Around the Corner from Frozen Head State Park is the Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary. Over a 120 years of history and human suffering. Forced Free Coal mining using prisoners. Very interesting history.

Great Video! Hope to see more like this, especially when you travel through those little off the interstate towns that everyone misses; would love to see local sites on the way to your next campground!

I like to stay as far from interstates as possible. So more to come. Thanks for the common

Gotta' love those old timers stories. My mom in-law was born in 1922. The stories she has about growing up in NYC through the depression and WWII are priceless. Those people back then truly were the greatest generation. It makes $4 or $5 a gallon for gas look trivial. As usual, love your videos!

Thanks Tom, Yes it is truely sad we don't have many recordings of WWI & II vets telling us what the world was like back before Penicillin, union jobs, connectivity, and all the other "Luxuries" we have now!

Whoa….interesting place in so many ways. Beautiful nature surrounding a sad, terrifying place…. The gentleman who had been a resident certainly gave life to the history of the place. I’m ready for a nice campground tour now - escape!

Really interesting history, I'm going to have to check this out. I like the distillery unique way to pay for prison maintenance and upkeep. If you ever travel to Illinois visit the Joliet Correctional Center (Blues Brothers) built in 1858. An interesting fact my uncle was a guard there!
@GoingNoWhereFast
@GoingNoWhereFast 2 года назад
Well, better a guard than an inmate! Ya, there is one in Ohio too. They are cool, but the ones in the south have a very interesting history since most were suddenly full of "free Workers" soon after Emancipation of the slaves! Funny how that just worked out.

Fascinating history tour of a place many would overlook on their way to somewhere else. Regrettably the south has a history of the coal and steel barons making their fortunes from the free or cheap labor of conscripted prisoners, many of whom were snatched off the streets for minor offenses or nothing more than being poor and homeless. When the mine and mill owners needed labor, the order went out and the sheriffs would start a roundup, with many of the local constables pocketing a "finder's" fee. Cruel and corrupt.

It was a very hard and long time before the south gave up some form of slavery or another. Yes it was a post civil war form of slave labor. Eventually the culture changes, too bad it takes so many generations!

In an unusually dry forest no less. Maybe a little poor planning here. Thanks for the comment!

Visited this place in 2021 on a trip to gatlinburg. We went in totally blind never even hearing of brushy mtn. Next time im in the area, ill be sure to make a trip back! This was a very interesting place to visit. And especially after seeing more of the history of this place, im excited to return again.

I was fortunate to have visited Alcatraz (as a tourist). Can't imagine the life prisoners must have lived back in the day. Thanks for the video.........

Its really too bad they can't release the hours of video they had (Have?) on file of this prison. It didn't close until 2009(?). Though they shut down the coal mines in the 70's. Still it would have told a much more realistic story than the slightly dramatized episodes that occurred on an annual basis. It was hard time but it was usually boring. I have many friends who were prison guards. One was a tower sniper at Dannemora up in the ADK. He shot 17 times and killed 2 men in his 25 yrs at the prison.

Talking to the owners/ leasers They don't plan to have it all repaired and open for another 4-5 years, and then they will start cleaning it up and making it a little more "Authentic to the times".

Different kind of history that is not normally on YT. Very interesting really. Tours given by ex-inmates, who better for the stories. That was nice clear drone footage. 🙂👍

Glad you enjoyed it. It was a fun visit. A little rushed because the boy was in the car and it was sunny, though cold. I still worry.

You should! Its a tad Expensive, and its kind of just getting off the ground, so I want to go back in 3 or 4 years, but the "Alumni" may not still be there. So its a coin toss. There are many other RU-vid Videos with Interviews of Other Prisoners/Guards. So much info to digest.
