I stumbled across this complete high-quality video and couldn't resist to upload it. Vintage Bryan Ferry from Tokyo Shibuya Nhk 9.June 1977 ! Enjoy! If you like this recording, please buy official Bryan Ferry / Roxy Music cds and dvds.
Chris Spedding. That is all. Sorry, once again - Chris Spedding. He didn't play fast. He didn't play flash. He was not a 'big' personality, so he didn't get press. He is, for my money, one of the most criminally unsung guitarists of the last fifty years. ALways playing simply, supporting the singer, the song. And when it was time for him to solo, no noodling, no bullshit - big, glorious whole notes centered around the main theme, with masterful tone and control that came straight from his fingers to you. All Hail.
Yup. Gotta agree with you on Chris Spedding. Reminds me a good bit of Earl Slick. His performance at the 2001 Apollo Concert on "Only Love" brought tears to my eyes.
Philo Brandon Sorry Philo, I don't know - but if you (or anyone reading this) finds any video of that trio PLEASE post a link in these comments! Cheers!
Jahn Xavier The playing by Chris Spedding on Love Me Madly Again just makes me want to weep. So incredibly beautiful. He totally captures the essence of the tune and what he does with it...wow...just wow. Amazing playing. I am in awe...
ADenny12 I agree. He conveys so much emotion so simply, so directly. It reminds me of a quote from the great Albert King: "If you can't say it in one note, you probably can't say it."
Opening credits + Let's Stick Together (00:18 - 03:10) Shame, Shame, Shame (03:13 - 06:37) In Your Mind (06:47 - 11:30) Casanova (11:35 - 14:35) Love Me Madly Again (14:38 - 23:02) Love Is The Drug (23:06 - 26:59) Tokyo Joe (27:06 - 30:42) This Is Tomorrow (30:44 - 34:00) A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall + Band Introduction (34:02 - 39:02) The Price Of Love (39:09 - 43:49) Closing credits + Party Doll (43:57 - 44:59)
77-80 everyone in my part of South London wanted to be Bryan Ferry. Leather box jacket, skinny tie and wedge hair cut. He was the style guru that we all wished we were.
Astounding! One of Bryan's best solo lp's (plus) live 77. Ferry, Manzanera, Paul Thompson, King Crimson's John Wetton, & Mel Collins and the amazing Chris Spedding all kickin' ass! Terrific!
When he was still a great and powerful and punchy bassist. What a shame how he was after Roxy and Uriah Heep with that Asia drivel. He lost his credentials from then on. We was great and amazingl in the first half on his career and the second half no damn good. He got fat and lazy and started playing with a thumb pick. He wanted to be a pop star. What a wastr.
Chris was a KISS player - "Keep It Simple Stupid" . He dished up loads of tone and loads of feeling and that's how he got the gig for 'This Is Tomorrow Calling" and subsequent tour....nice to see Phil backing up on 2nd chair though. You can hear how there was a cross influence at that time between Chris and Steve Jones of Pistols fame. They became good mates. Kings of the power cord.
Great stuff. Bryan is such a unique performer. Great band here. I see Manzanera and I believe that is Chris Spedding on the other guitar. I just about wore out my vinyl copy of In Your Mind. Nice to hear some of those songs done live here. By golly I think that is Paul Thompson on drums...
I can’t believe it took me eight years to find this. This is fantastic I saw this tour at the bottom line in New York City in June 77. Talking Heads opened up, it was a great show, ticket price was 6.50$ Usd. BARGAIN!! Thank you 🙏 for posting!!
Saw same in SoCal, Santa Monica Civic. Coincidence I was in town. Seats: Last Row! Lol, made up for it with first row center seats for the Roxy Reunion in 2001.
Though he made the song named 'Tokyo Joe' in 70's, that was the very Chinese music. One of the Wings members', Denny Laine's 'Japanese tears' was also based on Chinese music. I'm Japanese. I was living in U.K in early 90's when I was a little boy and was also living there from 2011 to 2014. Then I was always feeling that European people didn't know Japan. They couldn't distinguish Japan from China. Just French and Spanish people know Japan slightly better than the other European people. Because Japanese contemporary cultures such as clothing brand( Yoji Yamamoto, Issei Miyake and so on), animation, movies are accepted there.
Oh my god this is soooo goooood. Watching for the very first time [9/7/2021] - Long time Roxy Music & Bryan Ferry fan however never knew this existed. I have read as many comments here as I can and understand the master Chris Speeding is axing. And I couldn't agree more with all comments about his so under rated axe skills. And all other musicians here are at the top of their form as well. Thank you uploader O.P.D. this is so greatly appreciated. Best wishes from New Zealand.
What a line up - Phil Manzanara, Paul Thompson, Chris Spedding, John Wetton, Mel Collins!!! And the record the tour was supporting - "In Your Mind" - is one of the GREAT pop/rock records of the era - hooks, solos, great songs, great musicians - "Love Me Madly Again" is a real tour de force - Ferry's BEST solo record. Funny - in this performance, Ferry turned on the "Chinese eyes" thing. Thanks for posting this.
11 June 1977 Winterland, San Francisco, CA: Bryan Ferry, Mother's Finest, The Nuns. I was there, and it was videotaped, as so many Winterland shows were. Wonder where those tapes are now? I took a few snapshots with my cheap little camera, they didn't come out half bad. Looking forward to scanning them and at least posting them on f-bk. TTFN!
@@lindsaycrawford6540 I was at that show as well, but couldn't remember the opening acts. I saw the Nuns too many times at the Mabuhay. Free the Winterland tapes! If they can release the Sex Pistols show they can release this one as well.
. . . . . Love Chris Spedding. . . .He was doing shows at Maxes in NY city...and i'd go upstairs early see iff i could sneak into someones sound check. . . And he'd be standing at the bar. . .just like nobody. . . . . . . .
I saw this band at Massey Hall in 1977, they put on a spectacular show. My introduction to the great guitar work of Chris Spedding. Totally blown away and easily one of the best shows ever for me! Thanks for sharing!
I too saw this band in 1977, Masonic Temple in Detroit. The bit that stands out in my memory was Chris Spedding and his phenomenal playing. I took up guitar a year later and have been at it ever since. It was seeing great talents like Chris Spedding that gave me the bug.
i was hooked the first time when i heard roxy music with bryan ferry.i like his version of like a hurricane.and neil young does a great job with his live version also.good clean fun
I've never seen Bryan Ferry, nor Roxy Music in concert. Even though I have seen Yes three times, King Crimson twice, the Tubes in a 300-seat theater, Blue Oyster Cult in a 600-seat theater (and got to meet Eric Bloom afterwards), Nazareth and Thin Lizzy on the same bill, Frank Zappa, The Cramps, Iggy Pop (and got to meet him afterwards), David Bowie, Elton John in 1980 (when he was still great), Al Stewart, Rainbow, Triumph, Robin Trower, Gary Numan (and got to meet him afterwards), DEVO, Psychedelic Furs, Reverend Horton Heat (when they were STILL playing no-name clubs in Austin), Sammy Hagar (hey, I had a SMOKIN' HOT chick with me!) and a lot of really great bands, not seeing Bryan or Roxy to me is kind of a let-down. I STILL hold out hope... MAYBE. ONE day. Hell, I even missed out on Jean Michel Jarre's Houston Rendezvous because I had to work that night, and I was only 90 miles away!!!! Maybe the Concert Gods will reach down and gift me once again.
