Browsing the Old osu! Forums 

osu! used to be a very different experience for everyone, as you touched on. it was a small community where everyone knew everyone. and everyone was interested in the future of the game; interested in exploring new creative avenues via skinning, story-filled storyboards, new beatmap styles or just bringing what they could to the community. i guess this is why i still push for people to explore such avenues even today, and is why we are focusing lazer on further allowing creativity via new ruleset, mod and hitobject possibilities. for me, community and creativity is still what drives osu!, and rankings are something that happened and became a focus for many along the way. it does make me a bit sad that the forums have taken a back seat for many, but i'm proud that we can keep them running and (as with everything osu!) have a complete history dating back to day 1. personally i don't think i've backed off with my involvement in the community since those days, but i focus my effort elsewhere (generally i'm only looking at the help and dev forums these days). emails are my top priority because i enjoy communicating with people one-on-one and making sure everyone is happy and catered to. oh, and the the weird "this beatmap has been deleted" was caused by a migration issue, where about 1000 posts were permanently lost as they were internally considered to be graveyarded beatmap thread ids.

one thing that makes me sad about reading older forum posts is seeing thelewa :(

I was once browsing the forums once a long time ago and I ran across a thread talking about Darrihuka leaving the scene. I noticed that I knew most of the people posting, I knew everyone that posted there. I had played at least one map made by every person on that thread (mostly thorough old best of and other beatmap packs it seems) but it was a weird experience.
