Lyrics:
Well, I came to your house the other day
Your mother said you went away
She said there was nothing that I could have done
There was nothing nobody could say
Me and you, we've known each other ever since we were sixteen
I wished I could have known
I wished I could have called you
Just to say goodbye, Bobby Jean
Now, you hung with me when all the others
Turned away, turned up their nose
We liked the same music, we liked the same bands
We liked the same clothes
We told each other that we were the wildest
The wildest things we'd ever seen
Now I wished you would have told me
I wished I could have talked to you
Just to say goodbye, Bobby Jean
Now, we went walking in the rain,
Talking about the pain that from the world we hid
Now there ain't nobody, nowhere, nohow
Gonna ever understand me the way you did
Maybe you'll be out there on that road somewhere
In some bus or train traveling along
In some motel room there'll be a radio playing
And you'll hear me sing this song
Well, if you do, you'll know I'm thinking of you
And all the miles in between
And I'm just calling you one last time
Not to change your mind, but just to say I miss you, baby
Good luck, goodbye, Bobby Jean

The moment he sings "or just to say I miss you baby, good luck, goodbye, Bobby Jean!" and the saxophone kicks in - it tears me apart EVERY time!

35 years ago this album came out. The year I got my driver's license . The year of my first car. The year of my first love. The year of my first Bruce concert. Needless to say Bruce is the only one still in my life. Lol. Every now and then I'll throw this CD in the player while washing the car in the driveway. Open a cold beer and just listen as the years melt away.

I was eight years old when my father bought the album 'Born in the USA' back in '84. It has this song on it. I remember it resonated deeply with me, i.e. with my ability to feel, for I didn't speak English back then. (I'm from The Netherlands). When I got older I learnt the language, and so I learnt the lyrics of this and many other Springsteen songs. I could now more and more understand what he was singing. And also through life experience of my own. But the truth is, I could grasp the meaning of many of his songs as a child. For the match is perfect. Springsteen has a gift for giving an emotional charge to music, that captures very well the essence of what he sings about.

I was 16. Went to the show at RFK in DC. Hearing these songs and thinking of that time makes me both happy and sad. BITUSA was my first Bruce album and show. Other albums i like more but like my first love this one is very special.

Possibly Bruce's most underrated song. About Steve's departure from the band in 1982. Although it could also be about an old high school sweetheart you had. Music can have multiple meanings. This song is regularly played at Springsteen shows and he cites it as a favorite in his book "Songs."

I ADORE this song, and have asked my family to play it at my funeral. It speaks to those in our past, never forgotten, and although no longer seen, there are those times when we remember the connection, even with all the miles in between. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this song. First time I heard it I was driving on highway 5 coming home to San Francisco from Los Angeles. Stopped and called my sister (on the payphone, no cells yet) to ask if she knew the song. My wife has given me so many wonderful gifts, but the only one better than her love was tickets to this concert. My first Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band concert. It only took 30 years to get there an a whole lotta love. Now I'm the one getting the tickets and taking her to Hyde Park next July for the experience of a lifetime. Besides falling in love and being loved, the next best thing is a Bruce Springsteen concert.

I'd like to believe the song was written for Steve Van Zandt from the e-street band who left him 1984 to go solo. Have a look at these lyrics: "Now you hung with me when all the others turned away, turned up their nose/ We liked the same music, we liked the same bands, we liked the same clothes".

Or at the very least a certain understanding/recognition between the two of them . I just saw the band live 3 days ago and this song was the 3rd one of the first encore . I was watching Bruce and Stevie for some sign but alas , it was not to be . What a fantastic concert though ! I’ve been a fan since they broke out on the scene 49 years ago and this was the first time I got to see them live ! Something I’ve always wanted to do and now I have ! ! ! Keep on kicking it in the ass Bruce ! ( and the E Street Band ) . 3 hours and 5 minutes long of nonstop jammin’ ! 29 songs , most of my favorites and one with my name in the first line ! Thanks to my daughter I got to see it !

I wanted to try to see them in Nov. of ‘23 but Bruce became ill and had to cancel those shows , so I didn’t try to get tickets . By sheer coincidence , my daughter and her husband got 2 sets , only needed one , and I bought the other tickets from them . He is supposed to come back in Aug. ‘24 and I’m waiting anxiously ! I’ve seen most of the truly great rock and roll bands that I wanted to but never got to see Bruce . I hope we both make it till then ! It’ll be wild , the wildest thing I’ve ever seen ! Hey jake… met you at a outdoor show ( can’t recall offhand where at the moment) bought your CD.. love it. You signed my CD and I was impressed that you knew how to spell my name … you said it was the name of your favorite aunt! You are awesome !! Hope to see you again!

One of best songs by The Boss, imho. And what to say about the sax solo at the end! Goosebumps! Looking forward to hearing this gem at the concert in Belgium in a few weeks.

Jake! Jake! Jake! How many times did i have to call you? That, was one momentous moment. For those that might not fully understand this; the ability to uphold breathe that much and yet maintaining the rhythm of the song is just staggering! Only a band player can know this. He simply made it seem so easy. I will always remember this as my best saxophone musical act. Thank you Jake!

I seen jake on first tour with the band .. some cities didn't get " jungleland " played but us Anaheim attendees did.. all night jake was on point..but on Jungleland you could feel Clarence .. not a dry eye and all of us pointing up.. it was beautiful and Jake blew the Roof off!.. I will never forget.. ps first Bruce show was river tour Halloween night 4 hours!!.. since then 12 times😁😁👍👍

The song is about Lil Steven leaving the E St Band in the 80's. It works on so many levels though!
