Bruckner symphonies always seem to evolve from beginning to end as though you're gradually climbing a mountain and eventually reaching a magnificent emotional and spiritual summit.

Jochum. I cannot forget him when we talk about Bruckner. He is still one of the greatest masters of Bruckner whom he loved and perfectly understood.

My favorite among Bruckner's symphonies: the fugue in the final movement is monumental, and so full of passion.

I came late to Bruckner. Thank you for this. From what i've read, if you're just coming to Bruckner, Jochum is the guy.

There are many superb versions of the 5th but this has the most 'swing'. The orchestral tone is sumptuous and gorgeous, the rhythmic line buoyant and dancing. Jochum's later version with the Dresdeners is straitlaced and square by comparison. The Amsterdamers are not just a well-drilled band going through their paces, They sound magically, excitingly inspired. As we arrive at the Coda to the Finale the roof comes off the Ottobeuren Abbey. But it's not a raucous sound, it's a moment of thrilling consummation unparalleled in Bruckner recordings. This is an enormously emotional performance full of heavenly joy, ecstatic fulfilment, vibrant excitement and heart's love through and through.

Eugen Jochum lived and breathed this work. I think he understood it better than any other conductor.

34.20 onwards Movt 2 is joyful and emotionally ecstatic. I was listening to this wonderful symphony whilst walking in a beautiful part of the West Coast of Scotland. The combination of the scenery and the music of Bruckner created one of the most beautiful and memorable experiences of my life. It was similar to hearing the Adagietto from Mahler's 5th Symphony. Once heard never forgotten.

It is the most beautiful gift before Christmas ..... stops my breath of excitement with such an interpretation, especially as a conductor, Furtwangler who founded with his wife (very beautiful) a Bruckner club, one of my favorites !!! Oh my God! Bruckner composed, after 50 years, nine epochal symphonies ... Viennese being, connoisseur and admirer of Wagner, another beloved !!! Organist as a band, Brucker made his orchestra sound like an organ! He knows how to move from whispers to the most terrible feelings! And the conductor and orchestra proposed by you, my dear ones, know and fall into them. Excellent sound and acoustics: at Bruckner it is important and acoustic, because few have dared to interpret it. You are fantastic!

Best version ever.

Takeshi Nakano, a music producer from Japan, recalled an incident at the time when this LP was released for the first time. The members(10 plus several, he says) of Concertgebouw Orchestra and he himself were listening to this perfomance in a room. When the 1st movement began, the members looked at each other's face, and made wry smiles and seemed to speak out “Baracchi!” or somthing, as the pizzicato in the bass was not in agreement. But when the whole symphony finished, all of them all at once made a big applause to the speaker system. It was very moving, he says.

Wunderschöne und detaillierte live Aufführung dieser großartigen und ein bisschen wagnerhaften Sinfonie mit gut phrasierten und perfekt vereinigten Tönen aller Instrumente. Der zweite Satz klingt besonders schön und fast himmlisch. Der intelligente Maestro dirigiert das ausgezeichnete Orchester im relativ langsamen Tempo und mit sorgfältig kontrollierter Dynamik. Bestimmt eine der zehn besten Aufführungen dieses Werks im 20. Jahrhundert!

Cette interprétation de la 5ème de Bruckner est une des belles sinon la plus belle, en tout cas la plus émouvante. L’adagio est magnifique de recueillement et Jochum est le seul pour moi à donner au passage de quelques minutes à partir de 34´30 un legato aussi sublime : on est proche de Dieu.

This is wonderful. The 4th, 7th, and 8th symphonies are usually regarded as the best, and certainly more popular, but this one is enigmatic and thus interesting. What does the first movement mean? We find out in the last movement. I've always been a Bruckner/Skrowaczewski fan, but this is really great, too.

I have my different go to conductors for particular symphonies. Haitink can't be beat for almost all of them. Jochum is another of Anton's faithful one can't go wrong with. But for the 5th, Bruno Walter is the one I like most. His 9th is the best too. The adagio is just sublime . But then, what Bruckner adagio isn't? Amazing how he transforms the themes from one movement to the next. Bruckner likes to toy with us too. There IS humor tossed in here and there. This Scherzo is a perfect example. Then he bombards you!!! Then he lets you chill. Then, BLAM! Another courtly dance, then God only knows what comes down. It does, suddenly. The longing, haunting theme returns to be ingeniously bounced around and transformed into a beautiful creation I can't describe. Now all hell is breaking loose! For a moment. The trumps seem to lead to a prayerful respite. Leading to perhaps the greatest fugue I've ever heard. Certainly the bounciest! A perfect symphony? No. But it's Chuck full of innovation and creativity, as well as Romanticism most beautiful; which Bruckner is abjectly dismissed as not Romantic. Granted, his devotion to God supersedes the normal Romanticism. But it's there nonetheless..

From Wikipedia: Noted Bruckner conductor Eugen Jochum wrote in detail about the symphony's interpretive challenges, noting that, in contrast to the Seventh Symphony, "the climax... is not merely in the last movement but at the very end, in the chorale. ... The first, second and third movements seem almost a... vast preparation. ... The preparatory character applies especially to the first movement [whose] introduction ... is a large-scale foundation... destined to bear the weight of all four movements." As evidence, he detailed the way the introduction's thematic materials function in later movements, and said the interpreter "must direct everything towards the Finale and its ending... and continually keep something in reserve for the conclusion." Jochum also discussed the choice of tempo, and its relationships and modifications, as an element in achieving overall direction and unity throughout the symphony, regarding the quarter notes in the first-movement introduction as "the fundamental tempo". Also, he wrote that in the Finale's double fugue, "it is not enough to bring out themes as such [because] subsidiary parts would be too loud." To get the desired contrapuntal clarity, he detailed dynamic subtleties required. Jochum ascribed elements of Bruckner's orchestration, as well as his precise indications of articulation, to his familiarity with the organ.

Parmi la vingtaine d'enregistrements que j'ai auscultés (voir liste : enmotdiese.free.fr/a_audiotheque.htm#bruckner_5) celui de Jochum 1964 me paraît en effet de loin le plus abouti : tension, tenue des lignes, transparence, orchestre gorgé de sève et armé d'arêtes...

It took decades, but I FINALLY came to love this symphony. I've long considered the 8th his greatest. The 5th could've been Bruckner's greatest, with some rewriting. It is unnecessary long. Nonetheless,fulfilling.

I know people who are not into classical music at all but stop-repeat the finale over and over again. This sequence of music makes you believe in god.

Splendide , merveilleuse et pénétrante interprétation qui avec celle de Celibidach atteint un sommet rarement atteint par sa profondeur, toutefois plus intellectuelle que spirituelle, dont on se gardera de dire qu'elle est insurpassable pour ne pas insulter l'avenir.En tout cas une date magique par son intériorité dans l'interprétation brucknérienne de la V ème.

Bizarrerie affectant cet enregistrement : à t = 11mn + 10s j'entends très distinctement sur ma chaîne audio comme une sonnerie de téléphone - qui dure 1 s - et ce sur le canal de gauche. C'est tellement réaliste que j'ai effectivement d'abord cru que cela provenait de mon téléphone. Sur RU-vid via le casque de mon PC, je l'entends aussi mais beaucoup moins distinctement (à mon avis, on ne l'entend pas si on n'est pas mis au courant). Avez-vous une idée de ce que c'est ?

So many conductors fall into the trap to suddenly broaden the tempo at the climax of the Finale. Jochum sadly makes the same mistake. It needs to soar like an eagle, and in order to achieve this one has to keep the pace as Bruckner intended. There is no ritenuto in the score. Listen to Inbal's recording. He gets this right.

The finale is too fast.

L'interprétation de Jochum est légendaire et extraordinaire de puissance. Mais je préfèrerai toujours Celibidache avec l'orchestre philharmonique de Munich, qui mêle puissance et sensibilité à la perfection. Les deux versants d'une montagne : Bruckner !

I'm a Jochum fan, particularly for Bruckner. But this is disjointed in too many parts, and bombastically banal in others. I much prefer THE perfect 5th by Hatink/ Concertgebow,.
