Here we have footage of Bryce working out at both the Catcher & Shortstop position. The weather in Las Vegas was not cooperating(bad audio!), but nonetheless Baseball Factory scouts & field ops were able to workout all the players in attendance. Bryce is an 2011 graduate & featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated this week. CONGRATULATIONS to the entire Harper Family!

we all shouldn't be critiquing bryce harper's mechanics, his badass leg kick is what got him drafted 1st round 1st overall and it's what got him playing in the MLB at age 19, the guy is unreal. there will never be another ball player as good as harp

shortstop: when fielding he kept his top hand over the ball and he got around the ball and kept it left of centre which is very well done. Arm action changes for everybody. Probably didn't need to go to ground on the back hand, if he had taken a better route it would look cleaner. Hitting: look he has pure talent, but that drift needs to be fixed, it's gonna affect him when the pitchers get quicker. He has raw power, good rotation, fast hands and good bat path.

@MegaBaseball29 I disagree he double taps easy throws and does not look comfortable at all. He is obviously athletic and rangy but SS does not appear like a good position. I think they have him playing outfield in the minors because of his speed. But dude is a very gifted catcher and a dynamic hitter.

The catcher doesn't necessarily have to "catch" every bad throw. He just has to stop it from getting behind him and letting the runner take an extra base.

@hilerc
@hilerc 12 лет назад
i agree that he is by no means, "the chosen one", but i wouldn't call him a bad infielder at all. I am currently a college prospect for baseball and i can tell you that almost every professional infielder has at least that low of an arm slot. sure it's less accurate but you can get away with it when you're that good, and it provides for a much quicker release. I also don't see the double taps really at all, but i guess we just see it different ways

are you a baseball scout? have u seen this kid play catcher in a game or are you just judging him by this tryout?
@matthewberish7894
@matthewberish7894 11 лет назад
He was a good catcher and is an average outfielder as of now I see him getting alot better, but according to his father Bryce's best position is shortstop, personally I'd like to see him play there once in awhile or at third like he did occasionally in college.

***** The kid should be a senior in college. He's young. VERY YOUNG. Most kids his age are struggling to become a starter. Not to mention the fact that he has had to struggle with injuries EVERY YEAR. Cut him some slack. Once he gets to be 24-26 and he has more experience, mark my words, he'll be just as good if not better than Mike Trout. He has so much potential.

Actually some catchers do this before they stick a pitch. I am a pitcher so I don't know the specific reason, but I think it gets them in a good rhythm to be able to catch the ball and pop up quick to throw it down.

@hilerc Double tabs every throw, his arm is way to low (making throws less accurate), and he didn't even set his feet at 1:32. He has a great arm and bat, but his infield is very amateur. He's too cocky too. I just don't like people calling him "the chosen one".
