I first heard this song when I was a kid, eating at the mission with my homeless mom. My goal as a child when I was grown was to live inside. I've accomplished my goal. This song has always given me hope.
I know one thing. A Bruce Cockburn song will be played at my funeral service. This one is my favorite at the moment. Greetings from Germany to all Bruce Cockburn fans.
What a beautiful gift this song was. Remember listening to it when it first came out. I was 15 and homeless and had just gotten a job washing dishes in a restaurant. It played a lot in that kitchen that summer and it always made me feel good. About 7 years later, I was flying to Germany to begin a co-op job for an engineering firm. This song was on the plane's playlist, and I remember listening to it over and over while thinking back about all that I'd been through to get to where I was now.
Back in the day, an old boyfriend introduce this song to me. Everyonce in a while I think about him and this song instantly comes to mind. Rest in peace, Jay.
How in the hell can anyone give this a thumbs down? Seriously? Great voice, great lyrics, great guitar. 1 person with talent. No hordes of dancers and blinding lasers. Seek help.
Oh, my God, Bruce, don't you EVER die! You made me cry. I taped this for my son when I was going through a divorce a zillion years ago and labeled "happy songs" along with Harry Nilsson's "moonbeam Song." I love your song so much, I STILL listen to it.
This is one of the best songs ever written. It is as good as anything ever written by John and Paul, Elton and Bernie, on and on. It must be wonderful to know that something you created has touched so many people. Thank you, sir.
This has always BEEN A FAVORITE OF MINE Iheard it recently and it caused it to resurface in my head.THIS SONG IS ADDICTIVE WITH IT'S BEAT, BRUCE! I keep playing it OVER AND OVER THE GUITAR WORK IS JUST STELLAR
Over my life I have had Bruce’s songs come and go thru my life. Always liked how they sounded and very catchy but never really listened to the words. I was young and stupid. Now that I’m older I listen to the words and realize how amazing he is. A national treasure for Canada
I remember seeing Bruce years ago when he was on tour in the States. We in the audience were also singing his songs with him. He’s a Canadian treasure.
It's 1 day after Hurricane Sandy in Brooklyn. After falling asleep to the sound of galeforce winds whipping through the panes in my windows....I woke up to silence, un-pinned the sheets from my windows, and saw - a bit of sun already. I was okay, my block was okay (one of the ones that DIDN'T get flooded), I still had power and most of my friends are all okay. I immediately thought of this song - "Sun's up, uh-huh, looks okay, the world survives into another day...." Thank you.
I've seen Bruce in about 4 different States in the last 20+ years. I'd follow him to the moon if I could afford it. He's a brilliant musician and a lovely, lovely soul
Absolutely the most rounded musician I have ever heard/seen. Bruce Cockburn is a poet in a musicians body. His fingerwork is superhuman. Thank God for him.
"Freighters on the nod on the surface of the bay, One of these days we're going to sail away" That line has always sounded like the perfect melding of rhythms - it always makes my heart stop.
A brilliant and underrated singer, poet masterful guitar player...Thank you Canada for the gift of Bruce Cockburn... Lookin forward to seeing/hearing again this Feb 2018 in Santa Cruz....We need his insight now more than ever.
I grew up on Bruce Cocburn. I saw him live in the late 60's in a Montreal coffee shop way before he was known. He was the greatest influence on my subsequent musical career as a singer-songwriter. I learned how to write meaningful lyrics and how to pick a guitar from. That video brings tears to my eyes everytime I watch it.
When my soul is need of solace I turn to Bruce to sooth the raging and help me to cease pacing the cage. Someday all this really isn't going to mean a damn thing, I'll just be more star dust like all those who have gone before; better lighten up and enjoy@

On this day in 1980 {March 16th} "Wondering Where the Lions Are" by Bruce Cockburn entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart at position #85; eleven weeks later on June 1st, 1980 it peaked at #21 {for 2 weeks} and spent 17 weeks on the Top 100... He had one other Top 100 record, ""If I Had a Rocket Launcher", it peaked at #88 in 1994... Between 1971 and 1997 in his native Canada he had twenty-one records the RPM Pop Singles chart, his biggest hit was "If a Tree Falls", it peaked at #8 in 1989... Mr. Cockburn will celebrate his 70th* birthday in two months on May 27th, 2015... * I hope he handles it better than me, I turned 70 this past January 15th...
This came out in 79, I love his emphasis on soldiers marching with shiny helmets where their brains should be. Still looking out for the lions but time and experience has a way of removing the fear. Thanks Bruce.
I was just a kid. I was at Ontario Place when I saw Bruce and I will never forget it. everytime I hear this song it takes me back to a wonderful time in my life. Thanks for the music.
Up among the firs where it smells so sweet Or down in the valley where the river used to be I got my mind on eternity Some kind of ecstasy got a hold on me
A man with chronic depression, a man who has it because he sees the world as it is, spends a beautiful morning standing outside of himself and the sublime takes over. Those glimpses of the sublime keep him going
Nice looking guitar. .. The sound is beautiful too. Thanks Bruce for 40 years of music. I first heard you when I was a DJ at Radio station. I remember 8t was the Stealing Fire album. Songs like, " Maybe the Poet," "Mary's Kitchen," "Sarah Gold," "If I had a "Rocket Launxher," Lover's in a dangerous rime." You're one of the greats.
Bruce graced the birth of our first born son with this song in Dallas, Texas of June 4th, 1980. I had quit my job, traveled to BGSU to enroll in a special ed. masters program and find a house for our budding family. Poor as we were, I taught a couple years and God led us to the Central Pacific to pursue teaching positions at a boarding school earning $385 a month with our baby girl born just before we left for Kiribati. What a wild journey! Fearless to no end, my wife and I, with God's hand upon our shoulder in faith and prayer, pursued an extravagant dream that has yielded a harvest of good works and fulfillment. "Wondering where the lions are?" That's just your godless self telling you that you need to work at it using your own power and playing it safe. Don't do it! Live extravagantly using God's power in faith and holding him responsible for the fulfillment for which he created you to become and be. That's "some kind of ecstasy" when you trust in His power to guide and lead you. My advise, move over and give God a chance in faith & prayer..."I'm thinking about eternity" and you'll wonder where the lions are even through the failures that we all need to fearlessly over come through faith & trust in His spirit, not yours. --KG
This song has such a beautiful flow to it. Certainly one of his better songs he doesn't fail. The guitar work is so tasteful and the voice still sounds good after all these years. He's a true artist!!

Saw BC in the early '80s in Wellington, NZ. Fortunate enough to chat to him after the show....just a great evening with great music. A concert I will never forget.
That's cool. I heard Stevie play once (with Albert Collins) but this impresses me; basically he was saying that Bruce MIGHT be an even better guitarist than himself, but then that Bruce would probably say there was someone better than HIMself. I don't think Cockburn would say Clapton.
This is funny, I've heard a few names now related to this comment. The main one that I heard was actually when Eddie Van Halen was asked....not sure who it was now, but the bottom line is that Bruce holds an unbelievable amount of respect from some of the greatest musicians
i heard this version on the radio back a year or so ago. But man it makes me feel like i can take on the whole world as long as i have someone to love!

Thank-you, for posting this love it;). Wondering Where the Lions Are. & Yes it's one of many of my fav. ballads. it's in my funeral songs;).As we all need to prepare, especially when you have Heart-Disease.
first song i ever heard of his when i was 5 years old. it was on a compilation album called ROCKIN' THE AIRWAVES. 34 years later, it's still one of my all time favorites. it's an ear to ear grinning song.
Brings a tear to my eye, How good is that!!! And how bad is the music of today? Totally heartless and soulless. I am so glad I am of the generation that knows of this music and the kind of long lasting pleasure it brings. God bless artists like Bruce, we know where the gold standard is.
I'm with ya. There are too many examples, but for me it's "Call It Democracy" and lines like "deification of tyranny by so called "developed" nations', Idolatry of ideology... Who can beat up on the IMF and make it sound cool? Bruce.
Absolutely love this song and it’s been in my favorites folder since the first time I heard it on Acoustic Sunset Cities 97. Used to be such an amazing radio station
I've seen and heard many guitarists in my life...plus I had a career in radio...Bruce is one of the funniest guitarists ever. I love your music...Namaste
