Brushless motor from old CD drive to power RC airplane

The idea is to get the stock brushless motor from an old CD/DVD drive to power an RC airplane, let's see if it will work.
It is in fact possible to power a small rc airplane with one of these motors, even without many modifications, but it could work better by changing the windings and magnets for better performance.

I used to do this, back in the day, with great success. What I used to do was... I removed the stator from the metal base & circuit board (& replace it with my own motor mounts); rewound the stator; put two bearings down the center of the stator; re-fit the bell & I'd have a better motor. At one point, I went as far as replacing the magnets (called the "flux ring") inside the bell housing with decent NdFeB magnets. I had used those motors on some indoor foamy planes that I had built from 2008~2011.

This is very interesting. I’m anxiously awaiting to learn about rewinding the motor. I had some students (I teach a STEM RC Aeronautics class), who accidentally used screws that were too long and shorted out the motor. I’ve kept the motor, in hopes of some day learning (and eventually teach my students) how to fix the problem (and learn a little bit about electronics and motors). Could you also possibly go over how to correct/fix a bad/shorted motor? Thank you for creating great content.

Seeing you perform those initial rotational speed tests--with the plastic CD disc, got me thinking/'imagining'... What 'IF'--someone was able to carefully cut-out & relieve the outline of wedges, or 'arc sectors' of a CD disk, in a radial pattern...such that the freed, polycarbonate plastic could be bent/leveraged with heat, into the blades of a fan. Or, more accurately like a turbine/turbofan 'Blisk'? Could several of these be mounted in series on a shaft, with slightly different 'pitch' blades--so that when rotating they pass air like a series of fan compressor blades?

I have some of theses motors. The one you have has a weaker magnetic belt. Look for the grey ones they are stronger. And you can increase the power just by changing the wiring. I saw someone getting about 120 grams of thrust without changing the magnets.

Is using an dvd motor with only 3 copper pillars inside good for rc plane? Its our school project and im designing one that is ultra light , small and sleek the plane was made out of styrofoam with a wingspan of 2 rulers. And abiut 1 ruler fuselage lenght.. im currently making it glide first so that im nit gonna problem the flying when i added the control surfaces and motors..

Hi, you better off buying the proper RC motors since they are not very expensive and you'll save a lot of time.

Keep searching different drives for better motors. I've used many to successfully fly 3 foot flying wings with a 5x4 pusher prop and with very good performance. If you want to use a larger prop, you need to replace the magnets with neodymium and rewind the coils.

i got my motor from blue ray, it's big, on 6s it spins veeeery fast. i wanted to test it on glider, but i blew it with too much load

There are a few thing wrog with your test. Rewinding it is the only way because it is rewinded from the factory for low assumption and low power. You could for example rewind it for a 4 sell. On rcgroups you find how too. the secondly choicing a prop for your motor is a know how that you have to learn. you can not just throw a prop on your plane so you will burn the esc or the motor or all of them together( believe me not a good felling) but I learned many years ago and I am shore you will too :). I used too rewind nearly all my of motors my self

Those windings look pretty good actually; very much like any small airplane motor. The main factor that is preventing this motor from performing as well is the relatively weak ferrite magnets in the bell. BTW, cell count has nothing to do with battery weight. You can get 3S packs that weigh less than 2S.

I would like to try with Hard Drive motors but the one I had is difficult to get the motor from, I'll try to get more old ones to try that.

@@Joyplanes Oh I know! Don't you just hate that? I have also spent much time trying to extract and replace hair dryer motors with brushless to make edfs and often find it's near impossible to disassemble them non-destructively. The few I have succeeded with work beautifully for that purpose though Old HDD's also usually have crazy strong magnets in them which I always try to save. Don't give up and be sure to search youtube for tips and tricks for salvage tips and tricks. ;)

You could try to use that motor on a very simple foamboard plane if you peel the paper off on the foamboard and use carbon fiber reinforcements

Re-wind the copper wire with thicker gauge wire and do a star configuration winding and change the magnets with neodymium magnets that will definitely give you alot of power and definitely wish to see that video.

They often don't have enough poles on the stator to divide evenly by 3. Sometimes you get lucky.

Cuz I see you was using 3s at 850, at 35c zippy xt30 cord battery, so I wondered what is the CD motor for KV's number, do you now, please do lemme know, thank you dude!! Cuz maybe you could do like 100c 850mAh, 3s with xt30 cord battery, maybe you could fly little more longer cuz 35c is pretty low on throttle and pitch for speed power... Awesome footage by the way! 🤙🏼

Take two similar drive engines and mount their stator on a shaft with the prop together. The bell must also easily replaced

I've explored this option and HD motors are generally even smaller. Larger motors can be found in old tape backup drives and they work great.

@@Joyplanes They're shrunk-fit in the drive housing. Remove the platters, place the motor upside down and support the drive housing with something so that the motor axis is free from the underground. Then and use a hammer and a punch to tap on the shaft, driving it out. I liberated a motor from a Western Digital drive this way, yesterday.

@@daviddavids2884 It can be less mass because an electronic print can be lighter than an accu. You are right about the energy. Depends what is needed for the set goal. High currents during shorter times is maybe all you need. Lipo can give high Amps
