In this episode I talk with neuroscientist György Buzsáki about his new book The Brain from Inside Out. We explore how abandoning what he calls the "Outside In" approach to understanding the brain can lead to surprising new insights.

This year, I am beginning my master's degree in neuroscience and am currently one-third of the way through reading Györgi's book. I must say, I feel the ideas he presents have been constructing a framework in my thought process, which I believe will become deep-seated with me and provide me with the necessary perspective while me and my future colleagues attempt to decipher the mysterious processes of the brain.

New insights? In my view, the inside-out model changes everything -- from the nature of consciousness, perceived "reality" and "free will", to the diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric/mental illnesses. It potentially explains a lot. I'm interested in the psychology of poverty and can, quite dimly, see its possible applications. Most scientific literature, however, is predicated on the outside-in model and one can only guess their actual contributions to knowledge. I've invested a lot of time, cognitive effort and expense in the latter but am happy that this revolutionary line of thinking exists if it provides a much better understanding of how the brain actually works.
