What they are doing IS illegal. Making booze and calling yourself Moonshiner is not illegal. These deals where they're selling LARGE quantities to individual buyers for cash money no tax? Pretty sure most of their illegal activity could be summed up as tax evasion, doesn't really sound good to them either but I'm pretty sure that's what this boils down to. Everyone is caught up in the fact that them making the booze and videoing it is legal, but I've watched a few of these and heard them complain about the IRS multiple times...

I'm from NC and most brands run in the $4-$6 range, I met a guy from Australia at a bar once, i let him bum like 2 cigarettes and in return he bought me and my friends drinks all night. He thought I paid $20+ for the pack; he also expected a round of beers (like 5 coors light) to be $100+. I guess inflation is a real motherfucker over there.

@@2fathomsdeeper No, any distillation is illegal under federal law and always will be due to the dangers of methanol. A typical home distiller cannot accurately test for methanol presence without chemical testing. It doesn't matter if it's paid for or not.

@@cup_and_cone Anything that comes off before the still temperature hits 174F is dodgy. I think methanol comes off from 147F. It has a lower boiling point. If methanol is present it will be in this first runoff. That is why distillers discard this first runoff from the still.

@@Isochest The bottom line is the chemistry/methanol hazard and explosive potential of vapors are half of reason why distillation is illegal, while home wine and beer making has actually become legally almost everywhere these last few years. The other half of the equation is risk of resale... you can buy commercial beer and wine for cheaper than you can make it, so there's little risk of illegal sales. Liquor is completely different. You could sell distilled spirits for significantly more than it costs to make, which governments see as a risk.

A lot more risky when you are in a small town that everyone, including the police, knows what everyone drives and which businesses are and aren't legitimate businesses. Your idea would work great in Nashville, Memphis, or Chattanooga. Not so much in Spring City, Grandview, Hoenwald, or Crossville, TN for example.
