My first love died in Nam...I was 17 and he was 19. To this day I see him in my dreams and feel his kiss. I'm 70 now and the day goes on...Thank you Bruce for this touching tribute to our fallen brothers and sisters. ^i^
How moving.. This is a man carrying his humanity around the stage night after night and never losing touch with his past, his story, his roots. What a greatness, Bruce. I will love you forever.
I am a former British Soldier. Now in my 50's I find myself reflecting more and more on the 22 years I served and of things I saw and can't unsee. I lost good friends serving; I have lost more to suicide since leaving. Family and newer friends think I'm something special for serving but I know it is all just tears and rain and I am far from the man they perceive me to be but I cannot regret my life as I think that would finish me too... Bruce; you have touched me deeply with your words and although you have forced me to travel back to places I would rather not visit right now, the once proud man in me knows I should not forget. Thank you.
I'm no american, I have luckily never lost someone at war, but every time I listen to this beautiful song, the lyrics... Damn they give me those shivers and bring tears to my eyes I think about those families that sent their boys away, in a war many of them didn't want. And this version, you can feel how tough it is for Bruce to dwell on his past and think about his fallen friends This is truelly a masterpiece
What a heart felt tribute to our Veterans! As i voted last Tuesday, i said a prayer thanking our service man and women for fighting for this country! So that i am able to vote openly and freely! Tks! God bless! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Wow. That voice crack at 6:23...really shows what kind of man Bruce is. I've seen him in concert 4 times, and each time is a whole new experience. He shows us that it's okay for anyone to cry and for anyone to be proud of their country. Thank you, Bruce.
Thank you sir for this song. It brought tears, not only for my young cousin who went to Vietnam, but also for others who sacrificed so much. Sacrifices unacknowledged and unappreciated for so long. I can still see that young man in my mind. Words really can not convey how much I feel for this song. Thank you.
Been in another war in another country. This hit home so bad. Had me in tears. The Boss is The Boss From another place, another country, another state of Grace.
this amazes me, how he always tells stories with his eyes closed....traveling in time, accessing his memory, respecting the thought, being there...time traveling in essence... not looking for confirmation.....
Now I know what he was talking about. The war is just outside the border and I feel his fears, the tension and the loss in his youth. I'm far from it, yet so close.
When "Born in the USA" became a monster seller, I was actually a little pissed off. Because Bruce wasn't just 'mine' anymore. Every damn teenybopper was jumping on the bandwagon.
+Two-tone Blue I was one of them to jump on that train. But Bruce made me see the light... with Born in the USA. Nowadays bitu is just a notice, and gems like Jungleland, Backstreets, Independence Day and this song mean the true Bruce to me...
This is the man, the voice of both Reason and Compassion, the U.S. needs in this moment in time! "Please may his music reach the masses to heal hearts and to heal minds".💙💙This is my prayer! 💙💙 Bruce Springsteen is a national hero!
Every time I listen to this song my eyes tear, and it reminds me of all those friends I lost during the war in Lebanon, there are many walls there and Unfortunately, It is happening again now in Gaza, Palestine... let us admit that we have fallen as humans...
Everything he does is with class and regards to human life he leaves NO stone unturned when giving credit to soldiers and or even his fans. I CANNOT imagine my life with out you Bruce for the last 35 yrs because of you I am the person that I am. Thank You from the depth of my soul.
Bruce is AWESOME! I think all of his fans feel like he is just "one of us" yet still highly respect his genius way of telling our stories. Our species rarely generates someone so talented and humble.
I wrote this about 25 years ago when I went to the Vietnam War Memorial for the first time and saw a friend's name on the Wall. Can't seem to stop thinking about that time today. So thought I'd share. On The Wall 1969 Her heart skipped a beat, There he was Standing in line, She watched, as she always had. He laughed with the guys, trading lunches, Trading stories Stories of what would be after graduation Stories of getting out of this town Stories of a country too far away to understand. But she'd be here another three years, Waiting, as she always had For the boy next door Who called her little girl. Someday, he'd be back, he'd see the little girl had grown. He'd feel what she had always known How could he not? She watched as they said goodbye To this boy in a soldier's uniform. Kisses, hugs, pats on the back, Fathers' memories of years before When they went off to another war. See you little girl See you little girl Will forever play in her ear. 1989 So many years gone by So many names Her heart skipped a beat There he was His name On the Wall.
This song brings tears to my eyes for all of the fallen. Anyone who likes it should check out his version from Albany 2014. Similar opening talk, with a few different details, and after he goes into Born in the USA. The two songs together tell the full story. They feed and build on each other's power.
He was on the cover of Time and Newsweek before owning a car or even learning to drive. He was broke till he was 34 and Born in the USA became a hit album. I read an article from 1974 where in order to meet with David Bowie (when Bowie was recording one of Bruces songs) he hitchhiked in to Asbury Park to take a Trailways bus to Philadelphia.
+Brian vaccaro sorry for your loss im anti-war but pro-veteran. This country is doing what they are good at - sell u patriotism, capitalize on your economic circumstances etc. Then treat you like Vietnam Vets-ignore your physical, psychological and any effect. God bless
Bruce never forgets his roots, where he came from and the people and memories that helped him along his journey, its one thing ive always liked about Bruce ...
When I saw that glimmer of a tear in Bruce's eye towards the end I lost it. A mournful yet beautiful homage to Bart Haines and Walter Shoshone. Bless our military at home and deployed. And especially those on THE WALL.
Thank you for this...for Devils and Dust...for the Rising. For all of it. We love you. Your music helped me through all my time in Afghanistan and now back in new york city tryin to make it.
This blows me away. I served right after Viet Nam on Okinawa in 76. They had a wing in the Hospital for Veterans from the War not ready to go home... When stationed on the East Coast used to go up to the Wall hang out with the Vets take pics. and just talk...
Hi Bruce, i really trust we are a friends that haven´t been introduced. When listen your song i´m sure we are "blood brothers", i have been deeply sad when you wrote "Cautious man", or compromised when you sang "Two faces" sometimes i think you are an old soul a person who has lived for many centuries. I´m sure many man (cause i think mainly write for men) have whispered their´s most intimate dreams, fears and dreams. Thanks friend for being the one who can tell what it´s difficult for us to say. Thanks Bruce for be the brother that i would have to have. Thanks friend for being you
For the last couple of years I've been slipping into his post 9/11 material. I'm a proper fan of his 70's output really. Not sure if this tune from High Hopes was new or written previous but it made me cry! Not many songs have that effect on me, Springsteen really is something else when he turns it on. Simply beautiful. We should always remember the best times from our yesterdays 😎
Great song ! Emotions when Bruce talks about his friend the drummer of his first band...lost in Vietnam! This is the song against war and wasted life...who died in the wars are young poor and innocent boys and girls....😢
That's why he's THE BOSS with a big heart and also a very humble human being. God bless all the men and women who have died for freedom. God blessed every family who lost a dear one fighting for FREEDOM, DEMOCRACY AND HUMAN RIGHTS. God bless the United States of America!!!! Amen !
I am leaving The River's new sequence of songs on the video of my favorite song from Bruce's most recent album in 2014. For my version of The River, the album has been expanded by two songs (22 now!), and I have updated the release date to Tuesday, September 23, 1980. This date allows time for the band to finish their rehearsals for the tour that would still begin on October 3 in Ann Arbor; this is also Bruce's 31st birthday with the gift to himself of a #1 album that kicks his friend Jackson Browne's Hold Out album out of the top slot. Here is The River revised: 1. The Ties That Bind (Take 8, original lyrics in chorus) 2. Loose Ends (Take 2, 07/18/1979, Ties That Bind album) 3. Jackson Cage (The River album) 4. Two Hearts (The River album) 5. Independence Day (The River album) 6. Where the Bands Are (10/09/1979, Tracks) 7. Hungry Heart (The River album) 8. Out in the Street (The River album) 9. Sherry Darling (The River album) 10. From Small Things, (1979, Essential, disc 3) 11. The River (The River album) 12. Take 'Em As They Come (04/10/1980, Tracks) 13. Be True (07/21/1979, Tracks) 14. Ricky Wants a Man of Her Own (07/16/1979, Tracks) 15. Price You Pay (1st Take, 09/25/1979, original lyrics) 16. I Wanna Be With You (05/31/1979, Tracks) 17. Stolen Car (3rd Take, 07/26/1979, Tracks) 18. Roulette (04/03/1979, Tracks) 19. Cadillac Ranch (The River album) 20. I'm a Rocker (The River album) 21. Restless Nights (04/11/1980, Tracks) 22. Wreck On the Highway (The River album)
This just hit me watching this today, Bruce is calling out two the Cichon brothers as a survivor, he made at as a big rock star and these guys probably would have never guessed that 50 years later...
Wow great, great performance..this was heart touching for me..my Vietnam vet lost both legs and full of metal fragments. He walks on two prosthetic legs..does great on them..peace and love to you all, Joanne
Despite success unmatched over 40+ yrs., he hasn't forgotten where he came from. Another example of his mastery that puts him in a class above the rest. Pray he lives past 100.
I was at this show and had forgotten about this. It's best remembered as one of those crazy fun Saturday night Bruce concerts but it had nice quieter moments like this. Thanks for sharing.
