It’s one of the most beautifully written albums of all time. It’s like Springsteen wanted people to really listen to him. The River was a huge success and maybe he knew that Born in the USA would be a smash hit too. And Nebraska was a stark record. Unfortunately it’s like people didn’t actually listen to what he had to say.

The Ghost of Tom Joad Album is another great stripped down record focused on lyrical content. Bruces music spans genres and provides a great sountrack through life. Enjoy, keep posting, loving the Springsteen reactions.

He does a beautiful version of this on Live In NY City.... Danny on accordion, Nils on pedal steel, Patti on harmony vocals.

To me, years later after it's release, this has become the most interesting song on the album. Bruce had his biggest commercial success with his previous album The River and his first top 10 hit single Hungry Heart. This song is almost the process of changing from the guy that admired the mansion from the outside to the guy that lived in it.

Great that you're focusing on this album. Most reviewers don't. What will be interesting after Nebraska, is to dive into his variety of styles, from the wordy, Dylanesque first album, the jazzier second, the big breakout of Thunder Road, Born to Run and Jungleland, then later songs that began like these Nebraska songs but did get flashed out full band, like Born in the USA

Bruce has a whole live album of acoustic folk music, Seeger session band live in Dublin including Highway Patrolman which is on the Nebraska album and was covered by Johnny Cash

Springsteen dropped this when I was 15. I bought the album because of "Atlantic City", but I wasn't sure what to make of the other songs back then. Not only were they a major sonic departure from his previous album, The River, but they were also unlike anything else on the rock and pop charts in 1982. No synthesizers or spiky hair! [grin] Springsteen dropped his Born in the USA album after this one and more or less became a superstar as a result. In hindsight that makes Nebraska something like the deep breath one takes before jumping off the high dive into the deep end of the pool. Compare the raw emotions of Nebraska with the golden era rock and roll overtones of "The Fever" -- a studio outtake from 1973 available on his RU-vid channel. He would sometimes play it in his legendary concerts. And while you're visiting his channel be sure to check out the clips of some of those too. A great place to start there are the shows from "Thrill Hill Vault 1976-1978" -- dig the transition from the introduction into the heart of "Prove It All Night" from his 1978 show in Phoenix, Arizona. Killer! "Prove It All Night" (Phoenix, 78) (from Thrill Hill Vault 1976-1978) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-okrvOAUg-yY.html

I’m really enjoying your enjoyment of this incredible album. I found it at 13 years old and it gave a story to many of my deep seated and confused feelings of my teenage self. It was an album that spoke to the darkness behind my smile! Great job brother!

I can't decide if this is total Springsteen or totally not Springsteen, ballad heavy but not something I would expect from him, he's always that antihero, peel away the layers and keep getting surprised! I must say this is one I absolutely love, going to give it another listen, anyway, I gotta stop overthinking him and just enjoy I guess, as always thank you for the video and commentary we appreciate you and the work you do

Also, if not familiar with a current artist I highly recommend Jason Isbell. Country/Americana with amazing lyrics.

This is very autobiographical of Bruce. It really happened. His dad used to take the kids and do this. The vocal sound was accidental and they couldn't reproduce it which is one reason this was released as is. He mixed it down to a boom box that had quit working when it got wet, but then came back to life. They didn't clean the heads or anything. Not something recommended by experts! But he was just making a demo.

There's an achingly beautiful full band version of this on the 'Live in NYC' DVD featuring the late, great Danny Federici on accordion. Watch it here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nccjJ3GUI5U.html And of course there's Emmylou's version: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Cd2X7KKCiLg.html

Since you like Bruce’s ballads, look for The Ghost of Tom Joad, from the album of the same name. Listen to the album version first, then the live version with Tom Morello and the E Street Band. I was amazed.
