That's why we say that the BTS rap line is the real deal. They know their stuff and they honestly loved the craft and the genre even before they got together. Just the amount of respect they show for those who came before them by making a song like Hip Hop Lover says so much about them. Also love that you recognise the value of that. 💜

This is the song where they show the difference from cultural appropriation vs cultural appreciation. BTS loves appreciates and educates themselves and others about the history of hip hop. They sing how much they love it and give respect to those that came before them. Honestly how many of today’s mumble rappers show this much respect for the history? From the earliest albums BTS was making sings like this. Live this slaps even more, the balance between the 3 rappers verses and the vocal lines melodies is great. Epik High is one of their biggest Korean rap influences and Suga has produced for them, the song Eternal Sunshine (he was on tour and didn’t have time to do a feature too), and RM has worked with the, on songs too like All Day.

I couldn’t say it better. There are rappers who never listened to rap before. How does that even make sense?

How seriously BTS took rap (as well as how talented the rapline is) is one of the main reasons why I'm qn ARMY. it was a done deal for many people after listening to HipHop lover. I had never encountered anyone in kpop who was this genuine abt their love and appreciation for hiphop. No one who STUDIED the genre the way BTS did. And one thing that I found really special with qlm the members is how much they love music and how passionate they are. Like you said, I feel so proud to know hiphop had traveled the globe to inspire the rapline in the way they laid it out (lyrically) in this song. Yoongi saying hiphop is his everything and if loving this culture is a sin he'd gladly die 100 times is everything!

"It's cool hearing someone an ocean away from me going through the same thing" ... there's something so magical about how music really is this global language, it can reach around the world, touching people from all cultures, and help us realise how many experiences we have in common. Hip hop started out in one place with one group of people talking about their experiences, their words reached out and made it all the way around the globe to some kids half the world away, into their headphones, inspired them to make music, and now their words made it all the way back round the world, full circle. I dunno there's just something very powerful about that. I understand people being skeptical of BTS at first to figure out if they're authentic. And to be fair in their very early videos they were trying too hard to fit the image sometimes, but they were still kids back then just figuring it out. Having watched them grow, listened to their lyrics, and heard them talk behind the scenes about their influences, I feel like they have a true love for hip hop culture, they put in the time to learn the history and really feel the music. That's appreciation if you ask me.

Epik high is a korean hiphop trio that debuted in 2001. They are some of the earliest hiphop artists in korea. Both RM and Suga are actually friends with epik high members now and tablo, a member has collaborations with RM. Suga has also produced a track for them. Likewise, as you heard in the song J. Cole recently had a collaboration with j-hope. Jhope calls him his muse and inspiration. So you mentioned something very interesting about the format and structure of BTS songs. Early bts songs, a majority of the times used to be structured like this. 3 RAP parts with vocals featured in between. It was after 2016 that vocals became centre stage with rap featured inbetween. BUT its not actually always the case. In newer bts albums you can see them use this structure. BTS don't stick to the same format even in the same album. Also bts is showing hints of transitioning to an even newer structure... instead of having a rigid 3 part structure, their latest songs like Take Two and Yet to Come has rap parts intersecting throughout the song. Almost like chants. And somewhat reminiscent of gospel music. Which is really cool.

I love it when reactors who love hip-hop react to this song and recognize the names they mention. Like, you know they're the real deal. This is one of my favorite songs because you can see how each of the rappers experience hip-hop -- RM as a poet, J-hope as a dancer, and Suga as a musician. These three are considered as the musical pillars of BTS. In their trainee days, they would hold a crash course on hip-hop for the four singers of the group, giving them a playlist of songs to listen to.
@Dee_Guwap

I loved it for that reason. They weren’t offensive as rappers so I liked them. But hearing this I love them. Not even as musicians but people because I love people who love hip-hop!! Thank you for watching 💜!!

Glad you enjoyed this. Epik High is a K-pop group that are their elders and they all admire. One of their members, Tablo, is now featured on one of RM's song All Day off his Indigo album. I see you've already reacted to J-Hope's On the Street where he got to work with J-Cole. He has often said J-Cole is his muse.

One of my favorite Suga lines of all time is "if loving this culture is a sin, I'll die 100 times over". Most reactors skip over that, so I'm happy you caught it. I couldn't agree more with you.... the point of showcasing your culture is to invite everyone into your world. The biggest respect someone can give is appreciation of one's culture. I also agree "culture vulture" is a real thing, and the fakes should sit down. Great reaction! 💜
@meganbecker7843
@meganbecker7843 7 месяцев назад
I’m so happy you checked this out! Definitely watch the live version! To what you were saying about culture vultures: a lot of Kpop groups use black culture and rap as an aesthetic without much respect or knowledge of it. This is just another of numerous ways that BTS is different from Kpop groups. They have a deep love and understanding of the music they’re inspired by. It’s not an aesthetic to them. They always give credit and center the voices of the artists they admire and learn from. They always pay for samples (not common in the industry) and even include interviews with them on documentaries and projects. J-Hope paid Bianca Bonnie $2.7 million for the sample of Chicken Noodle Soup, a song that holds great meaning for him, then released his version for free. That’s respect. In their earliest years when they were still teens they also made the common mistake of using hip hop as more of an aesthetic (although they’ve always prioritized making their songs mean something) but they went to the US in 2014 and studied the history of Hip Hop and the impact it has on culture with some of the greats like Warren G (who really respects them) and Coolio and after that there was no more of that nonsense. Coolio called them out on it, and instead of getting upset they took it so seriously and worked hella hard to learn everything they could. This is one of the many many reasons I fuck with BTS. They are true artists.
@MariaChavez-ey5sr
@MariaChavez-ey5sr 7 месяцев назад
The way they do make mistakes but double down on learning when they stumble and come back so much stronger. Like with the misogyny for War of Hormones, they now learned to raise the bar to reflect on how to do better even if many of us don’t consider the song a problem.

They were accused of misogyny, but it wasn't a misogynistic song. It was a song about that (thankfully short) time when you first notice the opposite sex... ooooooo, girls! 😳🤯🥳 They did take the accusations seriously and worked hard to avoid even the appearance of misogyny in the future. (Girls have the same brain dead period. 😆 And it happens no matter which sex you end up being attracted to.)

3:57 epik high is Korean hip hop team of two rappers and a dj. They are 20 years together as group. They are considered OGs there. RM, Suga are big fans and friends with them. They also faced a lot of challenges and criticism because people in korea especially viewed hip hop only as this one particular direction abd epik high were doing smth else, and their lyrics were not typical gangsta rap.

not to get too messy but you will find in most kpop anything there's a lot of gimmicks. We proud cause Bangtan is anything BUT gimmicks. Writing your own lyrics, producing, making beats on your own doesn't mean you're gonna be great at it. our boys are great at it, they keep improving too. You'll enjoy their mixtapes a lot, have fun!!!!

The colour coded lyrics are helpful to learn the members voices and styles but sadly there quite few with translation issues and many that miscredit who is actually singing or rapping… there many lives that have embedded lenglish subs and hip hop lover is one of them… try and find time to watch it on your own😊 I recommend born singer live stage mix. This is a remake of jcoles born sinner. There is also a version on their proof live video from June 2022.. Thks for care and attention 💜army from canada subscribed today

Epik High is a 20 year old hip hop trio, and they are AMAZING! They are one of the first big hip hop artists in Korea. RM and Suga were in the Epik High fan club as kids, and credit them with introducing them to rap. Now, they are close personal friends. You should check out Epik High’s Rosario.

Lyric videos can have issues, like indicating the wrong member or having the words wrong, but they're a good option to give you an idea of the meaning of the song. Especially when there isn't an official MV. All but two BTS MVs have subtitles and there are fan-subbed versions of them to watch. Personally, I find it easier to watch through an MV once without subtitles, so I can focus on the visuals and then a second time, so I can focus on the lyrics. Of course, if there isn't an MV, like for this song, then a lyric video is probably your best bet, even if there are mistakes. Having a few words wrong is better than not being able to understand most of the song, to me.

Three words: American. Hustle. Life. It's a reality show BTS did in 2014 (I think the full series is available here on YT, with the English subtitles) where the boys came to the U.S. to work with a couple of hip hop's greatest (Coolio and Warren G) to learn about the culture "in-depth". They even had "homework"/assignments that they had to complete every day. In the Taylor Mari guide, when they're handing out flyers for their "no money" concert? That was actually a clip taken from American Hustle Life. At the end of the show, one of their assignments was even to re-make "Regulate" with their own words/stories...and they performed it during that concert. Also, that ending? YES! I have a little over 200,000 songs on my computer...every genre, from pretty much every language. Swedish metal? Got it. German country? Yep. Arabic folk songs? Of course. Spanish, Korean (obviously! LOL), even a few Gaelic songs...and I love them all. And that's spanning from the 40's until "now". I just love...music. 50 year old ARMY. For geography when my kids were little, my husband and I did "Family Time" a bit differently than most. We'd make "finger foods" (usually nuggets or fish sticks, with fries), spread out a blanket in the living room...call up RU-vid on the TV...and have one kid call out a country, another a music genre. So, hubby or I would type in "(Country) (music genre) Official Music Video". The "rule" was we had to pick 3 artists/groups, and then 3 songs by each of those artists/groups as we ate. June 13, 2013, one of the kids yelled out "Korea", and my youngest chose "Pop". It was only a few hours after their first song ("No More Dream") had dropped, so we were some of the first to watch the MV. Sadly couldn't do the "3 songs" part of our rule that night. LOL It's been a hell of a roller coaster ride ever since, though! Out of the 7 of us, 4 are ARMY (me, of course, and 3 of my girls). Hubby wasn't impressed at first, but over the years, he has admitted to liking a couple of their songs...son hated them...and my other daughter was more into soundtrack songs at the time (didn't matter what movie...pick one that had music and she was hooked).

Epik High: Tablo, Mithra Jin and DJ Tukutz. You can check their songs, I recommend you Lesson Zero. It's all in English ^^ Tablo studied at Stanford University and got a Bachelor's Degree in English literature and a Master's Degree in creative writing in just 4 years ;) He's (with Tiger JK) Namjoon's (RM) mentor in a way. Also if you check Epik High album titles side to side with BTS ones (or songs) you'll be surprised. Yoongi (SUGA) is also a long time fan of Tablo&co as far as calling himself highskool (fandom name). Both Namjoon and SUGA appear in old clips of Epik High performances at mmm clubs (?) or some sort of smaller venues.

Using lyrics videos is good. I'll recommend skipping the ones with more views when you search for them, because they're usually from accounts which rush out their output and have mistakes or just completely miss cultural references so a Korean idiom or reference to a legend becomes nonsense when there is an equivalent English expression which would make the lyrics more enjoyable
