I remember our valedictorian at high school in 1970 who achieved full colours for academics in the 10th grade already, and in the final year ended with 8 distinctions when one need only do 6 subjects. She went on to university and committed suicide after two months on campus. To this day, no one could fathom the reason why. Maybe this young man had the answer she was looking for.

He's absolutely correct. I graduated from college with a 4.0 GPA, and with all the accolades you could possibly receive. Yet at the end of it, I felt tremendously empty. The struggle is real for overachievers. I sacrificed so many relationships and life experiences to get there. I ended up completely changing the direction I intended as my future career, and instead focused on family and personal growth . I ended up getting married just three years later and having four wonderful children over a ten year span. I decided to always prioritize my family (which a lot of my extended family thought was completely nuts) and not run the rat race for $$ and prestige. I ultimately became a freelance writer and a missionary. I have never looked back, although my parents have always subtly reminded me that I am a disappointment.

Do you what is best for you. I am an excellent student too but just earlier in my carrer I realized that this is not what I want. Although earning not as much as others, I am happy and enjoying simple things in life. Carreer and scholastical achivements are great for our Ego but not for our soul. And wisdom is not taught in schools,it's a lesson from experiences the life itself has given you and made you . It's more personal and much more humane and from that it makes you the best person you could ever be. Now, I have two teens I told them just choose whatever they like to achieve and just be happy.

Honestly, this is what happened during my elementary school. As a valedictorian in my elementary school, I felt... empty. It felt great. I was ecstatic when they called my name. I was shaking. I was nervous. But after I got to the stage, everything went away. Life didn't have any "happily ever after," and that experience of nothingness reminded me that. I woke up the next day with no goal in mind. I was having school breaks. I was playing video games. But I felt like something was missing. I spent the next 6 years with little to no accomplishments, I feel like I've been circling around aimlessly. Another goal's done, then what? Have another goal, but what comes after? It all just proves my endless sacrifices for obsession with grades and academic achievements. I've lost my identity. My mental health has at many times hit the lowest points in my life.

The concept of the 'rat race' is what plagues this world. But I would suggest to look inwards, think what makes you feel excited, and if you can't, try new things and find what fills you with life, not caring for societal norms, because until what point is success worth it? Don't live life wandering aimlessly, try to find what it is that excites you.

Never in a million years could I achieve a tenth of what this guy has, but I can somewhat relate because I was someone who was expected to do very well by my family. After about a year and a half of community college with no goal whatsoever in mind, I decided to stop lying to myself and just stopped going, and instead pursued my dream of playing in a band. What followed was the greatest 7 years of my life. What was a huge disappointment to my family was the greatest thing that has ever happened to me. Those days are over now and I’m back to a meaningless, depressing existence. For any young people watching this video, don’t let ANYONE decide your future for you. Do what your gut is telling you, regardless of anyone else’s opinion. Whatever social or financial status you gain from pursuing the career you’re “supposed” to pursue will never, and I mean NEVER fill the gaping void of regret left by giving up on your dreams. It will eat away at your soul every time you close your eyes to go to sleep.

Just 4 days ago, I graduated being among the top 5 of my class and instead of celebrating, I was completely down because of the price I had to pay for this and the sacrifices I've made. It felt almost as if I betrayed my values and myself for this accomplishment and I'm having such a hard time to make my family and friends understand what I am feeling and that it is not a bad thing but rather a moment of clarity and sincerity I never felt before. So thank you again, your speech gave me hope!

@@liamhenson3020 Your lack of understanding for a "valedictorian" is comical. The comment I replied to says you only regret making Valedictorian your primary goal in life, and yet look at the effort required to receive the title, your name isn't taken out of a hat, you do have to make it your primary goal. Valedictorian means you have reached the highest level of academic achievement out of all the students in your class, so either you are clueless about what the title you received actually means or more likely you are a liar and never were a valedictorian. That is why the comment doesn't make sense. As for your rambling about happiness, that's completely irrelevant to what was said.

@@WxddlesHimself I don’t know what your experience with religion is. I don’t know if you happened to met someone who claimed to be religious but was just a terrible person or if you simply base your opinion off of random stuff you see on the internet. But let me tell you that in general religious people (or at least Christians and people who follow religions similar to Christianity since I can’t speak for all religions) are people who strive to a good person and help make the wold around them and the lives of others better. Of course there are bad ones but that should hardly be generalized to all of us. With a clear head and open mind you will likely find that most of the bad things about religious people aren’t even true

noblehazards problem is with your statement is that yes they aren’t meant to raise these kids but they kind of treat them that way. These people command you around telling you it’s for your own good when really looking back , that grade mattered so they got payed. It goes two ways , they faculty is rarely well supported and leads to teacher treating it like a desk job rather than nurturing a future generation. The students are filled with bullshit they will never use and that same construct for about 12 years will lead to you kids who feel like they were wronged by these systems

He just said exactly my thoughts before I entered High School. I strived in my last year of my Elementary Year and ranked 4th honor (only) in my batch after I tried so hard to be the first...I could have tried more and set my mind on the goal to be the top of the class in High School but I realized right away what I am trading for. I exactly feel every word that he is saying on the graduation. It is a regret. Relationships is way precious than a high grade in school. One will sure suffer for the other. @@junodonatus4906 That's right all the *adults* learn this lesson. But what about the children, teenagers that sacrifice their time to make friends who are clueless about society, have no idea how to interact with others just because for the better grades in hopes that they can get scholarship. Only to realise in later life that their time sacrificed during those days never mattered. Only to realise that the scholarship could be achieved even if they hadn't sacrificed their social life, just through the general steady progression and a bit of time investment near the end. Only to realise that the sacrifice he made was rather weighing him down. Worse when you don't get scholarship, you have no social life, no idea how to deal with society, awkward nerd sitting lonely. That's why, just because everyone learn in later life doesn't mean you have to keep it hidden. Isn't it better to break the cycle so that people are aware and the general life can be better?
