My guess is roughly 80% of the schools are eliminated from contention before the opening kick off of the season. BCS and the current format has aided in concentrating the talent. The 12 team format should be an improvement. I think 16 team would be the sweet spot as long as all conferences are able to be represented. Then do a play in for the remaining wild card spots. But the money train stands in the way of doing whats best for the long term health of the sport.

@@Mike-yq7ce I'm of the opinion that the BCS wasn't the flaw, having the BCS select 2 teams was. This shadow room of conference commissioners and TV execs determining the lineup is infinitly worse than arguing over a computer algorithm imo. The computer should just select 12 or 16 teams

The NFL equivalent of this system is having the NFC east in a contract with Fox and the playoff selection committee. Then we're surprised when they wrangle Cowboys and Eagles into the top spots every year. Also, the NFL going with it and telling all other divisions and teams it is a fair and balanced playoff.

FSU strength of schedule: 50th. Michigan: 47th. Basically the same level, yet one is ranked #1 and the other was dropped out of the playoff. Turns out having a star head coach and rabid alumni and boosters like Rich here are what it really takes to get in. Not wins, not strength of schedule, not... football.

Probably also takes your starting QB and 5th in voting for the Heisman. Otherwise you have a good team, without an offense. Get this straight! Do you or I, as a Bama fan, think that without Milroe we are just as good? Yes after the second game of the season, when I thought he was real bad, but now, he ended up 6th for the Heisman voting. So put it to rest, play Georgia, and I hope you do, since your University is talking about sitting it out. I hope the Committee sees that and decides, guess what , we would not let a spoiled child play in the sandbox, I know we got it right. Can you imagine this crap coming out of Nick Saban and Bama. Turning down a game, our 2 top 4 picks played in the bowl last year to tear apart Kansas St and show the committee they made a mistake. Last year at the end both TCU and Bama had 2 loses, the only problem was that we were much better, as TCU lost by 55 in one game and we lost by 4 points in 2 games on the last play. Our common opponent, K St, was destroyed by Bama, while TCU lost to them.

They should let the FSU's record, being a conference champion and wins against the SEC be the factor. These kids earned it and their opportunity to prove it on the field was stolen from them. Having a good QB is important to most teams. But special teams with elite defenses have won championships. How about the Ravens vs the Giants in the Super Bowl and there's plenty of other examples where this has happened. Otherwise there wouldn't be the saying "defense wins championships". They went with what they think will be a more compelling game. What will people think if they end up beating Georgia led by that stout defense? I guess we'll have to wait and see.

All the crying about FSU is out of hand. There's 4 spots for Power 5 conferences. Obviously, it was inevitable someone was going to get left out at some point with a season like this. Alabama beat the #1 team to win the SEC conference. They've grown every week. They're ranked 5th for strength of schedule. FSU is ranked 55th for the same metric. And, the BIG10 and ACC were the ones that wanted to delay the 12-team format this year, so the ACC have themselves to thank for the position they are in. Deion would not have made a difference. There is no "SEC bias" or it JUST being about money. The SEC is the best conference in college football and has been for decades. We continually have top recruiting, we typically get most of the best players from the portal, and we send the most players to the NFL, especially first-round draft picks. The SEC has 12 collective CFP appearances, not missing a single year. 8 of the last 9 years the SEC has been in the final, 6 out of the last 9 years the SEC has won the National Championship, and 2 of the last 9 years the SEC has represented both teams in the Natty. Alabama has won 3 of 9 CFP-era national titles thus far. The SEC has 30 national titles, the BIG10 has 25 (8 of which come from Michigan pre-1950), the ACC has 15, and the Big 12 has 12. The SEC is objectively the most elite conference in college football. The arguments that there's only "so many good teams"...well half the conference has to lose to the other half of the conference, and everyone knows Vandy keeps the GPA up for the conference. The argument that the ACC was 6-4 or whatever over the SEC is based on primarily the bottom of our conference. Kentucky beat Louisville, which ACC teams call the bottom of our conference. Bama, as a 1-loss SEC team early into a season, which has grown and is a completely different team from that loss, ending a 2.5-year long, 29-game win streak, back-to-back national championship team (also SEC), has more weight than an undefeated inferior conference champ with less notable wins. Everyone wants to talk about the Iron Bowl and the 4th and 31 "fluke". Our boys played 60 minutes of football and won the game, not on a fluke, but on a designed play that is practiced. It wasn't a Hail Mary. It was the Grave Digger. The Iron Bowl is always a close game and is continually one of the most thrilling rivalry games in the country year after year. Auburn was also coming off an embarrassing loss, so we got them with an extra grudge to prove themselves. Did we have some close games this year? Yes we did. But look at the growth of Milroe over the season and the whole team. We went from a team of self-inflicted penalties to a team who put pressure on the #1 team in the country in a matter of 10 weeks that executed like a well-oiled machine, and the growth isn't over. Bama is going to continue to be more dangerous as this team settles into its identity. We haven’t seen everything from Bama yet, the SECCG proved that. Strength of schedule matters. 4 FSU (13-0) Opponents with Winning Records (5 teams, 3 ranked) 5 LSU: 9-3 (best win) Clemson: 8-4 16 Duke: 7-5 Miami: 7-5 14 Louisville: 10-3 Overall Winning Opponent Record: 41-20 (0.672) 38.5% opponents winning teams, or 0.385, a losing schedule. 55th-ranked strength of schedule. 8 Alabama (12-1) Opponents with Winning Records (8 teams, 5 ranked) 11 Texas: 12-1 15 Ole Miss: 10-2 Texas A&M: 7-5 17 Tennessee: 8-4 14 LSU: 9-3 (3rd best win) Kentucky: 7-5 Chattanooga: 8-5 1 Georgia: 12-1 (best win) Overall Winning Opponent Record: 73-26 (0.737) 61.5% opponents winning teams, or 0.615, a winning schedule. 5th-ranked strength of schedule. 7 Texas (12-1) Opponents with Winning Records (7 teams, 5 ranked) 3 Alabama: 12-1 (best win) Wyoming: 8-4 24 Kansas: 8-4 12 Oklahoma: 10-2 23 Kansas State: 8-4 Iowa State: 7-5 16 Oklahoma State: 9-4 Overall Winning Opponent Record: 62-24 (0.721) 53.8% opponents winning teams, or 0.538, a winning schedule. 13th-ranked strength of schedule. 1 Georgia (12-1) Opponents with Winning Records (6 teams, 5 ranked) UT Martin: 8-3 20 Kentucky: 7-5 12 Missouri: 10-2 9 Ole Miss: 10-2 (best win) 18 Tennessee: 8-4 8 Alabama: 12-1 Overall Winning Opponent Record: 55-17 (0.764) 46.2% opponents winning teams, or 0.462, a losing schedule. 37th-ranked strength of schedule. On Liberty…the OTHER 13-0 conference champion. FSU: 36.5 Pts/Game, 8.3 Avg Yds Passing, 4.7 Avg Yds Rushing, 416.3 Yds/Game Liberty: 40.8 Pts/Game, 9.9 Avg Yds Passing, 6.1 Avg Yds Rushing, 514.9 Yds/Game Liberty also went 13-0, is ranked better offensively, and is statistically better on the field. Where’s the outrage that Liberty got snubbed? Should Liberty get in over USF? No? Because quality of wins (strength of schedule) matters so much more than FSU fans and justice warriors want to admit because it doesn’t validate their narrative. The committee got it right. The goal is to get the 4 best teams. Alabama is better than FSU. Texas is better than FSU. Georgia is better than FSU and it will be reflected in the Orange Bowl. The committee made a mess of the rankings all season long. Oregon never should have been ranked higher than Alabama and Texas. Teams performed well all season until the very end. Things didn't just "work themselves out" like the last 9 years where the committee didn't have to make tough decisions or even evaluate anything. It's certainly disheartening for FSU, but if you're honest with yourselves, Alabama and Texas are better teams that deserve to be where they were placed. I'm looking forward to the 12-team format. I've hated 4 teams all along. With that, Roll Tide! Excited to see what we do against Michigan.

If Michigan wins, "College Football" loses, big time. When the NCAA punishes them for the cheating scandal next year... if Michigan has to vacate their title or worse next year (c'mon death penalty), or even just an asterisk... it's a huge loss for the integrity of the game. I stopped watching MLB when the Astros cheated to win the title and the commissioner said something like "who cares who wins? it's just a hunk of metal!" referring to the trophy, and then refused to punish those involved and tried to use it as leverage for a future CBA... it's like, is this even a sport? why do we even play the games then? who cares? It's now the same for college football. Why even bother playing the games? Should've had Alabama jump Texas too, so you could have a Michigan & Alabama "championship" game; get those ratings and sell t-shirts to all the alumni at some packed stadiums.

Yup, we are once again at risk of a split national title because the committee listened to the talking heads on the TV instead of reading their own criteria. The TV says "4 best teams..." and doesn't bother elaborating on those ellipses because it's nuance about "legitimate claims" but the committee is supposed to use that nuance to make their decision! Instead they didn't do the reading and now we're all gonna have to remember yet another team that will have a Natty they didn't get to play for. I don't know where this narrative that it should be the 4 best teams came from. College football is fantastic because every game matters. That's why it has the best regular season of any sport. Even if alabama wins it all and georgia beats fsu by 30, it's still the wrong decision. It robs everyone of the possibility of something magical happening.

What’s the financial analysis problem CFB hasn’t gone to an 8 team playoff? Wouldn’t the other bowl games pay to host quarterfinal games?
@MattLindon-wv8jy
@MattLindon-wv8jy 9 месяцев назад
Actually the 8 team playoff predates the CFB in its entireity - but its a bit of a sore subject because of what happened after this model was rejected....... Spark Notes version - MWC got tired of their undefeated champs not making the title game in the BCS, so they submitted an 8 team playoff in 2009. It was rejected by the P5. So in response several MWC members got their Senators to open a federal investigation into the league. This spiraled into a multi-university class action civil lawsuit + multi-state criminal lawsuit + FBI investigation + Major Anti-Trust Federal Investigation of the league. Though never officially confirmed it would historically make a lot of sense that these actions are what actually led to the CFP, because the NCAA and BCS were staring down the barrel of about $2.5 billion of lawsuits and literally 19 days after the initial trial hearings the CFP was announced. The timing of this announcement was a bit odd considering in the trial hearings under oath in front of the US Senate both BCS and NCAA executives admitted there were no plans for ever making a playoff. It would also explain why the CFP was really rushed as a concept and put together with only 4 teams. This is a very contentious topic that college football media has largely censored completely, but theres literally CSPAN footage of the trial hearings. But you wont find any media today ever talk about this, because a lot of executives were sh!tting themselves from 2009-2012.

I love how Rich and... hot/bad takes co-host guy think Michigan is so much better than FSU. All of the talking heads saying FSU didn't deserve a top-4 spot because their "strength of schedule" is 50th. Michigan wasn't much better, they're 47th. By the committee's logic, Michigan shouldn't be in either, let alone #1, and they should be playing FSU in the consolation bowl instead of Georgia. If it wasn't about TV ratings, rabid boosters & alumni (like Rich), star coaches, and which school has the bigger name; Michigan probably gets left out too (doubly so b/c of the cheating scandal).

@@calvinhobbes6118 Since you brought up last year and say that's impressive.... isn't that actually a negative against Michigan since they lost a banger against TCU in the CFP. And then TCU went on to get crushed by Georgia by like 60 points in the championship game. People are saying TCU was a joke and didn't deserve to be there & that's why FSU was left out this year so they didn't have a repeat of last year.... but everyone seems to conveniently forget that TCU beat Michigan, who therefore was also an undeserving joke last year that was also gifted a spot in the CFP last year simply because they ran an easy schedule and were undefeated?

5:35 Amen...this is maybe the best point Feldman makes here. In watching this team early on (with their incredibly inexperienced crew at QB - Milroe only had one game of starter's experience at that point filling in for Bryce Young last year in an injury scenario), I had trouble even imagining them win the SEC west, let alone beat Georgia. Over time, they won me over by continuing to improve. However, it should also be noted that the defense was the best part of this run. They kept this team in every game, and they even led Texas 16-13 before they went nuts on Bama in the 4th quarter.

Am I the only one NOT butt-hurt by this??? I'm old enough to remember when undefeated BYU was voted national champs, despite playing in the WAC and beating an unranked 6-6 Michigan team in the Holiday Bowl. Meanwhile, 10-1 Washington beat #2 ranked Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl....IMO, both OU and UW were better teams than BYU, and if I wasn't too lazy to look up the final rankings from 1984 I'd probably find a few more teams I'd consider better than BYU that year. Records do NOT tell the whole story....if they did, then why isn't 13-0 Liberty in??? Nevermind, rhetorical question, as NOBODY thinks they are a top-four team (they played exactly zero ranked teams in the regular season, but face Oregon in a bowl; I'm not anticipating Liberty will win....)....but then, neither is FSU....ACC only had three teams in the Top 25, and only one (FSU) in the top 10. 'Bama played 5 ranked teams, including the then-#1 team in the nation, and their only loss was to the current #3 team Texas. I just don't find it an outrageous crime against humanity that 'Bama got in and FSU didn't....and I'm not a 'Bama fan. If Georgia had taken care of business, it would have been 1- UGA, 2- Michigan, 3- Washington, 4-FSU, and Texas fans would be whining.

You been drinking too much of the mass media koolaid, you gotta read the criteria for yourself. It doesn't say "4 Best Teams..." The way Disney always shows it on ESPN, those ellipses are hiding the first level criteria all teams have to meet before they can even be considered. "4 best teams from among those with legitimate claims to participate." They knew that 5 P5 champs don't fit into 4 spots, and dreaded the possibility of 5 undefeateds, which is why that line exists, so they can "eye test" 5 undefeateds. This year we only had 3, who by this standard should have gotten automatic spots. This has always been the way college football works, undefeated P5 teams get a Legitimate Claim to a title shot. It's why ESPN still credits USC with a 2003 title that they didn't play for.
