A little tip for the youngster, Kickstart the bike with his RIGHT foot this gets your weight over the kickstart lever rather than being outboard to the right. Give it a try. Cheers Dave
notwocdivad Hi Dave , i do watch a lot of cafe racer type videos already 😊. my dad also told me that he always kicks with his right foot and he also has a lot of experience with bikes. Greetings from Hugo
Yes, starting is not like turning on a water tap. Your Left hip socket carries too much load, yet the kick backs were gentle. A push or run start suits the clip-on equipped m/c. Best of regards and time to ride.
Hi, Judging by the angle of the front brake actuating arm your front brake needs new liners or the arm needs moving around the splines. You should have a 90 degree angle between arm and cable when the brake is applied to give the best braking effort. No good making it go if it won't stop!!! Apaet from that you have a lovely little bike. Dave uk
+notwocdivad Hello Dave well noticed, you are right about front brakes. i do know what you mean and, we are going to install new brake liners. greetings from Hugo
I like that kickstarter lever. Looks like you didn't have to replace the kickstart quadrant inside the gearbox in order to arrive at that forward lean to the lever. If you can share, who makes that lever?
+Gregory Garland Hi Gregory, Thanks for the reaction, The kickstart lever is standard BSA. We've heated the kickstart lever till it is glowing red from the heat and then bend it in the vice till it had the correct angle. greeting from Hugo
Hi Hugo, A B50 piston, have you had any problems with the cylinder or bottom half of the engine, and did you use a decompression plate. The bike sounds wonderful. I have just started to build a B31 caffe racer.
+mike judd Hello Mike, thanks for the comment it's a B33 cilinder with a B33 cilinderhead. the cilinder has new cilinderliner that fits a B50 piston. in your case with the original B31 cilinder the cilinder wall is thick enough to drill out your cilinder so it can fit B44 piston. i have on my own engine a decompression of 3 mm. i hope it works for you greeting from hugo
When I was that age it was the only way to start a bike and I certainly never did it like that, nor did anyone else. Just saying that knowledge gets lost and I was surprised that no one showed you the right way to do it.
I did not mean it as a criticism, just looked odd to me, but as I say, I was brought up kicking bikes to start them so it comes natural to me. having said that, I'm very grateful for the electric start on both of my bikes. But you keep doing what ever you need to do, just keep riding bikes.
Te gekke fiets man!
If you kick on compression stroke, you are likely to get kicked! Do it on exhaust stroke to gather some momentum and it will start as it should. Allso, you don't need as much force.
Andreas Siegler Thanks for the comment , you are right but, the timing of the ignition is not adjustable because of replacement of Lucas magneto, and that why it kicks back if you want to start it.
Gently ease the engine over compression, and then one firm downward stroke , past the quadrant on the kickstart mechanism, and there'll be NO kickback!
Starting bikes on the center stand was never a good idea. Doing it on a 70 year old one is begging for a busted lug which no one will want to repair with the engine in the frame.
