1. True. Western media mainly just includes k-pop on their news and events for clout. K-pop have a big fanbase on the west but the western entertainment industry as a whole does not take K-pop seriously.

Kpop does not have a huge fanbase in America. Bts does. The average Us critizen does know what kpop is but all they know is that means twink boy group. Y’all celebrate when your fave band is on the hot 100 but most Americans don’t listen to the radio or top 10 Spotify hits. It’s just not a thing in America. Does that mean these groups don’t deserve respect. Of course not. But Korea is so racist itself that they make fun of black peoples trying to get into kpop even though kpop is built on black culture and it’s hard for western groups to win competitions there even though they are much better . All that to say y’all dragging America but at least they try. Those photographer who was racist should be fired . The others were just trolling. Which is a thing in America. Stray kids looked lost and under dressed. They won’t coddle them.

@@yeol174 What I mean is Kpop idols want the same thing that western media wants: access to their audience to gain recognition and relevancy. Stans constantly look down on western media and accuse them of "using idols for clout" as if idols are there out of the goodness of their pure hearts. Idols go on these shows and events to boost their image and grow their recognition. Stans also chastise western media for not understanding/knowing kpop industry norms but overlook that idols don't find it relevant to educate themselves about the culture and norms of the shows and events they insist on attending. Each party is looking for something from the other to enhance and elevate themselves while giving the bare minimum when it comes to cultural accommodations and understanding which could make the exchange easier and less hurtful.

1. I remember last month the LA dodgers posted a photo of ATEEZ on their IG and Americans were calling them "who are these beautiful ladies?" on the comments. That is just next level rude and racist. A lot of fans got furious and the rude commenters were just laughing at the fans reactions. Trying to get western validation is really hard.

If the Ateez members/staff looked at the uhm...thoughts...of non Atiny in the comment sections during Kingdom Legendary War series, I am sure the rantings of jealous beer bellied baseball fans seem quite tame. Dodger players, staff and stadium attendants were super nice and the guys actually had fun. I think it was so comfortable for them because only the members who seriously follow baseball in real life went to the game. You see their excitement and I think that made their hosts very happy and crowd more accepting.

I strongly disagree with the first opinion. We're constantly forgetting that it's not a mental validation and "getting patted in the back" thing. It's simply the fact that the West has the biggest and most PROFITABLE music market in the world. Artists don't go there for compliments but to get more fans, more brand deals, and more recognition. It's not a matter of pride but of development. The biggest K-pop artists are those who are recognized in the West BECAUSE of the perks that come with it. And even if it was only about mental validation, I still don't think the approach of K-pop artists quitting instead of pushing for West to stop acting like jerks is the way to go. It's like dropping out of school because of bullies instead of reporting them. And saying K-pop idols aim for recognition in the West just for the sake of changing a global opinion is like saying a bullied student is going to school just to prove the bullies wrong, and not because they're goingin there to study.

You are definitely spilling nothing but facts here! In 2023 the disposable income per capita of SK (in USD) was $435.60; America's per capita disposable income was $60,326.00. Kpop companies are here for that loot plain and simple. Besides, the more angry the fandom is, the more income they spend to prove their idols worth so they still win no matter what they do.

I have mixed feelings about the skz/met gala/western validation situation: 1. They 100% deserve an apology because what this guy supposedly said about them is absolutely filled with racist micro aggressions and shouldn’t be tolerated 2. Stays should not be leaking this guys personal information and sending him death threats, like Ive actually seen insta reels with this guys info, which is not okay. It’s a bad reflection on the fandom and the group. This guy is responsible for his own words and actions, but last time stays did this, Chans room was cancelled 3. Kpop, from its inception, was created with the west in mind. It takes from a lot of western music and concepts and kpop was a crucial aspect of the hallyu wave (which primary purpose is to expand part of Korean culture to a global audience aka the west). 4. It’s so strange to me that 3rd gen and onward groups, but specifically groups like SKZ, where international audiences is so important to their success, say western validation isn’t important. Like that’s kind of the point. If they didn’t care about it, they’d be making music like Lim Young Woong and doing amazing in Korea, but they’re not. They’re creating music that is heavily influenced by the west (specifically black culture), to appeal to a wide western audience and gain those international fans which is so needed for their success. I’m sorry, but you can’t have your cake and eat it too.

SkZ Arent influenced by "black culture" and they have declared this back when they made thunderous. There's a reason that song and stray kids were chosen by the president to represent Korea and that big Expo In SA. That song is about how they DID NOT take rap from America, but that it is a part of South Korea that goes back over 1000 years. "Rap" is how the traveling storytellers used to, well, tell their stories. Along with dance. That is where Stray Kids take their BASE inspiration. I mean... ill be honest, you are the best stray kids educated person i have come across... except at the same time you still don't seem to know anything ABOUT SKZ. Yeah.. that doesn't come off exsctly accurate. But its kinda like you have a great outside looking in perspectice that shows you have actually been trying to understand things (thamk you) but unfortunately the people that are relaying info are, it seems, uhh, unique at a cellular level! Therefore it's basically impossible for anyone to NOT have some kind of misgivings or just plain confusion regarding them. Oh, yeah, speaking of, that is not how Chans room got canceled. (Seriously, and its not hard to prove. The fandom has screenshots of the posts made againt and chan them that are all dated to right after a single account caused trouble and before any success at rage baiting occured. ) I watched as countless people brought a single multi stans account to all of STAY and said LOOK WHAT YOY ARE DOING! And then proceeded to accuse Chan of serious and horrific crimes until... via ways I would rather not spell out because I still hold massive amounts of unadulterated loathing... they won, and he had to apologize. So, those two situations are NOTHING alike. Furthermore,"Stay" isn't doing anything to that guy. As "STAY" is 16 million strong on RU-vid alone and unfortunately, none of us actually know eachother, nor can we control eachothers actions. The people responsible for the tis quite literally a handful, and we told them not to do it, but they are actual children. Most of whom are around 12. They are in every fandomxand they are all on some kind of power trip in kpop where they are finally capable of doing things that have effects I the world. They are playing adult, and they have no idea what they are doing and are completely controlled by their emotions. Blaming "STAY" does nothing, because they are then1%of all famdoms. No one can control them, they can't even control themselves. They are dumb, and they are completely lacking in empathy, cause and effect, as well as common sense. I mean, I would totally tell their mommy on them, but unfortunately they also happen to be the hackers, so yeah, i dont know how.... Hey, at least they have a skill, right? They are definitely gonna need that in prison someday! All that aside... I 100% agree that the move is problematic as all hell and a complete and utter embarrassment for the group. Which seems to be the shining success of kpop fans these days, in regard to every fandom. The difference is the size of said fandom. The larger it is, the larger the stupid ass 1% is and the louder they will be. Simple as that.

1. I disagree. You guys need to stop thinking of kpop so personally and think of it like a business. Naturally you want to expand as much as possible, and as much as people are annoyed with the US, at the end of the day if you make it in America you make it everywhere. I think if people don’t know who Stray Kids are then they have work to do. I understand it was rude and embarrassing, and that’s not cool, but it shows them and their team that they need to start making hits in the US. I don’t know what strings their team pulled to get them there but they clearly pulled strings because in the US, only kpop stans know them. Only BTS and Blackpink were able to seriously break the mold like that. So if SKZ want to be a global powerhouse like them (what business doesn’t?), then they need to start making a name in America.

A bit of a overreaction. It was unfortunate by those rough male photographer types are belligerent to even A-list American stars, ever watch those paparazzi videos harassing Alec Baldwin or whoever? I feel bad for Stays and Stray Kids but withdrawing to Korea solves nothing and just lowers their income already low due to China's actions. As a Korean millenial I think American media is very nice to Kpop groups when before BTS and Kpop became popularized there was a lot stronger racism against Korea. Like when Seoul hosted the Olympics one white sportswriter went on a rant about Koreans burying jars of kimchi to let them ferment in his column. Now its mostly positive articles about Kpop. I don't see any problem with what the Stray Kids members wore to the Met Gala (even Nicholas Galitzine just wore a black tux). It seems like for men to get positive feedback, they have to show up in something outlandish (an article I read did imply that Galitzine's choice was boring 🙄). Regarding K-pop groups' English songs, I've always wondered why they just don't release English versions of their popular Korean songs. It still irritates me that TXT was made to promote "Magic" in the U.S. when there were soooooo many better Korean songs Hybe could have translated and chosen instead.

1… it’s not only that "western" ego is a problem. I’ve heard many opinions that quite a lot of Koreans strongly look up to/idolize USA, thus Americans (mostly white Americans tho…), thus the kpop industry will also seek the validation from and idolize western artists. They need to realize that western artists are not necessarily better, that USA and Americans are not automatically better. Everything’s got their own positives and flaws and kpop doesn’t necessarily need western validation, or validation of western artists. K-pop idols should appeal to their fans (within reason of course!!)
@michaelmayo
@michaelmayo Месяц назад
I'd add one bit to this. I don't think it's just "white Americans" that are on the Kpop train. I've noticed a lot of Black reactors love the Koreans, not only they're beautiful and talented, but because they boldly marched in and planted their rap flag right next to theirs and said "Hold my soju". You don't think those guys are in awe of Lisa or Soyeon and her machine-gun bars? Oddly enough, they may be less racist towards the Koreans than whites because they've earned their respect for honoring a musical form largely disrespected in the west until the Koreans came along and showed how it could be integrated in with Kpop songs and make them even better. It's even something with an official position, main rapper, and taught as a song skill. That's impressive for something that was only recently regarded as thug music.

@@michaelmayo I wasn't even talking about music. I wasn't talking about people being in awe of kpop, I was talking about how the quite common standards to treat white Americans better in Korea is not so good, because like, USA is not the dreamland anymore, it’s just a regular country among the wealthy ones. Also white people often have naturally paler skin, it’s a beauty standard in Korea to have pale skin (although it has been for a long time, and has little to do with white people) so they are treated better. Of course not all Koreans think that way, I would say individually they probably mostly don’t, but as a group, these kind of behavior (idolizing westerners, mostly white westerners) is still existing, in public etc. All this could make things more difficult, when trying to realize that kpop industry shouldn’t need western validation because westerners/USA/Americans are not in fact necessarily better than Korea and Koreans (both countries are technologically advanced and have their own social problems, it’s not like one is better or worse).

I highly agree with the 3rd opinion. Kpop companies seem to never care about any effort into the soundscapes of any groups when it comes to English singles. Better Things are Life Too Short are clearly English songs made to appeal to the Western market by using generic and corporate soundscapes made for the Billboard 100. That's the issue with English singles from a compositional standpoint because, ultimately, nothing is interesting. I can name a couple of English songs from kpop groups that I think kpop companies have put effort into them such as most of the English songs in the Formula Of Love album by TWICE, Key's Cool As and Nothing by Kiss Of Life. They are examples that these K-pop companies have put effort into these English songs, and I hope all K-pop companies put effort into every single song, not just the group's Korean songs.

3. You need to understand not everyone in a kpop group can pull off english songs. They keep it minimalist so that its listenable (pronunciation) and easy to remember (lyrics). English is not their first language. Yet these groups do the most for their western fans - IVE, AESPA, GIDLE. They deserve some praise, really. Its a start, maybe in a few years, after few more tours, they will be capable of putting out better and improved english songs. Not every group can pull of Dynamite (one english song that can takeover charts), so these groups start slow and make their way. Not every english track they put out needs to be groundbreaking. Its a start! Have a heart, come on now! PS : Life's too short and better things were unique and something new for AESPA. I would argue they were least forgettable among all the english songs of other kpop groups out there.

I believe Stray's management's first mistake was sending those boys to the MG without any prep. Did they research past Met Gala's? Did they not pay attention when celebrities walk through? No, they did not. It is usually one or two celebrities walking the carpet... you know why? So all the lined up photographers can get pictures from every angle. You know why they do that? It's because it's a fashion show. Designers want their creations... their clothing to be seen, not just the celebrities. I don't fault the group, I fault their management for not being prepared. Those photographers scream at everybody. Turn this way. Turn that way. So they can get the money shot of the celebrity and the designer outfit. Them walking the carpet as a group only made things worse. How can they get decent pictures when everybody is gathered together? Yes the photographers were rude but sorry to say, Strays aren't special in that regard. They are like that with anyone that is not giving them what they want. And that's a clear shot. It also didn't help that the boys looked uncomfortable and that's on management too.

Agreed on the Kids looking a little "What are we doing here?" That's why Jennie's gesture of (subtle) concern and solidarity was undoubtedly appreciated. When you've got Jennie (and by extension Blackpink) in your corner, you don't have to worry about the rest. I'd be surprised if a collab with Jennie didn't eventually come out of this...

Fromis_9 the only girl group that can sing in Hybe and has the best visual group in kpop ever and what does Hybe do with them, they gave them the Gfriend treatment instead 😭. Imo Aespa’s Better Things was really good and you forgot Hold On tight which was a English song and both songs were better than The Feel by Twice, and you also forgot the disappointing IVE English debut which was basically a cover and Saweetie getting the original and iconic lines 😭.

I agree that the outfits look modest, restrained and not creative enough for the Met Gala. I think that the outfits for the event were coordinated between designers and agencies in order to satisfy the conservative Korean public, whose support the idols primarily need. Regarding the public and photographers, I am not surprised because I heard that the USA is the most racist country and they are especially intolerant towards Asians. All these jokes about the Covid (assuming SKZ are Chinese), "arigato" (assuming SKZ are Japanese) and also "the same kpop group only without a coat" - "you never know" ("all Asians look the same" thing)... obviously these people said these things out loud on camera without hesitation or fear of consequences because in their country there will be no consequences for those. Disgusting.
@DaisyDee5610
@DaisyDee5610 Месяц назад
Who are you to say that the USA is the most racist? It is just that news of certain negative events get exposed globally because the country has a more open and liberal press. The USA has the most diverse population with almost every culture that lives here so of course there are problems. Every country has some form of racism but we don’t censor the press nor do we imprison people who are different (like a certain country I know that starts with C). And if the USA was so racist, why do all these people want to come and live here?!! I have to be honest but Korea is not free of racism either. People who are darker or are bi-racial face some discrimination.

I think it’s mainly to spread to a bigger audience which is understandable since in a lot of interviews many Koreans say they prefer traditional Korean music and not Kpop/Krap, ETC. First off, the treatment stray kids received is terrible and they didn’t deserve it. But secondly, i feel like people forget how American paparazzi are, they are usually rude and entitled. Kanye, for example, is someone who has been very vocal about his hate for paparazzi because of how they treat people, more-so him. Like i feel like people are so used to how pretty respectful the paparazzi is in Asia that they forget that some paparazzi in other places don’t care as much about respect

1) As someone from the US, our media SUCKS. That is why I like kpop and enjoy introducing it to friends. I'm disappointed that SKZ were treated the way they were but I am so proud of them for showing up and continuing to remain professional. It says everything that needs to be said. I hope more people look into SKZ because of it! They deserve better 🙏💕 2) I'm genuinely not familiar with Fromis because I have never really liked their music. The way Hybe treats their employees is terrible and why I don't support any of their groups. 3) JYPE are the only company with English tracks I enjoy. I think Itzy has polarized opinions in general but I genuinely love their music, ALL of it. It's definitely not "for everyone" in Korea OR US standards. 4) I was really surprised about Solar's album but I think that it suits her because she is kind of all over the place. I feel like it doesn't do favors for her identity with the public but Colors ISN'T good... 5) Sullyoon is great and Nmixx is great. I love them. I think they sleep on Nmixx often but they're incredibly versatile and every member adds their own charm. It's gorgeous. 6) Idgaf about idols' dating culture unless the person is problematic (like Hyuna) or hurt my fave (Jihyo with Kang Daniel....fck that dude). Hearing Room and Talk About It makes me feel for her in such a sad way. She is such a great performer too.

I completely agree with your position. Honestly, the west couldn't care less about kpop, and they never will. Not as long as "republicans" and "the right" esists. So, f**k um! HOWEVER, that is EXACTLY why im so damn pissed baiut what happened with Stray Kids. Neither them, OR JYPE is or even was seeking waetern validation. That right there is why it made me so mad AS AN AMERICAN. Because tjose boys were LITERALLY just doing Tommy Hilfiger a FAVOR, as they have MASSIVE pull in the fashion industry. (He knew he would snag the #1 spot with them. Even though it was yhwir first big US fashion debut.) So they did that for him. That said, Neither Stray Kids nor JYPE seem to care about the west and more than they do anywhere else. Yes, they are MEGA popular here, but they kn no way cater to the US. Not even a little bit. Lol On fact, their new single, whoch is all in English and made with Charlie Puth... wven FILMED IN the US. Was NEVER labeled as an English single, nor was it prompted to the west or even remotely directed at the US specifically. They promoted it the same way they always do their releases. 😂 Meanwhile, when it omes to Japan... they DEFINITELY aim to be priority there and they go the whole 9 yards. Japanese albums, Japanese single, All labeled as such, and heavy promotion there. They do none of that when it comes to the west. Hell, the only reason they have ANY english music is because w of them are native speakers and 2 more are fluent. Lol at the end of the day, they are aiming themselves at Asia, and hoping to get THEIR validation. They already have the world in their palms... Its back home they are trying to convince to give them a chance. Of course... Whilst dominating Japan completely. Lol Sadly, Hybe is the one who wants to own the wast and make kpop all about it. JYPE seems very focused on either "global" as a whole, however when it comes to the highest focus on a continental scale its definitely Asia. As for specific countries... SKorea and Japan.

Half right. You want validation from your fans no matter the nationality, but seeking approval from a bunch of paycheck-chasing, cynical morons is pointless. Most of those "celebrities" couldn't begin to do half the things Kpop groups do.

And what do kpop groups do?
@michaelmayo
@michaelmayo Месяц назад
@@shortznig2938 What do they do? In the most basic physical terms, I don't think you'll ever see such a physically fit group outside of a gymnastics squad. They not only have to be physically fit, but learn to sing while also performing complex choreography. A lot of them also have a hand in composing and producing their music. I think this ranks a little higher than holding a camera and pushing a button. Kpop acts are the best performers in the world right now, IMHO. Plus, it was pretty snotty of the Paps to mouth off while taking photos of the Stray Kids. They wouldn't have dared diss the other attendees, and I'd be surprised if Wintour wasn't furious about it as well. These things may be ridiculous, but they're supposed to be well-oiled machines that keep all the VIPs happy. Now Wintour has an entire country pissed off at her because a few assholes acted like amatures instead of professionals. Way to Go, Anna!
@skillbopster
@skillbopster Месяц назад
The met gala is laughed at and despised in america. So why do kpop idols want to be seen there?
@michaelmayo
@michaelmayo Месяц назад
@@skillbopster Well, the short version is it's business. You're not invited to Anna's bash unless you are Someone. Since a lot of attendees also have fashion deals, this checks showing your colors. It also shows Wintour's clout since no one turns down an invite. Jennie's been invited twice, which shows she has real status in the fashion world and Stray Kids getting invited is a big sign they've arrived. It's also networking since a lot of the attendees rarely get to meet unless it's at events like these so this gives the VVIPS a chance to meet and size up possible prospects. The Koreans also have a nice position since they're not part of American politics so no one's going to pester them about supporting Biden or whoever. Since Jennie's a foreign national, I'm not even sure she's allowed to donate to an American political party. So even though the rest of America thinks it's a crock of shit, it's still a good deal for the Koreans to go. None of their fans are going to gig them for going and they get to represent their country and it's "Soft Power" drive. Besides, since our girls (and the guys) know better than to wear some of those silly outfits, they usually show up looking great. Jennie's always a knockout and the Kids looked sharp. Win win.
