Let no one be found among you who sacrifices their son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord ; because of these same detestable practices the Lord your God will drive out those nations before you. Deuteronomy 18:10‭-‬12

It's orisha, but there's definitely a lot of similarities in the religions, (mainly the whole unreachable main deity with near endless bounds of "lesser" entities to represent them) Haitian Vodou also has quite a few elements taken directly from orisha and yurubu

I vanquish all evil. I'm that Blackarican bruja straight up from the Yoruba And my ancestors Nigerian; my grandmas was brujas And I come from an island And it's called Puerto Rico It's one of the smallest but it got the most people." OMFG THIS SONG JUST GAVE ME LIFE!
@MyshunoGuy
@MyshunoGuy 4 года назад
The diversity of the African diaspora never ceases to amaze me. For those curious, the language at the beginning of the video is the Lucumí language, which developed primarily in Cuba and other parts of the Caribbean from the West African Yoruba language of Yoruba descendants taken there. It has other linguistic influences like Spanish, but also Bantu (Congo) remnants from Central African peoples the Yoruba people came into contact with. Many of these tribes were enemies in Africa (and in Cuba these included the following peoples: Yoruba, Congo, Takua, Kissi, Calabari/Kalabari, Dahomey/Arará, and Mandinka) but in Cuba they had to unite to collectively survive slavery, so of course it was common for their influences to overlap. That is why the Lucumí language is not purely Yoruba (and it has since become primarily a liturgical language).

Its weird that some Black Women in the comments find the Video and concept of the video so "disturbing and scary" when this is OUR history, there is an essence of accepting Western and Eastern faiths but an actual faith and spiritual culture curated and practised by your ancestors is the thing you find foreign and unacceptable and hard to watch? Its not for everyone but dont let Westernized standards of Spirituality, religion, faith, "Witches" and African Arts allow you to disrespect/discredit a staple and forgotten beautiful part of Black female Power, magic, love, spirituality and history....What she (Princess Nokia) has brought to mainstream and what she is doing with this video is actually trying to show black women where we come from, and if we already knew, she is celebrating it, and removing the stigma of Black Females who are magical and divine and heavily spirited( we are not demonic, you can have positive witches, you can be very energetically sensitive and not be "evil)...You can't hashtag #blackgirlmagic then disrepect actual Black girls who are Magic, in every way. ~Know yourself. This video and the culture she is refrencing is heavy, it aint for everyone, everyone won't get it, but if you do, it is very resonating and powerful.

YenPanda 92 What you’re saying is so beautiful. I’m Wiccan and my faith is a little different but I have so much respect for the deep history and power of the Yoruban witches. Yup. It's the Church did that shit. Keeps everyone so blind we can't see our Roots anymore. I dug into Wicca when I was a teenager because it was the main religion I could see that was Legitimately about celebrating the Love between People, Earth and God, but everyone around me treated it like I was getting into Cannibalism. I'm like y'all this is your Heritage, where all of the Fairy Tales and Folk Wisdom comes from that have been treasured in the West for centuries...How can y'all be Scared of it? (white, btw) The Church has packed peoples heads so full of bullshit and hearts so full of chaos that we, None Of Us, can see Our Own Roots. (growing up in a devout Christian household leaves the same psychological Trauma-Markers (scars) as people get from growing up in an abusive household) But all we can do is keep on Loving strong and loving the Truth, and they'll catch on when their spirit's are ready... Of course, the more artists pushing shit out there like THIS track and THIS artist, the quicker their Spirit's are gonna be ready to get into The Flow Blow Princess Nokia up in Every forum. Revolution requires its Bards!

To the people dissing her. The movie The Craft is cool but these spiritual practices are incredibly diverse in real life. There are green witches, hedge witches, psychic witches, Wiccans, some of us work with deities from the Hellenic or Nordic Pantheon, there is African witchcraft, Hoodoo, Voodoo, shamanism, some witches see and work with the Fae, some of us are into cartomancy (tarot and oracle cards), some read coffee grounds, etc etc etc There's also INCREDIBLY evil shit that messes with people's heads and souls. These sort of attacks are a bitch. Hence, hexes, uncrossings, return to sender, psychic defense, energy cleansing, etc. So, DON'T YOU FUCK WITH MY ENERGY. LOL

In traditional Mexican culture, a CURANDERA and a BRUJA are dissimilar in that the bruja is seen as using spells or magic to harm others, while a CURANDERA uses her powers and knowledge to heal. So theyre basically admitting to being evil. They just assume that most ppl would confuse what they're doing as "GOOD", when in fact they're talking about harming someone else w/ their magic.

I came here from reading an article about how black african women are leaving Christianity and turning to their ancestors traditions with magick. And I agree. I'd rather follow my own belief and having that feeling like I finally belong than being forced to take part in a religion that my mother, my grandmother, and my other relatives think is the right way. @Ezra j thank you. My mom doesn't understand. With her if a religion is serving any gods that is not part of the Christian religion its a no no. But she doesn't realize that some Christians are still serving the god of their faith and are also adding a goddess with it. So they're calling themselves Christian Wiccans, but it will be a huge debate and argument on what religion I rather take part of that'll make me feel wanted. There's just too many rules and expectations for Christianity that I don't want a part of.

Lleylanna Stewart it would be Christian witches as that is a Craft and not a faith. Wicca is a separate religion so that would be like calling themselves a Jewish Hindi or Christian Muslim. I’m Wiccan and I don’t understand Christian witchcraft ( but I support their right to practice ) as their God does not condone any witches...besides himself of course...

The intro in Yoruba: "Kaikaikai yemaya olodo. Kaikaikai assesu o lodo (x2) La di oke, la di oke (x3) Yemaya o lodo aua lodo mio" (x4) Translation: "Take a look at it Yemaya. Take care of them. Get up, get up. Yemaya you are not far from me" Edit: Yemaya or Yemaja one of the Orishas (Afrikan Powers/deities). Yemaya is the Goddess of the Ocean and creation. There are many Yemaya chants, several other languages. There's another similar one and it basically means "Yemaya you are the gush of the ocean and the gush of spring", but that one specifically is not YORUBA. I wanted to pay homage to Princess Nokia's roots by translating from HER ancestral language.

I keep coming back to this song, it's just so fascinating to me as a Yoruba person to see how the traditions of the Yoruba (and other tribes) managed to survive across the transatlantic. Its beautiful to think that despite the horror and tragedy that slavery was, it failed to erase that connection to Africa.

For those saying "she's not even black" or "she hasn't been initiated"... Nigerian people were captured and taken to Cuba to be slaves. Their culture lived on and many of them migrated back to Nigeria in present day YORUBA. The people are of African and Cuban decent. Afro-Cuban or Afro-Latina/o. Her blood is her initiation.

The way it happened for me was the girl who had the event heard me and a coworker of mine talking about rituals and altars and it just so happened she was nearby and does moon circles so invited us.
