BSA A65 Lightning Clubman 15 mile test ride with occasional commentary.

With enough of the required work already done and just a few small items left to attend to, I seized an ideal opportunity for a test ride in bright, dry and fairly warm conditions, where the roads were mostly dry after a good wash from rain which took most of the road salt away. It had to be done! I was also rather pleased with how this machine ran, performed and handled, although later models had much more effective front brakes!

That was fun and the camera height was perfect. I always liked the look of a clubman, but never knew if I was the clubman type of guy. I was hoping you would discuss the riding position a little bit more, I always figured you’d be a little bit out of control with the rear sets around town. She sure is beautiful machine and you’ve got it running perfectly. Thanks.

"they've got cabbages for brains!" I nearly spat my coffee all over my monitor.

I was just thinking to myself how the handling and road holding lookes rock steady, especially on those sweeping bends, when you mentioned yourself how the weight forward seemed to slow the handling a bit!!! A very sought after BSA the Lightning Clubman nearly a latter day RGS, but not quite!! Thanks for taking us along with you.

Paul, I've just bought a 1965 lighting, but the clutch is as stiff/hard to pull/ingage. Hope you don't mind me contacting you, perhaps you could let me know your email address, thanks Mike

Sweet looking bike, mate. Cabbages for brains -- that would be a step up for some of 'em!!!!

i owned one many years ago, mine has siamese pipes, flat bars no rearsets, it was quite a quick bike but i had no end of problems with it. from continual failure of the timing side bush, gearbox, charging system never worked properly. these faults were compounded by the way i rode it and my lack of knowledge. i finally swapped it for an old escort van... well i think thats what happened to it

Was that the top spec Bsa twin before the Spitfire came along?

hi it could of been the rocket goldstar in the a10s with the rrt2 gearbox, but the a65s with the spitfire cam 68/473 later all a65s were fitted with that cam before at a65s were fitted with cam number 103

A pure motorcycle. Today's motorcycles are a collection of government regulations on 2 wheels. I so love one that isn't. From Florida USA

To be fair to trailer person they probably wanted to right turn off that main drag as quickly as possible (was it livestock?) However that sort of Pick up does tend to be bought by a certain type! Bit of 'F and Jeff' today, hope the ride improved the mood.😁

Now that was a nice ride. It’s really depressing having my bikes SORNed, can’t wait until the beginning of March The roads round there are beautiful, and so little traffic.

That is a nice bike! I think that bloke needs to get his dog under control before it or someone gets hurt.

Gorgeous toad-on-the-job in its element. I wonder if the front brake might be a bit sharper if the shoes were cleaned & re-centered. Apart from the rightly forcible comments re. dog & pickup, the wind noise drowned much of what you said. I prefer rear-sets with flat rather than ace bars. Lighten up that front end a touch, specially if your going quickly on the road, rather than racing on the track.

A different circuit than you usually ride. I'm envious that you can be out riding today, here it's between 0 to 2 deg C

It needs the twin leading brakes so much better stopping power. My Triumph Tr-6 with a hard tail and magneto weighs almost nothing so it stops on a dime.

Cantankerous clutches, daft dogs and pillocks in trucks, I was beginning to think it wasn't your day today. But it turned out fine, nice bike.

I’ve seen a Mini in the yard from time to time and been curious. I figured you never featured it because it’s a motorcycle channel. Now I see a Cortina out front and I’m even more curious. Maybe one day you can spend a few clips introducing us to some of the four wheel distractions you have.

Hi Phil - cars are of no interest to me and never have been, but the Mini belongs to my brother, who used to live next door and now lives further away, while the Cortina belongs to my neighbours, who are also into old stuff - tractors, bikes, cars, trucks - you name it!

That is a lovely bike Paul. I also enjoy that road when I visit my brother in Penrhiw-llan. I hope to drop by and see you sometime (arrange beforehand) later this year. Keep up the good work. I really enjoyed your explanation in the previous video why you have the 1980 cut off.

I remember my brother John telling me about a rider having his tackle ripped off on a steering damper knob like that one on the A565 Southport road when he hit a tree? It was in the sixties. The details are lost in the mists of time, not sure if it was a tall tale or not! Your lovely video just reminded me.. Nice bike, lovely quiet motor.

A friend of mine did the same trick on a big Norton single on a bit of moorland, luckily he didn't lose his jewels but they were the colours of the Rainbow for a week or two, As we said when we went to pick him up DON'T RUB THEM, COUNT THEM!!!

Ok thanks for that Paul 👍🏼was it fugi sp 70 ? And is the sound straight from the camera’s microphone ? The picture quality is great but I wonder if there is a mic adapter that can be plugged in to improve sound quality ? Not that yours is too bad 🙂

You should consider a boom microphone with at so-called Dead Cat to reduce wind noise - or a full face helmet. Otherwise the view angle was perfect and the landscape too
