BSA A65 engine with tractor small end bush used as timing side bush trial reassembly for checking.

This is the engine which came from a complete, running machine which vibrated badly and turned out to have a big split across the front of the cylinder barrels on the left side.
It was with great trepidation that I made an attempt at a trial reassembly of the crankcases with the reground crank journal in the very close fitting timing side bush, which originates from a tractor engine's small end bush. As it turned out, I needn't have worried!

I can't believe they missed that crack especially after they found extra ones! I've been following this particular rebuild with interest, and now the end has been delayed again... It's like a cliffhanger ending in a soap opera 😊

Interesting one this isn't it, I'm seeing similar in older 80's & 90's restorations that were poorly done and the bikes never really used but come to light these days as "barn finds" and from deceased estates as the kids sell "dads bike" that he rebuilt/restored 30+ years ago. I like the Tractor small end idea for the bush, never seen that used before, i really hope it works ok. Cracked cases are common like stripped threads really, properly repaired no worries, undoing previous "bodges" is what i spend most of my time on these days, great work mate!

Hi Herman, the Ford 5000 was quite popular in the USA too, I believe.

It is and reasonable at about 10 bucks. My question is often wrist/gudgeon pins on those are hardened so is that bush harder than the originals used on the a65's? Probably not as hard as the one piece phosphor bronze ones popular with vendors (and expensive)

Ok Paul but dont forget the revs in a diesel engine is much diferent of an engine bike even these slower old ones...
@paulhenshaw4514
@paulhenshaw4514 11 месяцев назад
It is a small end bush for a fairly heavy piston from an engine which could reach around 2,500 rpm, so the strain of the reciprocating forces would probably be more than the BSA engine could throw at it, I would think.

@@paulhenshaw4514 no doubt about that the power at low revs and the inertia in this big old fashion diesel engine is much hier but the revs on a bike engine is almost twice, but these old engine now are to run slowly, not like the days they were born... i speak for miself... 👍👍

Considering you could have purchased the entire crankshaft housing (both halves) for 130 pounds (e-bay, today's price) and that your gasket surfaces don't look like they are mating that well now, welding repairs seem like a waste of time and money. When a customer wants matching numbers on their machine you can just weld over the serial number and re-stamp the old number on the replacement case. Problem solved and no one on the planet can tell the difference. Sometimes when you see collision damage like that engine has suffered, repair instead of replacement just does not make sense.

I doubt it is 'collision damage', more like the result of some mechanical failure in the past, and the gasket joining faces are still fine after welding, no problem at all and such a repair makes perfect sense to me.

@@paulhenshaw4514 hey Paul,I did up about 6 oil in frame engines and a couple of pre oil,and the crankcase top surface for cylinder base was often a bit out of step...just the way it was !!!!!

Yes but Ed,if you did a re stamp the ' font ' of the stamps would not be a match for BSA original...and these days that counts a lot... India made Enfield bullets,the old cast iron are often ground out and re stamped,to match a frame number,they know what we like here...but it never looks right and should be left alone....
