Thanks Bones, Credits to the manufacturing quality of the past with this machine. And taking us through not only your steps during actual parts manufacture; and not only how but perhaps more importantly Why ! . 🤠

Some of the classic car parts I have bought are so bad I feel the manufacturer and seller are having a laugh at me, so really great to see someone making the effort to produce the parts properly! 👍

Yes rubbish quality parts are annoying.

Thanks mate, never seen a turret lathe in use with an explanation of how the stops work. Fascinating

Thanks for that comment, they are a very versatile machine aren't they.

@OzBSABantams yes they are also great to see people like yourselves building and restoring things. Was starting to loose faith in this country as we had so many talented craftsmen capable of building everything that we needed here and now we rely on imported goods. You think that covid and the associated supply crisis would have been a wake up to our leaders to ramp up manufacturing again. I've been on the tools for 40 odd years and heading into retirement and expanding my home workshop to spend more time building.

@@mauricesteer8023 More importantly it's time to teach someone so the skills aren't lost.

Brilliant video Bones, many thanks indeed. That turret lathe is a cracker. Love watching skilled craftsmen. Cheers, Peter.

I really enjoyed that Tony. Great to see you using and setting up the capstan lathe. You are right, BSA would have had rows of them making parts, likely right up to the last days. I really enjoyed your last film on the tuned pipe as well. Great stuff.

Top job. I've got some 1" Hex to make a pair for my bike too. Some of the pattern parts on offer are absolute dog toffee. Your Ward Capstan Lathe would have been one of many dotted around the various motor manufacturers across England. No doubt that BSA would have used them, probably right up to the factory closure. They got their money's worth out of those pre-war machines. Best wishes, Dean.

I'd hate to think how many of these lathes were around, with the amount of manufacturing capabilities the country had back in the day. I've been lucky to locate another batch of collets for the machine. But there wasn't a 1" Hex one in there........bugger!

@@OzBSABantams you've done well to get that machine mate and it's served you well. Certainly built to last.

Yeah, Great British Engineering. Most of the replica stuff for British bikes is rubbish. They are trading on how good they were in the past. But as you have found out, what they sell is not worth the money a lot of the time. When you return bad or wrongly sent items, it's postage back to the UK and then postage and customs again. So, like you, I make as much as possible myself on my Sprint Capstan lathe, which funny enough uses ward collects. I have the hex collects for making common imperial-size nuts. Also do bolts, studs, axles etc in stainless. Cause it rains here in Ireland. 🤣

fantastic stuff! And these machines are still capable of cost effective manufacturing. I can't afford a CNC run nor do I want 10 000 wheel nuts!
