This looked dated even then ! That's why it failed. ITV's attempt to grab the audience for several hours on Saturday nights was so arrogant and patronising. Viewers didn't want to feel coerced into sitting and watching Bruce's ego being stroked and certainly didn't want to feel like they'd gone out to a variety show by not actually going out. I remember the fuss made about this programme and its consequent cancelling after 13 episodes. It's interesting to realise that Bruce Forsyth's future with ITV continued with a half-hour quiz show called "Play Your Cards Right" - a much more bite-sized entertainment show without giving him too much exposure. It also has to be factored in that at that time, with only three TV channels (BBC 1/ 2 and ITV), a household name leaving the BBC and joining ITV instead was (in Bruce's own words) "like Margaret Thatcher becoming leader of the Labour Party".
