Boston Style Racing How to port an 09-13 Yamaha R1.
How to rebuild, port polish and increase compression.
It's not all about going faster, (which it will) but it will just plain run better and smoother, making it more fun.
This same technique will work for any internal combustion engine.

Wow...exactly what I was looking for...my R1 was running hot...and had contaminated oil...blew the head gasket....the head is off...time for a rebuild..new seals, lapped the valves,deck the head and port and polished....first time try this,definitely taking my time. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!!!

Funny, I contacted Graves, about doing porting. Went back and forth with Chuck a few times and then never heard from him again. Price was never discussed, he just sounded like he was happy with what he had. Apparently there's room for improvement.

I have seen some CNC dimple porting that has the surface texture of a golf ball. Golf balls are dimpled for less air resistance. I don't believe polishing the ports gives any advantage. Also ports that are too big don't work well, (loss of velocity / inertia). Like John Boston said, common sense!!!!!SO USE IT. From what he has said in this video, I can tell he knows what he's doing. I have ported about 20 cylinder heads in my life time. Also engines don't truly pull air, The piston creates a void with negative pressure or vacuum, which then the positive pressure of the atmosphere must equalize with the said void filling the cylinder, if looked at this way, it should be said that the atmosphere pushes air into the cylinder. Words create thought, correct words empower. I hope I didn't make a fool out of myself with what I just posted. LOL. Yahoo!!!! LIFE IS SHORT HAVE FUN.

julio lausell I have to agree with all of that. It's few people that understand what you just said but I don't think that makes you a fool. Thanks for the comment!

Thank You John. I never thought you would comment on what I said. I like your work, those ports look really good. People should hire you to do their ports. Porting done correctly gives more bang for the buck than other mods... I once cut down the valve guides flush with the port. it worked on my 94' gsxr 750cc big bore to 883cc ( cosworth pistons, 39 keihin carbs ) but my 2000 gsxr 750 had two failures from the valve tip snapping off from what I think was valve vibration or oscillation, dropping the valve into the cylinder (total destruction). Older motors tend to have thicker valve stems. Thanks for your video. Porting when you know what you are doing is very satisfying, to the person doing it and the person enjoying the new found power. Take care John.

julio lausell Julio, I try to respond to all comments. Yours deserves a reply more so than others because you obviously know what you're talking about. It's funny how people will spend thousands of dollars on an exhaust and other bits that won't make the same difference that a good port job will do. I guess it's because you can't see the work and most people are into appearances. I've reduced the valve guides a few times and haven't lost any valves yet... I'm hoping to find more people that want work done so I can make more videos. I ported (and completely built) my 2008 Suzuki DR650 but didn't think to make a video out of it at the time. I made a 49% power increase on that bike! It is the second most powerful DR in the world! I did the port work on the number 1 most powerful DR also.

julio lausell I don't mind the tips. Hopefully they can help anyone reading these comments. I need a new project. I've done a few heads that the customers have never got onto the road. I'm not sure why, out of money, lost interest....Who knows? I'd like to buy a new project but I'm not in a position to do so. I could work my 2012 MV Agusta F4 but it's real expensive and still under warranty. Also that bike is so rare that I'm not sure it would motivate very many people.

This was one of the better porting jobs I've seen! I've only had one head done and it doesn't look anything like this. As far as gasket matching, do you "special order" your gaskets or do you use OEM and scribe them to the port job?
@wfofz1
@wfofz1 7 лет назад
I use OEM. I usually use the boots that will go back on the head. If those have room for improvement I can adjust them as well. My favorite way to do it is to look at the intake system as a whole. Decide if the airbox can be enlarged, or otherwise optimized for flow. Then match that to ported throttle bodies that in turn will be matched to the cylinder head.

Excellent work BSR!!!! Looks better than what Graves is offering. Was this Roger's (cr2011r1) head he sent you? Also, do you mill the head and valves, or know someone locally? If I score some Graves cams I'm driving down and dropping my head off to you!!!
@goldeneyelbc
@goldeneyelbc 11 лет назад
Yes, I'm iGoldeneye on the R1 and Gravesport forums. I had an '06 we spoke about p&p, I've since picked up a '12... Roger gave me the magic numbers for milling, head gasket, and cam degree, but I wonder if anyone can reprofile OEM camshafts to a certain spec?
@wfofz1
@wfofz1 11 лет назад
This was Roger's head. I do have a local guy that cuts valves and mills for me. About the Graves comparison; I agree, I only know of one person that does better work but it cost. If money's no object let me know and I'll give his contact info. Honestly, if i could afford it I'd send my work to him. Do I know you from online?

what about the edge in the combustion chamber around the valve, isn't it worth fixing? it looks great what you have done.
@wfofz1
@wfofz1 7 лет назад
Thanks! That's called un shrouding the valves. Sometimes I'll remove a little material there. I don't remove much because I think it's more important to maintain the compression ratio.

Great video..Does port cylinder heads, make a motor vehicle heavier on fuel consumption.. or Not..??
@wfofz1
@wfofz1 5 лет назад
No. It actually uses less fuel because it runs more efficiently. At least every motor I've ever worked on was running rich until being adjusted with a custom fuel map.

The work you've done on this head does this help top end or low to mid, thanks?
@wfofz1
@wfofz1 4 года назад
About 10-12HP peak but also good gains all throughout the rev range. It's definitely not a all on top mod. This is something that will be very easy to notice every time you ride (even at school zone speeds). It will be much freer revving.
