I'm retired and sold a lot of PS Audio gear over the years in a shop here in Vienna, Austria. I worked over 30 years in the business (an still do a little bit for may personal pleasure), and over all I have to tell, that for me PS Audio was/is the nicest company, I had the pleasure to deal with. The products (as You have said) sound really great, You get very good value for money and the people working there are all kind and helpful. There is a spirit in that company, that is "old fashioned" in the very best sense. Their products produced many of happy customers. ...and Paul is really a loveable guy! Thank You for the music and the joy You gave (and still) give me.

I enjoy my PS Audio units. You are spot on with your observations. I had a minor cosmetic issue with one of my units. It took some effort to get resolved. Level 1 technical and warranty support was terrible. Some emails were ignored. I contacted Paul directly. He lights fires when customers are not happy. Things get resolved quickly. Much respect for him. I would not hesitate to buy more PS products. When paired with the right speakers, sound is excellent. Some have commented my PS Audio / Dali room is the best system they have ever heard.

I've owned a few PS Audio products and I've always been satisfied. I currently (no pun) use PS Audio's older Duet and Quintet power centers. I also enjoyed the Digital Link III DAC which I found to be tremendous value with amazing ability to upgrade any streaming/CD transport setup. Their pricing is a bit high for my recent budget so I tend to buy used, usually through CAM.

I watched your entire video and I must say you made PS Audio sound like an awesome company. They should be very happy with your video. As far as putting things on sale, I agree with you, everything should be marketed at list price and the "store" should be able to make a "deal" with the customer. Appreciate your honestly in the video, it really came though as honest.

I do feel PS audio is one of the better Manufacturers out there, I've met Paul and Chris Brunhaver at shows and I've had a good experience with them. Nice People. If I have a criticism at all, its that Paul will not miss a chance to self promote (as is his right of course) and I've seen this rub people up the wrong way. But generally I feel the heart of the company is in the right place and the products are good. Right now I have the DSD Mk2 on my shortlist and just waiting for a demo unit to be arranged (I'm in UK before you ask).

Again another great video. My "bad" is the pricing. When they went to the direct sales model their prices remained at dealer retail. I questioned this practice at the last Rocky Mountain Audio show and didn't get a satisfactory response. I would have expected their pricing to be reduced since they eliminated the dealer chain in the U.S..

Their discount is the trade in program. I have used it several times and recently on a discounted model. No quibbling - gave me full price credit on a 10 year old CD player. Yes, it’s a pain to pack up your trade in and expensive to mail but hopefully someone else will make use of it.

It may seem like they should have lowered prices going factory direct, but for high end audio equipment, its a terrible business model. The only advantage PS Audio has over most other direct sales brands, is everyone knows who they are. And that's a big advantage for them. The single biggest problem for direct sales is advertising. 100% of promotion costs are bourn by the manufacturer. And its not even the best type of advertising. There's no substitute for having your gear displayed in a retail store, and having potential customers see and hear it in real life. If you are a smaller, lesser known company, other brands do the advertising for you. For example, if you make speakers, customers are going to be drawn to established brands. When they come into the store to hear a pair of Wilson's. B+W, Sonas Faber, etc...., they are going to see, and maybe audition your speakers as well. That can't happen any other way. Not too far behind is inventory structure. Yes, dealer cost is less than retail so they make less money on the product, but there are some upside to it. Traditional manufacturers almost always have some form minimum requirements for demo units and stock. For example, if PS Audio has a 20 piece minimum that the dealer is required to stock, they get paid right away for all 20 pieces. Now those products are sitting on someone's else's shelves waiting to be sold.

Isn’t a refurbished item one that isn’t working and needs some work. If it’s working it doesn’t need refurbishment. Choice of words? Generally premium hifi which is used goes for half price plus a ‘bit’ depending on age.

Wow Love the honesty, I don’t stream only vinyl and CD but I get the impression most Dac’s or streamers don’t hold their value because of constant improvements. Wonder if the amplifiers and other gear loose that much value. For me that’s the most important factor, resale value, McIntosh has always been the leader. Don’t know anyone who doesn’t upgrade at some point. Gear that holds its value is money in the bank. 😎

The big discounts dilute the brand. It appears they may be cranking out more units than they should. PS should make some kind of forecast on what they sell or make fewer. If there is more demand, make a short back order time. As it is, if I bought at full retail only to have it go on sale later, I would ask for the difference back. PS is also shooting themselves in the foot by not having authorized dealers in the US. I never heard of the brand until I saw a video of the Sprout on youTube. Marketing themselves and positioning themselves in high end dealers would do wonders.

I have the P12 power plant and it’s great. I think one issue with PS Audio is the industrial styling. I don’t care for it. It looks like an afterthought although I’m sure it’s not. Saying that, I have the greatest respect for Paul McGowan. I have absolutely no doubt that he would suggest another product over his own if he thought that was better for you.

Adrian, I think the biggest issue with PS is they offer trade-in in the USA but no such program for Canada. They should somehow worked out some kind of deal with the distributor in Canada to offer a similar program. For people that want to upgrade like the DS DAC its almost impossible since you have so many used ones in the second hand market. This does not help the consumer or the dealers in Canada.

I live in New Zealand and I doubt anyone here would be able to "try before they buy" a PS Audio product. The importer would have to obtain the unit from Boulder and if the customer didn't like it for whatever reason, the importer would have to either return it to Boulder, or try and sell it to someone else. I don't think he would be prepared to take the risk. In 2011 I took a punt and ended up purchasing the PerfectWave SACD transport and the DirectStream MK I DAC and I was very happy with them. However, what I hadn't realised was that the DAC had actually been on the market for some time and that it was soon to be replaced by an improved model. Your video, Adrian, was one of the reasons I decided to trade in the earlier DAC. I have had the Mk 2 DAC for about three weeks now and, sadly, it has a major fault - no right hand channel when using the RCA outputs (none of my equipment has XLRs) - and it is currently being serviced in Auckland as I write with the replacement of one of the boards. Hopefully, all will be well after that and I will be in the position to put it through its paces.

@@dap777754 Thanks for your comment. Both units have provided truly excellent sound but the Mk 2 has a higher output, which perhaps gives a positive subjective impression and I also recall sensing a slightly greater degree of warmth to the sound with certain recordings when I first listened to the Mk 2. However, it's been quite some time since I upgraded, so the sound of the newer unit is all I really recall now.

I only own a PS Audio Juice Bar II in conjunction with another passive power distributor … which is „only“ a passive component (meanwhile discontinued) but I feel it does a great job in distributing the power without any loss at all. Although I‘ve never owned a component from PS Audio apart from that I actually never had the urge to get anything else from them…I don’t really like the looks of their components (they to my eyes look more like electronics which are placed in hospitals) and my guts tells me that their other stuff is barely „HighEnd“. I find Paul very nice in his videos and he’s certainly a great guy…but I don’t feel attracted towards his PS Audio products. My other gear ranges from Wilson Audio, Krell CD -Player from Dan‘s era, Einstein Tube preamp to Pass Labs Monos…just to put everything into context. Greetings from Germany

Is this the guy that loves to say the name Baskin like it's a magic spell word? That Paul guy seems like he believes in his own little world a little too much if you get my meaning lol. Well, I for one think it's forgettable. PS audio is for people who love marketing hype and eat it up also people who love good specs on paper who are tone deaf and say things like How many watts does it have or The bass shakes my walls. I like music to move me to tears sometimes tears of joy lol and I like to feel when I listen but people listen for whatever reason they want nothing wrong with the first scenario. Many are like this when their young and naïve. When you get older sometimes you value the beauty texture depth and soul in music more than how loud or how much bass output it reproduces. Getting all those things is not always possible no matter the budget. Solid State from my experience does all the things the specs say bass down to mid-20s this and that but it all sounds like a reproduction minus the heart and soul. Good tube equipment point to point with the right tubes and design with tube rectification put meat on the bones the notes are thicker juicier more lifelike. I even prefer the bass produced by tube amps. The longest I have been able to listen to solid-state gear is an hour after that I need some aspirin. With my Soundlab A1PXs and Joule Electra OTLS I have listened for 8 hours straight and fell asleep in the blanket of comforting sound.

@@erics9754 Having watched some of his RU-vid videos, I am not a fan of Paul McGowan because he is often blowing smoke or his videos are often an unorganized stream of consciousness (or unconsciousness). However, I believe that the PS Audio BHK line of products are hybrid designs with tube input stages, so not 100% solid-state. I have not heard them, but I assume the BHK line sounds at least a little more tube-like than 100% solid-state. As far as the tube vs solid-state argument in general, I don't listen to music to fall asleep, so I don't have a problem with high quality solid-state electronics, but I mostly listen to music that has been well-recorded in the digital age, versus the older stuff with questionable recording quality (regardless of whether it was remastered). But it is undoubtedly true that "some" recorded music sounds better with some tubes in the signal path, even if not 100% tubes.

It was also clear the staff were not communicating with each other to assist me the best way they could.

Great video, really loving this series. One thing you mention as a negative (resale value) is a massive positive for me as I generally buy used gear. At the prices PS audio gear goes for in the used market the value is out of this world.

These videos are SUPERB! It's not always possible to hear Good, Bad, and Ugly about a company which will affect a prospective purchase decision as the buyer will ultimately have to deal with the "Company" for warranty at some point and their commitment status is very important. Also I own some PS gear and would love for you to review the Air Lens as I don't stream anything on my main system and am considering it. Thank you again for your commitment to your customer base!

You say you like the PS equipment ... But have a negative comment on the build quality ..... Soft plexiglass , and push buttons feel soft ... Not built to last .... And the repair costs are too high ... "The power regenerators" So PS parts may not be so reliable.... Don't you think that ,This is .... probably the reason for their Low Resales Value ...

I am a big fan of Paul. To use the term, "value for money" and PS Audio is laughable. Their prices are triple the value. For that matter, I came into your store to look around, not from the area, and I was treated rather cold.

Once again an excellent honest assessment. I especially liked that you mentioned resale values and how they are negatively affected by special deals through dealers. So many private sellers expect top Dollar for components that can be had through dealers with warranty and support for less.

I’ve owned many PSA electronic products, none at the eye-watering price levels (most of them bought used) and have found all of them to be capable units. Their customer service and communication is the best I’ve ever experienced. I have had some QC issues with my new units which were semi-major issues but they handled them well. I think the prices are inflated but I would assume that they’re covering the costs of their return and trade-in policy. I have picked up a couple of new pieces during substantial sales. Right now I only have the Stellar Phono Preamp which I absolutely love, even though I have issues with a small hum if I turn it up loud. When Darren was still there we had a phone session where he tried to help me get rid of hum (never did) and PSA went so far as to replace most of the internals, so probably the problem is on my side. The forums are monitored by PS members and Paul himself will chime in when he sees an opportunity to clarify or explain. The resale value is well known and can be a turnoff when the new prices seem high ($7000 for a SACD transport?). Still, there’s a lot of love for Paul, Scott, and the whole crew there.

I 98% agree with you on your PS Audio comments. My system is 90% PS Audio equipment and I love it. I own a pair od Stellar M1200 Class D monoblocks and I suggest you relisten to them. In my opinion they beat out amplifiers that cost 4 or 5 times more than them. I previously owned a BHK250, and a lot more expensive stuff in the past, and I truly believe the M1200's sound better. In regards to the Airlens, I recommend that you do evaluate the one your friend has or get oen for the store. BTW, I love your videos. Please keep them coming!

I use high end studio gear, because that's what music is recorded on. It's markedly cheaper, and sounds great in my treated room. Adam monitors, Presonus interface, Behringer ultra curve, Mogami cable, JBL nanopatch. No "audiophile" products whatsoever. Expensive doesn't necessarily mean quality.

I drank the PS Audio koolaid a long time ago. Your comments mirror my experiance. All BHK products are wonderful The new directstream DAC mk 2 is superb. I have used the Stella Strata in 3 different systems for family and friends. It is a solid core piece of equipment that does just about everything well. I agree that the fit and finish can sometimes be an issue. I have found their touch screens to be klugy and their pressing buttons a cheap feel. I think that first and foremost they are a hardware company with excellent design and parts. With the notable execption of Ted who designed and programed both Directstream DACs their software implementation is quite lacking. Setting up the Stella Strata on WiFi is too complicated. Changing an inputy name takes about half an hour with one letter at a time. There again the touch screen is worthless unless you jump out of your chair and get within five feet to see what is going on

PS Audio soundstage is certainly a good point for them but IMO it's just that. I find their products lacking in dynamics. Also they have noise issues, both from the speakers and the unit themselves. I have noise coming from my P15, BHK250, you can hear them pretty easily at night. Resell value sucks largely because of the trade in program, you can basically assume the MSRP price is listed minus trade in.

I love PS audio but have been somewhat turned off by some of the, “Snake oil,” aspects that he perpetuates with controversial aspects like cables and such. That being said I really do believe that Paul and others there actually believe in everything they speak on. Not sure if that’s inherently a good or bad thing but just my personal view I suppose. I’m not gonna argue that cables don’t make a difference because at the end of the day if you are happy then that’s all that matters. I believe cables matter but don’t think anything beyond a product such as what blue jeans produces will necessitate a better sound, soundstage, or revealing aspects within said media source. I’ve heard fancy cables but just can’t get behind it. I deal with electrical within my trade on a daily basis and I just can’t make sense of it especially if you have cheap higher gauge wire in your wall to begin with… idk not trying to start a big fight here but regardless I can get behind the company even with said things I disagree with due to the people there where I might not with others. Some things can’t necessarily be measured in any useful way that makes sense relative to what sounds, “Good,” to the ear which I understand. I’ll continue to be somewhat open to the subject but have yet found any demo to move me differently at this point

if the used market has so low prices, it just means they're highly overpiced and only people looking for a logo pay the price when new. There is no real value for the price and no one wants to pay for used products when they can get better as new. Or there are known issues with the parts life time and no one wants to buy something expensive if it doesn't last

I also enjoy Paul's RU-vid channel. I've been using PS Audio on and off for years. My biggest gripe is the PS Audio's IR codes conflict with LG products. I can't use any PS Audio devices in the same room as say a LG TV, or Blue-ray player. I contacted PS Audio and they claim it's not their fault but LG's. Well, LG is a enormous company and they aren't going to change all their IR codes to accommodate a niche company like PS Audio. PS Audio needs to fix this - but they refuse to. I've ended up selling off all my PS Audio equipment.
