own hydraulic recoil cylinder, the design of which (the Schneider recoil/buffer mechanism) was used on Schneider-designed French, US, and Russian artillery in WWI and WWII. That part alone would be complex enough to be the subject of a short video.

@stanrogers5613 3 года назад
For what it's worth (and I know that's not much), the "Sir" goes with the person's given/first name, not with the family name/last name/surname. So, in the case of Sir Isaac Newton, you can say "Sir Isaac" alone, but you can't say "Sir Newton". Knighthoods go back farther in history than real last names do. (To be really, really pedantic, the knighthood dies with the knight, so Isaac Newton ceased being a "Sir" when he ceased being alive... but, to be fair, almost nobody follows that rule anymore. It feels like taking an accomplishment away from the person you're talking about.)

So at 4:17 we can see how the extractor rides in the track by the peg. What keeps the extractor from just falling down the wrong way in the track? What happens to the extractor when you cycle the action without any cartridges?
@PhotonlcInduction
@PhotonlcInduction 6 лет назад
The cartridge itself stops it from falling. It pulls it into the groove on the bolt head that holds the rim. The new cartridge will push the old one out the bottom. If there was no cartridge it would most likely just fall down into the groove and do nothing. Note the horizontal spring loaded pin ensures the extractor is on a one way path when it has a cartridge and is at the end of its travel.
@SpruceReduce8854
@SpruceReduce8854 6 лет назад
Ok, I figured it out from this video: m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cpm_VxIM3-I.html There's a small ledge at the top of the track that prevents it from falling down. This is another reason why the peg on the extractor is springy and compressible. When the bolt goes forward the peg spring compresses so the peg can get above the ledge, and when the bolt is going back the peg is extended, so the ledge blocks it.

Always wondered how the water got from the water can into the cooling jacket....
@kirkstinson7316
@kirkstinson7316 4 года назад
The steam chest (water can) would only have a little water in it to start. You filled the water jacket with the rear plug. As the water in the jacket boiled steam would exit via the top tube then down the hose to the chest. There it would condense back to water. This water could then be poured back in to the jacket. There were no pumps or suction device on the gun to circulate the water
@JF-xq6fr
@JF-xq6fr Год назад
Great work. Question: Where the water jacket attaches on the receiver side, how is it attached? Is it friction fitted over the barrel and soldered to seal, or perhaps screwed on with some form of gasket? Thanks.

Most heavy machine guns of WW1 used a water jacket to keep the barrel cool during sustained fire. The heat from the cartridges caused the water in the jacket to boil, and the steam was piped off into a condenser can. Without water cooling the barrels would rapidly over heat and be written off. If the gunners allowed the steam to vent into the atmosphere, the plume of steam would quickly identify their position to enemy gunners. Also every can of water had to be carried by soldiers several miles up to the front, so conserving water was very important. A good example of the condenser can be seen in my animation the Vickers MG ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gG2YfcAJrtU.html

Excellent video yet again vbbsmyt! Fun Fact: This was the first gun to my knowledge to have a hinged top feed cover allowing a new belt to be simply laid in the gun rather than having to be pulled through like all prior machine guns. Also, there is a more detailed WWII training video on how the M1919 (the air-cooled version of this gun) works. It shows some of Browning's subtle design innovations that cannot be seen in this video, like the cocking lever doubling as the out-of-battery safety, and the finger-like extension on the feed pawl preventing the feed from jamming if the extractor doesn't grip a cartridge: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Ub4LMiM7ZOk.html
