In this series I am putting a much more powerful brushless motor in a mobility scooter for drift. The motor from the mobility scooter is then going into a custom drift trike to form a drift squadron!
In this episode I wire up and mount a Motion Dynamics brushed DC speed controller for the drift trike. I then dummy fit the custom rear end and fabricate a custom tig welded motor mount from 6mm steel plate.
In the next episode, I will begin to tidy everything up. 3D printed bespoke parts will be made and a pedal box and brake caliper mount assembly will be fabricated. Hit that sub button to ensure you don't miss it!

Hi gr8 videos. any more videos on the way on this project? I have been trying to make mobility scooters faster with useing as many original part's as possible and as cheap as possible for the past 2 year's I have found that the standard 24v motors can handle 48v for a few minutes at a time and I found this is perfect for drifting as I have fitted my scooters with digital amp and volt meters from eBay I can see that the motor draws 200amps max at 48v but only for about 0.3 of a second and then the amp's drop to under 40a once moving./drifting. the motor can handle it no worries I also have a thermal cutout fitted to the motor to prevent overheating at 75°c I have only tripped it once when thrashing it.😉 My only upgraded parts are volt/amp meter display from eBay 200a 200v. A 200a DC motor speed controller. A 3d printed thumb throttle to use a pot to control the speed And I fitted the biggest wheels tyres I could find and would fit in the body without too much trimming the wheel arches. I ended up using lawn mower wheels and made adapter for fitting them to mobility scooter axel. And the last thing I have done was to fit drum brakes to all 4 wheels and it was an easy job I used brake shoes and springs from the front of a 50cc quad bike. The brake drums are made from exhaust pipe of the diameter of the brake shoes and a bit of 4mm thick steel plate cut the shape of a big washer and welded to a slice of exhaust pipe. The brake shoes are fitted to another bit of 4mm plate and 2 bolts with flats cut into them to work as cam's to push the shoes apart when turned. I hope this information is useful to someone 👍

Maurice are you able to post photos/details of what you did to modify your mobility scooter using most of the original parts? In my Shoprider scooter i have a 1.2amp 24V DC motor with a transfer gear case mounted to the transaxle. It has 12" diameter wheels. If i change the battery to 48V and change out the controller it seems it would be following what you have done. I was worried this higher voltage would burn the motor out quickly. What do you think?

Love you videos.sounds like it has plastic wheels,what is the sound we here as its rolling Resonate vibrations of plastic ?The trick to these swaps,is finding quality parts,sadly most of the cheap Chinese motors are junk.A nice motor goes a long way in making for a incredibly quiet ,high performance ride.These cheap motors ,will l drive you to drink and give you a huge headache.Look to a quality IPM (interior permanent magnet) motor for a super swap.with incredible performance.Also look to a all metal mobility cart with pneumatic tires.Love the slicks .

I hear that putting larger rear wheels on a mobility scooter can make it go a bit faster. Maybe this guy will try that. I am not sure of the exact size wheel required. But, But, it should be bigger in diameter i.e from 8" to 12 or 14" or even 16" or 18" 😳🤔 Not solid tyres no grip But, i suppose if doing this sort of thing ( drifting ) they maybe a better solution to use. As I'm no expert in this field i just heard that larger wheels gives more speed. But, can tilt front up very quickly due to theamount of power given to the rear wheels So, either a anti tilt at rear ( similar to those used at Santa Pod ) or extra weight at front to stop it from raising up at the front & causing a nasty 🤕 But, i am not a fan of drifting on any type of vehicle But, each to their own i suppose.

Feed that new motor as many volts as you can depending on what your controller is rated for. It’ll allow you to better manage your amperage and you can start playing around with some serious gearing changes. You have 4, 12 volt batteries. Wire the batteries in series for 48 volts. You’ll need a new battery charger. The only downside will be that you’ll reduce your amp hours to whatever a single battery is rated for.

@BushPilot444
@BushPilot444 5 лет назад
Use smaller, more narrow batteries and nest about three of them so you can get 36 volts and then hold on tight for a jet-like experience. Make sure first that your speed controller can take it.

I am a long time disabled user of a mobility scooter. Speed is limited to 4mph which is plenty when surrounded by people walking as in a store or at a theme park. Don't understand why a person would want to go much faster or to "drift" a mobility type scooter, there are better and safer configurations for racing or exhibition purposes. Expect oppressive licensing and restrictive legislation after a few accidents.

I’ve done something similar, I think even the same motor , controller etc. however I cannot get that motor to put out enough torque to really get moving, yours seemed to get going easy but mine seems as if I need a gear reduction motor to get the required torque. Any ideas??
