The police sent an undercover cop (wearing a wire) to my cousin and, long story short, said "I hear you wanna kill your ex-wife." My cousin said "WTF are you talking about??" To which the the cop said "Look, either you pay me a thousand bucks, or I'm gonna kill your whole family." He never called the cops, and that's mostly what sunk him. He was charged with conspiracy to commit murder. Convicted. He got 3 years probation (first offense), and now he has to forever answer "yes" to the job app question "Have you ever been convicted of a crime?" Plus, there were ruinous legal bills. Whole thing took about 5 years of fighting. Even now, there are some details that are unknown within the family. We all have questions he won't answer, so many of us think he was more guilty than he lets on. Bottom line- All of this could've been avoided if he hadn't joked about killing his ex.

First of all if Law and Order officer demanded bribes and threatened to kill his family he can straight up file lawsuit and get 1000s of dollars. Second no cop will kill the entire family for 1000 dollars so that threat doesn't make sense, even if he pays first he can get lawyer and police protection after filing a lawsuit. Third even if we ignore police scenario there is no possible way he get convicted based on conspiracy, Court doesn't convict on conspiracy theories but pure facts. Either he had extremely shite lawyer or there is more story some previous attempts of such threat. People don't get convicted on joking to kill someone, they get convicted if actual action happens or if there is serious threat or motive behind that purpose.

I’d bet it was more along the line of when there’s a really solid crew in a workplace (specifically restaurants too) they can get to making some really dark jokes lol
