The Bruichladdich Single Malt Scotch Whisky distillery from Islay, Scotland is one of my absolute favourites in the world. I try to find a way to at least try the new whisky releases each year, if not purchase them. I took advantage of the opportunity to try the most recent range of whiskies as part of a Virtual tasting through Kensington Wine Market. These are the most recent releases from Bruichladdich(2022 Range, excluding the Classic Laddie), which arrived in my market in late 2022. It was a really great time and the crew at KWM were awesome hosts as always. I held back just a little bit in each glass so I could give you my first impressions of the Bruichladdich 2022 releases.
First up in this two part Bruichladdich series, I am presenting my "first impressions" on 4 unpeated Bruichladdich Scotch whiskies and I give you my thoughts on them. Those whiskies are:
Bruichladdich Islay Barley 2013
Bruichladdich The organic 2011
Bruichladdich Bere Barley 2012
Bruichladdich Black Art 10.1
Watch the video to find out which of these 4 Bruichladdich Single Malt Scotch Whiskies was my favourite. Thanks once again for checking out the video, can't wait to talk to you all in the comment section. Sláinte, Matt.

I’m a Classic Laddie fan, under rated in my view. Cap score 8.4

I always keep the Classic Laddie around. Certainly one of the best values out there. Cheers Sandy 🥃

Bere barley is awesome. Bought one during the pandemic. Loved it. Went back the next day and bought one for each of my boys and 3 for back up for my cabinet. Mostly gone now Black Art is lovely - a tad pricey - Makes octomore seem inexpensive lol! Still trying to find the port Charlotte here in Ontario. I’ve been looking for 5+ years. It comes in from time to time but I have yet to see it on the shelves Classic Laddie is, well, classic. Great everyday whisky

Sounds like your palate really gets along with Bruichladdich, much like mine. I'm a self admitted Laddie fan boy. Bere Barley is so fascinating, I do find I prefer certain batches to others. And yeah, Black Art makes everything seem like a deal! 😄 If you're having trouble sourcing Octomore consider looking to Alberta. Some stores do ship and it goes on sale semi frequently. Consult your local laws regarding interprovincial liquor shipping and make sure you are in a good spot if you do choose to go that route. Cheers eh! 🥃

Never heard this before…but definitely an apt note and really interesting imagery: “Fruit Leather”
@Hexagonal_Crank
@Hexagonal_Crank Год назад
In case there is any confusion, "fruit leather" doesn't refer to traditional leathery notes, but rather to confectioneries like "Fruit Roll-ups" or any dried sheet of fruit pulp. =)

@@Hexagonal_Crank aahhh …makes sense…although fruit leather is what i will be looking for from now on…not the roll up kind😉

Great rundown of Bruichladdich gems Matt. Bruichladdich has been consistent from limited experience I have had with them. I will forever regret not picking up BlackArt 8.1 a few years ago when it was available at a half the price compared to today's pricing. I've had Bere Barley in the past. They are all great but I agree with your take, the Islay Barley maybe the way to go. Cheers!
@whiskyonthewestcoast
@whiskyonthewestcoast Год назад
Thanks Rohit! Bruichladdich has truly never let me down. That B.A. 8.1 was really wonderful, the earlier B.A. releases now look like a great deal in comparison to the recent pricing(which $750 for a 29 year Islay isn't all that bad, it's just that it is so different from what it was). Funny that we're in agreement on the Islay Barley even though it is the youngest of the bunch. Cheers 🥃

Very helpful, Matt. I can get a hold of the Islay Barley or The Organic from the SAQ. I think I'll pull the trigger on the Islay Barley ... it's also $20 cheaper! 🤪

I hope you wind up enjoying it! I was only aware of the price of the 10.1 when I was recording, but it is interesting that the youngest and least expensive seems to have been the pick. Glad it is $20 less! Cheers 🥃

I took part in the virtual tasting as well and out of the three "barley" series samples, the Islay barley was my favorite. Did not gel with the flavor of the Bere barley. And the Black Art 10.1 is just on a different level. Unfair to compare it to the other three XD
@whiskyonthewestcoast
@whiskyonthewestcoast Год назад
Awesome that you were part of it too, though I'm not surprised. so much of the Canadian Whisky community seems plugged into what's happening at KWM. Speaking of, I better hurry up and order my doorcrasher whiskies. It seems there is a general consensus around the Islay Barley. The Black Art is an entirely different animal for sure. I can still buy the 7.1 and 8.1 locally, so to spend $300 more on the 9.1 or 10.1 doesn't seem worth it.

@@whiskyonthewestcoast I don't need any more whisky, but who can say no to a SALE, son! I picked up the original Ardnamurchan Paul Launois release that's been eyeing me the last little while. I kinda would like the Old Malt Cask Ben Nevis 24, but it's still a little over-priced. Hoping it hits $350 one of these sales. =/
@whiskyonthewestcoast
@whiskyonthewestcoast Год назад
Agreed on not needing more but I'm a weak weak little man 😄 I've been eyeing that same one and the 358 single cask. The last two 20+ year old Ben Nevis I've had were kind blowing. I really enjoyed a SMOS Ben Nevis last year. I think I have a sample of the old malt cask 24 I gotta try.

So you are saying that saltines in whisky comes from storing barrels on Islay...that's interesting. But it's wrong.
@whiskyonthewestcoast
@whiskyonthewestcoast 9 месяцев назад
No, I'm not saying the perception of saltiness comes from aging on Islay, though the way they are stored, dunnage vs palletizing, ect, does impact flavour as I understand it. But back to saltiness. I should go back and listen to see if I do say that because either don't actually know where our perception of "saltiness" comes from in a whisky. However, I do find it interesting that John Campbell in his time as Laphroaig's master distiller noted that the perceived saltiness showed up in the whisky at 7 years of age and tended to disappear at 13 years. Certainly the salt doesn't get added to the whisky, but does the air exchange from oxidative aging impart different scents or flavors if the air is coastal? I think it's an interesting question. 🤔 What do you think? Cheers 🥃

@justwhisky Год назад
Great rundown! Sounds like the BA are just way too expensive now for what you get. I’ll definitely pick up the 2013 IB though . Wonder if they’ll ever release age statements? Where is all their aged stock… doesn’t make any sense. Cheers 🥃
@whiskyonthewestcoast
@whiskyonthewestcoast Год назад
I think they've really enjoyed the flexibility NAS has given them, but some standard age statements would be nice, like a return to the Ten. Interestingly there was a new Bruichladdich 18 year old poured at a festival in Calgary this month, so perhaps we can look forward to that. Apparently it's not bottled yet but I rumours and conjecture abound haha. Cheers 🥃

Hey Patrick! I prefer the Islay Barley. It's a beautifully pretty whisky. Lots to love. The Classic Laddie is good too, much relies on wine casks. I own both as they are different and am happy to have both on the shelf. Still Islay Barley is my favourite. Cheers man
