Lyrics:
The screen door slams, Mary's dress waves
Like a vision she dances across the porch as the radio plays
Roy Orbison singing for the lonely
Hey, that's me and I want you only
Don't turn me home again, I just can't face myself alone again
Don't run back inside, darling, you know just what I'm here for
So you're scared and you're thinking that maybe we ain't that young anymore
Show a little faith, there's magic in the night
You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright
Oh, and that's alright with me
You can hide 'neath your covers and study your pain
Make crosses from your lovers, throw roses in the rain
Waste your summer praying in vain
For a savior to rise from these streets
Well now, I ain't no hero, that's understood
All the redemption I can offer, girl, is beneath this dirty hood
With a chance to make it good somehow
Hey, what else can we do now?
Except roll down the window and let the wind blow back your hair
Well, the night's busting open, these two lanes will take us anywhere
We got one last chance to make it real
To trade in these wings on some wheels
Climb in back, heaven's waiting on down the tracks
Oh oh, come take my hand
We're riding out tonight to case the promised land
Oh oh oh oh, Thunder Road
Oh, Thunder Road, oh, Thunder Road
Lying out there like a killer in the sun
Hey, I know it's late, we can make it if we run
Oh oh oh oh, Thunder Road
Sit tight, take hold, Thunder Road
Well, I got this guitar and I learned how to make it talk
And my car's out back if you're ready to take that long walk
From your front porch to my front seat
The door's open but the ride ain't free
And I know you're lonely for words that I ain't spoken
But tonight we'll be free, all the promises'll be broken
There were ghosts in the eyes of all the boys you sent away
They haunt this dusty beach road in the skeleton frames of burned-out Chevrolets
They scream your name at night in the street
Your graduation gown lies in rags at their feet
And in the lonely cool before dawn
You hear their engines rolling on
But when you get to the porch, they're gone on the wind
So Mary, climb in
It's a town full of losers, I'm pulling out of here to win

My HISTORY of Asbury! I felt it was my home since I was 15. (I'm 65 YIKES) I hung out on the boardwalk. I knew everyone who worked the rides on the bw, casino and the Palace (I have a piece of the wreckage, demolishing it was a very sad time for me & many) I got on any ride I wanted for free. I walked to Asbury everyday. From 5th Ave in Bradley Beach through Ocean Grove over that little bridge where Asbury is. I worked at the casino and convention hall coffee shops (both on opposite sides of Asburys boardwalk) till I was 22! Crazy. When I was 18, I got to know the owners of the whole block from 1st Ave to 2nd Avenue (Golddigger, Mrs. Jay's, and the Stone Pony) I knew a ton of people, at the Goldigger, I was hired as a bookkeeper by Chuck (rip), Harry (manager @ Mrs. Jay's,) I visited Mrs. Jay's often, i would love to hear Harry play the guitar and sing Jimmy Buffet (JB RIP) and I hung out with some friends (to hear Max play) at the Pony, in the 70s when Butch & Jack owned it. no place had cover charges except on the weekend (maybe 2.00) the first time I saw Springsteen was when I was 16 at the Monmouth Arts Center (Count Basey now) I sat upstairs where all the old couches were. It was actually suppose to be a Southside Johnny concert! Southside had strept throat we were told just before Bruce made his entrance sliding more than halfway across the stage on his KNEES! Ronnie Spector came out to do the concert for Southside with Bruce. I had a copy of the white album, and I drew in pen & ink the front cover after the concert. Bruce is a PERFORMER like no other. One night I was at the Golddigger, and a bunch of girls' came storming in, "where's JO" (that's me! Lol) they said, " come on, come with us..." all out of breathlike. So, they prodded me along until we came to the Pony, and literally threw me in. The Bouncer gave me one of those little blue cards (get in free cards) and handed me a pen. I HAD NO IDEA what any of this was about! He just kept nodding his head in the direction of the one bar to the left of the door. I hadn't a clue...but there was a newly shaven Bruce Sprinsteen (I never saw him without a beard or offstage) SO, I timidly walked over to this clean shaven Bruce, with a pack of cigs rolled up in his t-shirt(& a huge body guard next to him) and I couldn't EVEN LOOK AT HIM, but I remember like yesterday. I was shaking! And i tiptoed over and then very shyly whispered, "could I have your autograph." He signed the card and gave it back to me. No word came from his lips, but it didn't matter to me. This was before any new stuff came out, I use to listen to him with my headphones (the white album) my dad would ask me, "who u listening to?" I told him, and still he calls him Spruce Grunsteen! Just to make fun of me, of course, and I said, "watch DAD, someday the WORLD would know him." I was RIGHT, who knew! I DID! Fast forward, I kept that card with me ALL THE TIME, until one day, I was working at Convention Hall coffee shop, and running snacks and drinks to the pretty new duo show of Hulk Hogan & Randy Savage wrestling opponents. They would yell to the crowd, "BUY SOME STUFF FROM THAT "PRETTY" GIRL!" YIKES! I never thought of myself as pretty! Haha. When I came back to the coffee shop, their were 2 police officers there. I was a little surprised, so when I asked why they were there, I was told one of the cooks left the back door open where all our handbags were. I panicked...I had 350.00 in the purse and my Stone Pony card with Bruce's signature...all gone. I didn't care about the money, just that card. I won't ever forget the day I met him and i was so sorrowful because I lost a piece of my own history. The police found our purses, they washed up on the shore, but nothing was in any of them. I felt like I lost it twice! The boardwalk was all boarded up soon after and in 2008, I was invited to the casino to do zombie makeup. Every year more & more people came and I would like to think I had a small part in putting Asbury back on the map. We won 2 Guinness worldbook records for having over 10,000 people on the same Asbury Park bw I missed so much! My HOMETOWN, like Freehold is Bruce's, BUT I KNOW HE LOVED ASBURY JUST LIKE MYSELF & MANY. ❤ Love & Blessings to ALL, JOANNE.

I've always thought of the song Thunder Road as being like a sequel to Born to Run. To me Born to Run was about teenagers who are getting to that age when their town starts to seem a little too small for them and they know they need to get out, go somewhere and do something to get more out of life. They don't know where to go, or what to do, but they know they need to get out. Thunder Road, to me seems like two people who were perhaps high school sweethearts getting together again. They are older, have had failed relationships, perhaps failed marriages, but Mary's old high school sweetheart is back at her door with his dusty old muscle car, and they have a chance to regain the feeling they head when they were younger and maybe a little more naive. They know those feelings won't last, but they can still get away and escape with each other for at least one night.
@Luca-zv4ns
@Luca-zv4ns 3 года назад
I think the same about the old high school sweethearts. Lines like “maybe we ain’t that young anymore” makes it sound like they grew up together and found each other again after ageing, and “we’ve got one last chance to make it real” sounds like they can’t leave and rekindle when they’re older like you could at 15-18, this is their final shot. “You ain’t a beauty but hey you’re alright” sounds like they use to joke a lot and be close OR he’s saying she’s aged a few years and isn’t the looker she was in late teens (also in a humorous tone). Beautiful interpretation by you, reflects growing up and realising the inevitability of time, wanting to grow up an get out then somewhat regretting letting it happen so fast.

Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, John Mellencamp, Jackson Brown, Bob Seger. All use music to tell amazing stories about life in America, but they resonate everywhere. I’m sure there are others (please feel free to add to my list), but I can’t think of any others that do it as well as they do. They paint a picture with their lyrics. To me Thunder Road carried on the same theme as many of his songs do, that often, things in your life don't work out as planned and if you want to have a better life, you are the one who has to make that change. From the broken dreams the wife in Racing in the street to the changes in life from THE RIVER, Thunder Road just always gave me a vision of a young woman who had hopes and dreams coming out of high school that never materialized (your graduation dress...) but there is hope, if you just come with me, we will leave this place and maybe live a better life. I had a convertible and would play his live cd as I headed to the Eastern Sierras to go hiking and would drive over passes just under 10,000 feet in elevation, on the side of the Sierra's with very little development, so, no lights. The wind would indeed blow back my hair as I drove under a billion stars that just can't be seen in a city and the warm air and smell of sagebrush are all now embedded in my mind with Springsteen and especially Thunder Road And it got me thinking, what was the real purpose of my life and how do I make a difference? So, I went back to school, to become a first responder and hopefully, every so often, I could make a positive difference in somebody's day. I am much older now, hair is gone, convertible too, I have retired and I can't hike 14,000 foot mountains and my kids are nearly all grown. But I still take motorcycle rides to the Eastern Sierra's or take the kids on more gentle hikes around there and I point out some of the peaks that dad has hiked to. My kids say they miss me singing "those songs" in the car to them and I say, you mean "Springsteen" (ya, I do a pretty good impression, I can carry a tune) and they ask if I have any albums, so I gave them to the kids. I hope they too find some meaning to life and the joy of his music. And if things are not working out, get in their car and leave, for it's a town full of losers....

May I suggest listening to Wings for Wheels, live at the Main Point (2/5/1975)? There's also an outtake from Born to Run called Walking in the Street (Lovers in the Cold) which is basically the outro of Thunder Road crossed with the story of Meeting Across the River. Both are excellent to see Bruce's process at work, he kept refining until he got the album down to those 8 tracks.

I was one of the ones who didn't understand the musical structure of this song (granted, I was maybe 12). I could not get it at first, and it seemed like I never would. I still remember the moment I realized, whoa, this rhymes with that? And this long multisyllabic passage is structured the same as THAT multisyllabic passage? And it fits together, symmetrically and soundly? "The skeleton frames of burned-out Chevrolets" reminded me of abandoned/stripped cars I'd seen along New Jersey roads as a kid. Unbelievable.

So nice how Bruce tells this story. I accepted the invitation many years ago, to listen to your songs and learn from you. As a musician and as a person.

This is exactly why there is only one Bruce. The thematic elements in modern songs are a thing of the past. No one writes an opus like this anymore. Such a shame actually that a song today cannot transform me to a time, a place, a feeling, an emotion or a headspace of imagination. Last of the poets he is.

Im just going to tell my story. I miss my Dad, he was a big part of me wanting to share Music and getting me into the scene. I remember me my dad and mom breaking into the V.I.P section to see Bruce Springsteen at the Casino in New York and they didn't ask to see our tickets and the security guys like you have V.I.P. I said no. Security was like right this way. Im like where? Haha..then went to leave the V.I.P, watched bruce Springsteen on stage for free and he played Thunder road as we left. It was amazing. My dad was amazing at guitar. It won't ever be the same without him.

For me it was “it’s a town full of losers and I’m pulling outta here to win”. For everyone there is a time in life when you face disappointment or adversity and it’s those that can push through it that will be successful.

A true artist. I've been following him his entire career. First saw him on the Born to Run tour, at Oswego College in NY. Must have been 1974. Have seen him several times since.

He explains it as a 'simple invitation', and yet the wealth of emotions just coming out of the words and the song is inexplicable to those who don't feel it in their bones when they hear this song. This song encompasses so much emotion, i guess that is what timeless music is

On the album version it sounds like he says "waves" more than "sways". I just read a recent news story about the lyrics being wrong on his website and other places. I just listened to that part 5 times and heard "waves" the first 3 times and a combination of waves and sways the last 2 times. In the live versions like this you can clearly hear him say "sways".
@jackbronson4242
@jackbronson4242 3 года назад
@@datguitarplayer1656 it’s sways, but the album lyric sheet and even on Bruce’s website it had also said waves. This is supposedly being corrected everywhere as his manager made a statement about it. This is why many people thought it was waves. I have heard Bruce say sways so many times though, and specifically in this storytellers you hear for 100% certainty it’s sways, not waves.
