Choosing between a brushed and brushless electric motor is not easy in some RC categories. For the scale crawling community, each style motor has its advantages and disadvantages. In this video, John Holmes of HolmesHobbies.com explains the basic differences between Brushed and Brushless motors and their specifc use in radio control crawlers and scale trail rigs. John will discuss features, plus the pros and cons to each type of motor.

Thank you for your (good) presentation. I just went from Nicads to Lipo on a stock brushed set up. My run time went from 20 minutes to 55! Speed controller no prob but stock motor toasty hot. Its a late 90's Losi buggy. ESC rated @ 160amps. Not real sure on type of a motor to run. I'm not racing anymore : )

Brushless is the way to go, if you can justify the initial cost. This especially true with the new mamba x crawler system.

Hi John. I was thinking as a suggestion for a video is maybe to show one of your own 27t TorqueMaster Pro series motors on a stock truck vs an out the box 27t motor. Maybe some low speed comparisons, stalling comparions, hill climb, top speed etc.

Thanx for a great, informative video. I cooked my Titan 21T 550 rr motor in my Traxxas Bronco today. The snow wasn't kind to me today!!! Do you have a recommendation as to what I should replace it with? Any advice will be greatly appreciated, I'm fairly new to the hobby of RCs/crawling Thank You

Snow is a pretty tough load. You could go low cost with a TrailMaster Sport 21t 550. That's what I would do before moving to brushless. For brushless, Mamba X and Puller Pro 540 2200kv is my general favorite.

Thanx for the info. I actually did order the TrailMaster which arrived on Sat. Hopefully I'll have time tonight to solder wires and install. Eventually I'll upgrade. I was told that a TrailMaster 12t 550 was coming out soon. Can you confirm that? Again, Thank you

I have a dual motor brushed setup and I'm looking to upgrade. Would I be able to use 1 brushless and 1 bushed motor in order to get the best of both worlds in low/high-speed efficiency? Or would I be better off to just get 2 brushless when the originals die?
@paultrace3021
@paultrace3021 9 лет назад
The reason I like brushed motors is that they have less parts to consider and finding the currents path is childs play. A person should (in a perfect world) be able to look at electrical apparatus and see exactly what's going on at a glance.

Is there a motor suggestion that can handle a very high gear ratio (large pinion, small spur) so that it doesn't get bogged down on acceleration, and still hits a high top speed? Not looking for it to be quick off the line for racing, just a personal preference.

How does a TorqueMaster 540 27t have the same wheel speed as a CrawlMaster 540 13t?
@HolmesHobbies
@HolmesHobbies 7 лет назад
changing slot and/or pole count can change the turns needed to create a specific Kv. In brushless, a similar example would be trailmaster 3300 is 8.5 wye and Puller Pro Stubby 3300 is 3.5 wye.

Much longer rotor inside the Puller Pro 540. It would be more fair to compare it with a Pro4 HD.

+HolmesHobbies awesome! It's ordered and almost ready to ship (shipping label created) I messed up and ordered it as well as the CC Mmp but I chose the option to solder the bullet connectors onto to the motor leads, but as it turns out, that's only required for the mamba X and it's 6.5mm connections.

I'm sticking with Brushed.... Unless I win the lottery!!! There's NO cheap, GOOD Brushless Systems. My TenShock 1750kv Sensorless 6 Pole 9 Slot and Hobbywing WL10BL120 ESC comes close, but has limitations. My Brushed Systems (especially yours!!), does what I need it to! ..... After 2 Years of great service though, my BR-XL ESC is now cutting out sporadically. Just stops, no lights, no sound, nothing. Then after a while, it starts working, then cuts out again. I'm running your 30 Turn Brushed Handwound TorqueMaster.... What did I Screw Up? I can't even afford to send it to you to take a look. Carmine 🚂 🚙
@HolmesHobbies
@HolmesHobbies 5 лет назад
Hmm, that's a weird one. I would wonder if your battery plug is just needing some love. That's typically where the sporadic power comes from. Especially when deans get wore out. A sidewinder 4 would boost that tenshock back into shape. Startup won't be amazing, but it will be a lot better than the HW.
@CarminesRCTipsandTricks
@CarminesRCTipsandTricks 5 лет назад
I really, REALLY want a Sidewinder 4!!! My tiny Disability Pay says no.... Hopefully at some point. I will STILL Count on my BR-XL to handle my Brushed Duties! Hmmmmm.... Deans Plugs... I've heard of that. I thought that the XT60 Craze was just another "Cool Kids" thing. However, I bought 2 packages of XT60 Plugs last year, and haven't installed one yet. There's one NO cost thing I can try first! 😉👍👍 ..... Right now, I had to install a $17.99 GOOLRC "320 Amp" ESC. It works, in the way that it goes forward and reverse... But that's ALL it does! Thanks John! I'll try the XT60 Plugs.

I have a electric off road racer Dark Impact.......I noticed that when the motor runs, the section between the brush and the contact point sparks vigorously which I don't like. is there a solution .....should I swap it?
@HolmesHobbies
@HolmesHobbies 8 лет назад
+oliver goldsmith Brushed motors normally spark a little. This is what wears the brushes down. You may try adding 6 degrees of timing advance to see if your arcing reduces.

What would be a great motor esc combo for my Axial Wraith Rock Racer that's similar to the stock set up, I like a little crawling, and little trail riding, and I'm happy with the speed the stock set up gives me, I'd like it to be a tad bit faster but dont want to sacrifice the crawling capability the stock set up has. Any advice?

Yes, but we don't recommend it. For brushed motor, a sealed can type like the TrailMaster Sport is best. Brushless, you just gotta clean them out every time so the bearings and stators doesn't rust.

Why is the cost so much greater on a brushless motor?
@johnrobholmes
@johnrobholmes 8 лет назад
Higher cost of laminations, higher magnet costs, more difficulty winding, and lack of stamped parts give the brushless motor a higher minimum price. I do make Puller brushed motors that are of similar quality and price, however.

Roughly how long do brushed motors last in hours? I know there are variables, but giving time in years doesn't help. At least if you're a newbie.
@HolmesHobbies
@HolmesHobbies 3 года назад
Hard ran motors/ overgeared can be 30 minutes. Normal slow crawling 100 to 200 hours easy. Crawlmaster and trailmaster sport 550, we know motors with years and hundreds of miles on them.

@HolmesHobbies
@HolmesHobbies 8 лет назад
this is why sensored systems and brushed systems are favored in crawlers. low speed control is very important!
@gunsandcommissions
@gunsandcommissions 8 лет назад
Also, turn down the "punch" to half or less of full power - it only affects the first little bit of throttle input but won't hurt the overall power of your system whatsoever - but it may help a lot with the cogging Also, minimize any timing on the motor and the esc settings - I find that these two adjustments have been the most beneficial for smoothing low speed useage on non-sensored systems I'm sure Mr. Holmes can add to these thoughts, as he's known far and wide as a man who has legitimate "esc/motor whispering" abilities 👍😎

+T. Wallace I have a sidewinder 3 in my stampede and was hill climbing for fun, with the punch turned down, but boy did it get HOT, after about 5 mins I couldn't even touch it, if I didn't turn it off, it probably would've had a thermal shutdown. now I see why they recommend crawler motors for crawling lol
