the “Blackface” Fender Twin Reverb is widely popular for being a reliable hi-end powerful amplifier that suits the needs of many jazz, country, blues and rock guitar players.
In mid-1967 the Fender Twin Reverb underwent a cosmetic restyling and was given the “silverface” or silver panel look that would become a trademark of the following decade.
A few months after the new cosmetics were introduced, some changes were also made under the hood.
The early Fender silverface amplifiers made between mid-1967 and mid-1969 had an aluminium trim or thin frame surrounding the speaker grill cloth edges, they are usually nicknamed "drip edge" models. The transitional features of these amplifiers deserve some investigation!

I prefer the Sure SM57, and after many amps the last 60 years I own three 1978 Fender Twin Reverbs. Using only one, with one as a back up and if one goes into the shop, I still have a back up. I use an ADA preamp in front of the twins, and if I want to go above 1 and a half, nobody likes me. But it is awesome. You can hear my guitars going through my rig and using an SM57at'; RU-vid, Joe Logsdon & Company.

But what about all the forum guys that will cry about the "brown turd" caps...LOL These are in all the coveted drip edge and early 70's amps and sound just fine. But unfortunately many replace with "tone sucking" orange drop caps cuz they follow the other sheep on the forums. I have a 73 DR with brown and blue blobs and it sounds great. Also a 70 Champ with brown blobs and it sounds great. I've had others too. I just want to be clear that these are fine componants. Thank you and goodnight!

I just converted my 73 to AC568. Loving it so far. I actually like the fact it has slightly less headroom and I like the chime. Instant Keef. Liking it more than AB763!
@BobsToneReview
@BobsToneReview 2 года назад
Sure, it's a matter of personal taste after all... Only I'm pretty convinced that the AB763 has earlier breakup than AC568.
@cgavin1
@cgavin1 2 года назад
@@BobsToneReview I guess it depends on a lot of variables. My understanding is that the lower values in the silverface era phase inverter and the dropping resistors contribute to much more power tube distortion and less blocking distortion and flub. Anyway this amp the AC568 was the "Brown Sugar" tone. Check out: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sVBfyt6PP9o.html You won't get that sound from AB763.

Bellissimo video e grande tono la LP con i soap bar e il Twin. Ma toglimi una curiosità, stavi usando un pedale? perché si vede che il volume è a 3 mentre il suono è bello saturato e comunque perfettamente definito.

Did you change to blue caps? How does the amp sound now? Can you tell the difference? Does it sound more Fenderey? Was it worth it to make the changes?
@BobsToneReview
@BobsToneReview 2 года назад
Hello Robert, I kept the original caps, which sound owesome. They are the first generation non-blue caps. The changes in the circuit were not dramatic, consisted only in dropping a few resistors. Honestly I could not state that I noticed significant changes; in fact the circuit was already very close to blackface specs. Without the CBS resistors the amp should be more prone to breakup... but it's hard to breakup a Fender Twin Reverb anyway! : )
@robertdurrwachter
@robertdurrwachter 2 года назад
@@BobsToneReview I've got one just like yours in excellent condition! Problem is I don't think it sounds very Fenderey! Doesn't really sound like a Fender. Not much chime or spank. It has Utah speakers. Thought maybe if I put some JBLs or Jensen speakers in it I would get what I'm looking . What do you think? Thank you for your comments!

You don't need to change the caps! Stop following guys on forums that are cork sniffers and repeat things worse than a parrot. I've replaced brown blob caps with blue Sozos and I can't hear any difference. Amps with brown and blue blobs got extra wax on the boards which collects dirt and can causevoltage to leak across it thus people blame the caps; a simple fix is reflowing the solder and the wax mels away a little thus stopping the leakage. I think I'm guilty of replacing a cap or two for this reason unnessecarily. It's not common knowledge. You can also shave some of the waz off by the caps too. I had a 73 Champ that sounded too bright to me. A tech friend was going over it and we just for fun replaced the brown caps with orange drops and it sounded really sterile and even tinnier. I totally stay clear of old amps where the bypass cpas are replaced with orange drops - it shows ignorance and also other unnecessary mods. The only caps the *usually need replaing are the electrolytic caps for power supplu (filter caps) and small ones on the board, they won't affect tone really if done with correct values. Always check for blown resistors too and if the good old fat brown resistors are replaced with tiny blue ones. They won't really affect much but you can get NOS resistors on Ebay cheap.

@BobsToneReview 4 года назад

@umanile
@umanile 4 года назад
@@BobsToneReview Accidenti, allora se non stavi usando dei pedali dovevi essere davvero alto per aver quel distorto! Ho sempre adorato il twin reverb, ma è un ampli che ha davvero troppa "potenza di fuoco!"
@BobsToneReview
@BobsToneReview 4 года назад
Ottima osservazione @@umanile!

it's crazy that the Dual Showman isn't a more popular amp... it's the exact same as the Twin but in head form, so easily choose whatever cab you want, and it's wayyyy lighter.

Good point Charles; while the brownface Showman is quite popular among vintage Fender enthusiasts, the silverface dual showman is not really sought after.

@@BobsToneReview The Blackface is sought after, just like any other blackface. (And the drip edge silverface is just a blackface). Still, just talking about Twins in general... I'd much rather have a Dual Showman with choice of cab and lighter weight.
