It’s very frustrating to me as a South African that “feeding the starving kids in Africa” is a marketing ploy but then we can’t even buy these products because it’s sold through Sephora who doesn’t sell to us. Please don’t use us for your marketing
@PurpleCurllGurl

As a South African also, I think that's a really damaging perspective to have. "Don't help people who need help because I, a South African who doesn't need assistance, doesn't need help and won't benefit from that help". You do know there are actually starving children in Africa so why would you be apposed to them receiving help, regardless of how it's gotten... It's really self centred.

You can do both. I think it's geared more towards the audience of people who don't donate regularly. If hyram was saying stop donating to ur fave charities and rely on these products alone, that would be fcked up. And yes they all benefit from avoiding taxes but at the end of the day, the small donation of each product adds up with the huge amount of sales.. and *people who don't care about donating and will probably never donate in their lives won't even know they're contributing a few cents to a donation* Idk about u but I think that's worth it. That's not exactly how tax deductions work. Usually donating part of the profits is simply marketing. You either get more people to buy the products or they'll be willing to pay more for the product and this will increase your profit by a higher amount than the donations are. You might give away 10% of profits but if this increases profits by e.g. 30% you're still making a net profit

HOWEVER, the recyclability claims turned me off from using these products, I work in the resource recovery industry and claiming that 'bio based' plastics are recyclable is quite misleading and goes against all the efforts that waste educators do, when consumers find out this type of packaging is not getting recycled, we are the ones who need to clean up the mess and re-educate them on the reasons why and how it doesn't apply to all packaging. I really hope I'm wrong and that the company consulted with the waste industry and performed tests for collection, sorting and re-processing in the places where these products are being sold that backs up those claims.

Coming from someone that works in development projects with international cooperation in developing countries (or so called third world countries), the interventions have to be so carefully prepared to make a proper impact and sadly, most of the times, donations from private companies do more harm that good for so many complex reasons... In reality this is just a manipulative marketing technique. There’s nothing wrong with that, of course, but I cannot stand when influencers pretend to care about the environment or others when all they really care about are the numbers in their bank account. Don’t get me started on the name. Are you kidding me? What is Selfless about this? Are you giving up all of your profits to help others? If he were being selfless, he would use his influence to campaign for already existing, larger brands to become more sustainable. He'd advocate for people to use simple, affordable products and donate the money they save to these kinds of causes. Instead he gets a tax break on unnecessarily expensive products, and gets praise for doing things other brands have been doing for years. FINALLY an honest review that actually addressed some of the problems with the brand. One cannot simply review the products and ignore the numerous issues surrounding. They are inextricably linked. Nor can one reasonably claim to have seen significant improvements in a week. One of my favorite SkinTubers claimed the retinol made his skin better in under a week. That’s not even possible. He also failed to comment on even a single problem with the brand. It was so disheartening. I almost unsubscribe. I respect this review from you. I honestly expected that you’d be the only major SkinTuber to address this brand in an honest, ethical way. There are a number of issues you didn’t address. But honestly, that might’ve been crossing into burning bridges territory. So I understand why you didn’t comment on those things. THANK YOU 🙏🏻 (also, thank you for not wearing makeup & using a filter while trying to sell me a skincare product…SUSS 🤨) Edit- if it wasn’t clear, I absolutely will not be buying this brand. If I hadn’t already unsubscribed from Hyram, I certainly would’ve after this launch.

The criticism that I have read and wholly agree with is saying this whole thing is very much white knighting. Even the name, I have some feelings about. Hyram, who already is a white person living in Hawaii, made some very interesting (uncomfortable) choices with the b role in his ad videos. Additionally, from what I know, recycling bioplastics is *incredibly* difficult and rare, often you need to send it to a very specific facilty. Maybe he found some bioplastic I don't know, but yeah. It would have been nice to see literally any certifications behind this - certified zero waste facilty, b corp, certified fair trade, ANYTHING to back up his very, very big claims. 😕 even just being part of 1% for the planet! That would automatically provide transparency with actual proof, as opposed to all of his big claims of donating to 'save the planet'. Overall, I wouldn't buy it if it wasn't from Hyram, therefore, I am not buying it. Also, the inkey list has horrible transparency and no info on sustainability that I can find anywhere. He could have partnered with a truly sustainable company, like Plaine products. But did this instead, and I am not impressed sadly.

Nobody knows because Hyram refuses to be transparent and the website is very inconsistent. They're claimed their "ambition" is to donate 10% of their profits but that's textbook corporate speech for "we want to hike up our prices and benefit from green marketing without sacrificing any of our yacht money". And they benefit from using our languages to market things as exotic and interesting. The irony of using “selfless” as a brand name only highlights his arrogance. I also dislike the packaging, it’s definitely boring and very similar to the Coola packaging. The price point is too expensive for his audience as well, specially for such small products. I don’t like the fact that he has built his platform by criticising people, particularly women, a shadiness for using something that he dislikes, that I don’t enjoy. His Cerave secretive sponsorship, the fact that he rarely ever shows himself using the products he recommends. I won’t support Hyram. Thank you Cassandra for being honest with us.

I don’t understand everyone hopping on the bandwagon saying “white saviour” if he were to do nothing at all people would be mad, but when he tries to make change it’s an issue? What are people supposed to do when nothing ever good enough?

@@David-zj1ji it’s the way he goes about it, the stock images of Africa in his commercials, the “ambition” to donate, the selfless title for the brand. I understand being frustrated that no matter what ones does we can never please everyone, but many many people are upset about this. One person’s intuition and analysis could be wrong but hundreds of people have similar thoughts about the brand and Hyram. So if you feel his efforts are good enough for you that’s okay, not everyone will think the same.

Can we talk about how that packaging is going to be AWFUL on arthritic hands or people with disabilities AND how regulating the amount that you need to use makes this inaccessible to people with dry skin? I had really high hopes of this line and I feel really dissapointed. First and foremost, it's none of the brand's business how much product I use, and as someone with very dry skin, I'm literally being punished for having to always use a greater amount of product than they planned. It's like my very existence wasn't planned for by them, and so I have to squeeze a tube till my hands hurt to get the amount of product I need. Especially with the moisturiser. This is insulting. You literally pay them, 20 dollars so they can tell you you don't exist. "Well then, just don't buy it! It's meant for oily skin obviously." yes, exactly. I thought this line was supposed to be for EVERYONE, but it looks like all the products are targeted at oily skin alone. And I feel like industry-wide, there is a discussion to be had about how in recent years there has been an industry-wide amnesia about the existence of dry skin and every product nowadays seems to need a "lightweight" consistency targeted at oily skin types,leaving us without options.

That also begs the question how many people are treating their skin like its oily and making their skin produce more oil creating the very issues they're trying to achieve, my skin is combination dry, I was told for years because I had acne I couldn't possibly have dry skin and that was a crock of bull💩 I see the same trend of overexfoliation and lightweight moisturizers that had me doing that in the early 10s before a dermatologist set me straight.

exactly. i have chronic pain and my hands start to really hurt during the oil cleansing stage of my nighttime routine. It would be so much worse if I had to squeeze something that damn hard to get that tiny amount.

I understand your concerns with the difficulty getting product out and needing more product for dry skin, however the moisturiser seemed to not have this issue. I also have dry skin, and I don’t find I need larger quantity of serums, just moisturiser.

No one is making you use the products, Karen. "It's like my very existence wasn't planned for by them, " That's pretty over dramatic. You can use as much product as you want. If you want or need more, just use more. It's not that difficult.

He could’ve just came out with a normal skincare line without all this “selfless”, “green washing” overly pretentious mission statement. I’ve always thought he tried way too hard to fit into the skincare community. His content was hard to follow because he is a hypocrite. It’s just sad that people like that have millions of followers- I wish I can understand what the subscribers see in him.

Personally I have the most problem with the name and the fact that a lot of his critisism of other brands could be applied to his own which makes him seem hypocritical. I think because of the critisism he has sent other brands' way people also hold his brand to a higher standard compared to non-influencer brands, which I think is fair. And honestly if anyone should be able to take critisism it should be him since he has no problem doing it to other brands. Anyway, I appreciate your review it seemed very genuine!
