The song is based on a quote by dancer Martha Graham - "A dancer dies twice, once when they stop dancing, and this first death is the most painful". It is about their fear of losing their passion for creating music and singing. I love all BTS songs because you can find the right song for whichever mood you are in - sad, happy, scared, worried, depressed - there's a BTS song to help you 💜💜💜

Black Swan is an absolute masterpiece all around. And you're exactly right, it's about their worry that they were losing their passion for music and the heavy weight on their shoulders, takes on a bit more meaning as this album was meant to be the last before their break from group activities. Black Swan is hands down in my top 5 bts songs of all time and seeing it live was life changing

@@Ashhole394 Ah, lucky! I just livestreamed it...now that I know how much the Dynamite/Butter/PTD era was weighing on them, I'm really looking forward to a next tour in a few years that brings all their solo work, that's closer to their hearts, to bear in it too. Will be AMAZING.

This is definitely one of their deeper, more personal songs. I like all of their songs for different reasons, mostly for their lyrics, they always have a deeper meaning than the surface level. If you like the vibe of this one, I would recommend Blood, Sweat and Tears as your next reaction because it's got so many deep meanings and visual symbolism. Either that or Spring Day if you want a slower song
@LPnerd

warning: DO NOT Spring Day without watching the explanation video first. It's the only one you should do this with. Spring Day memorials a tragic event in Korea and I have seen so many reactors make huge mistakes with comments prior to knowing what and why they are seeing what's in the video.

"Black Swan" is about their fear of losing their passion for music. They've always written their own lyrics, expressing their thoughts and feelings at the time. And they told us back in June that they really were experiencing a period of burnout, after going at full speed since their debut in 2013, which was why they decided to take a break from group music and explore their solo projects (they're still doing group activities outside music). We're excited about their solo projects. J-hope, one of the rappers, was the first to release an album, "Jack in the Box", back in July. A phenomenal album. The music, the lyrics, the topics, the concept, the cohesiveness. Again, self-written lyrics that reflect his thoughts about the world and about himself. These guys are true artists, not just singers or rappers or performers. Now we're even more excited for the albums from the other members.

i really love Black Swan and love it even more once i understand the meaning behind it. in 'Black Swan' Art Film version, there's this quote, "a dancer dies twice - once when they stop dancing, and this first death is the more painful." (Martha Graham). so yes, the song talked about their fear of losing their passion. BTS loves music so much. what they fear the most is not losing popularity, but losing the passion they have for music. they care a lot about their music, they always want to deliver messages through their music and they wanna make music for a long time. in the song, they said that they were afraid, they started to feel detached from music. "the heart no longer races when hearing the music play", "no song affects me anymore", "if this can no longer resonate, then like this may be how i die my first death." the song is from their album Map Of The Soul:7 where they talk about their shadows and their ego. the dark and the deepest side of themselves, their fear, their worries, their sadness, their anger, etc. the fact that they're brave to tell us those things when they reached the top.. i really appreciate them for that. also, honestly when i heard the song for the first time, i felt uneasy. the use of that kind of effects in the audio just wasn't it for me. i could barely recognize each of their voices when the Art Film was released (it was before the MV came out). but knowing the concept that this is their shadows talking, i get it. talking about one's shadow must be really uncomfortable. so, it matches the vibe of the song: beautifully daunting and haunting. thank you for this video. i love your reactions to BTS's songs😊

You actually got the song meaning correct to an extend. Black Swan is a very personal song to BTS as artists and is actually connected to their song "ON", lyrically. I highly recommend the explanation video "BTS - Black Swan MV Meaning Explained: Breakdown and Analysis" by the channel "Bookish Theories" if you wanna dive deeper into the meaning of the song.

this song is so deep and it took on a a very different meaning and significance after this year´s festa. ´´ ocean with all the lights silenced´´ is a brilliant lyric, it can be interpreted in so many ways, but anyone who ever seen one of their concerts will know what THAT means to them. Everyone likes their hype and catchy songs, but the fact that they are able to/willing to write songs like this elevates them to a whole another level IMHO this one is art and it is in my TOP3 of their songs

This song says, “The dancer dies twice. The first death is when the dancer stops dancing. And this death is much more painful,” the legendary contemporary dancer Martha Graham made its motif. Just as a dancer faces his first death when he quits dancing, it contains the fear of the moment when he will no longer be able to stand on the stage as an artist. "The more I do music, the more I fear that music will no longer give me a lot of emotion or trembling, but the moment I face my inner 'Black Swan' from the depths of my heart, I paradoxically realize that there is only music." Suga also said that if he is flying now with the wings that ARMY gave him, he wants to land slowly rather than fall. [Suga] Ayy, they say my heart is not beating no more listening to music Tryna pull up Time seems to have stopped Oh that would be my first death I been always afraid of [RM] If this makes me cry no more If you can't make my heart tremble more How could I ever die like this But what if that moment’s right now right now Ps:Black Swan is my favorite song. When I had to end my 25-year career as a contemporary dancer, I felt the same way, and this song comforted me.

This was my intro to BTS. You should see them perform it Live. :) It has to do with an artist (dancer, singer, etc.) not being able to do their art any longer for whatever reason, which is considered the first death and more painful than the real death. I think, in some ways, BTS was/is going through something like that as the group anyway. They are each doing solo albums now, which started with J-Hope's Jack-in-the-Box in July. Jimin is trained in contemporary dance, so he's doing the solo contemporary parts in Black Swan. Yes, I love BTS' versatility in genre. I may not love Every song, but I haven't heard many bad ones yet. I found them May 2021 and never looked back. They are my favorite since then.

Like your reaction video for UGH if there are lyrics that you cant digest at first listen you can always run to dkdktv for deeper lyric dive since most songs are in korean, or doolset lyrics. Aside from being one of the biggest group in the world right now they are one of the most amazing, humble people out there. such a personal song for BTS. This song is much darker than it seems. The fear of losing their passion, music. This is around the time when they seriously started feeling burn out. it's sad that they've felt such things, but you've got to appreciate their vulnerability and raw lyrics. Their pen-work is insane. The dance is incredible too, it's modern, with a mix of contemporary. It truly shows is significance through it. Black Swan is a fan favorite, it's beautiful yet dark.

I enjoy your interpretation, but Black Swan lyrically is quite sophisticated. A Black Swan is an unpredictable, unforeseen event with extreme consequences. In the case of this track, BTS is taking Jungian psychology (Black Swan is a feature song from their Map of the Soul album) and applying it to their hitting an artistic block or lack of drive to proceed within the artistic persona that they had been using effectively to achieve their dreams. The first death concept was borrowed from Martha Graham who used it to refer to a moment when dancers no longer feel the spirit within to continue the arduous pursuit of what they have always loved. The Jungian aspect is shown through the use of shadows at points in the mv. The Shadow is an unconscious part of the human psyche which hold repressed emotions and ideas. The persona is how we present ourselves to the outside world. Successful Persona in Jung's thought encounter a psychologically dissonant leakage of Shadow elements challenging their effectiveness. It is only through something Jung terms individuation that an individual can find a healthy path on which to proceed. Shadow elements need to be accepted and integrated into the conscious Psyche. Suga says in a key line "I'm in my workroom, it's my studio...I'll never get dragged away again. Inside I saw myself." So this song is way deeper than feelings of the things that challenge us during the course of living. It is about an unexpected moment which can take artistry down or open the path to a new and different chapter which literally is what BTS has committed itself to.

One thing that the guys were telling through this song was about passion towards music and about the fear of losing it somehow someday. It's also about the pressure they all have coming from themselves and others. BTS have gone through so much to get to this point of their lives while so many people have tried to tell them that they don't deserve their success and they're not real idols/artists. This song and the whole album speaks about how despite everything they've been through they still have their passion, they have each other and us armies 💜🔥

Since you've already reacted to three songs (ON, Ugh and Black Swan) from their album Map of the Soul: 7, I think this would be helpful. The Map of the Soul series reflect on Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung's theories, hence the three rappers of BTS (RM, Suga, and J-Hope) take turns with their solos -- Intro: Persona, Interlude: Shadow, and Outro: Ego -- as the album plays out. Just a side note, the EP Map of the Soul: Persona was released first, dwelling on the idea of the Persona. MOTS:7 takes out two songs (Mikrokosmos and HOME) from the EP and expands to the theories of Shadow, Ego, and more. Black Swan is the first song on the album right after Interlude: Shadow, so it is the second song on the album that really starts talking about the idea of the Shadow, which in short, is "everything that we have denied in ourselves and cast into oblivion, or rather everything that the ego has refused to associate with itself, but that we can notice in other people" [ medium.com/personal-growth/4-carl-jung-theories-explained-persona-shadow-anima-animus-the-self-4ab6df8f7971#:~:text=The%20shadow%20is%20everything%20that,%2C%20carelessness%2C%20passion%2C%20enthusiasm%2C ]. If you noticed all the shadows in the music video, it is a reference to this Shadow as well.

Hi I am back. Good reaction, ty. This one has beautiful deep meaning of their lyrics. As you notice like lines " It would be my first death. That's what I'm afraid of ." It has that emotional theme of an artist fear for losing their passion for what they do. With this song BTS dives deep into their inner selves as artists and faces the shadows they had once hidden. The song lends voice to their fears that one day music will no longer be able to move or touch them. The very moment they come face to face with the ‘Black Swan’ within themselves, however, they are stricken with a paradoxical realization that music is all they have. It is a confession of an artist who has truly learned what music means to himself. It's also inspired from Martha Graham, who said “A dancer dies twice once when they stop dancing, and this first death is more painful.” Now with the band on a break from group work and focusing more on solo projects (solo albums). We know this was also a hint to us that they were struggling. Stay safe. - 2019 ARMY NY USA 💜 Jen W said on 6/7/22 Black Swan ballet: changing from white to black swan - growing up, losing innocence. Black Swan movie - sacrificing mental and physical health to reach the top. Shadow/mirror images - self reflection.

Namjoon wrote the lyrics for Black Swan and he said in vlive that he cried during the written stage and looking at the lyrics I can understand why. It is so deep and personal. Any person who lives for making art faces: losing the passion for creating. It is a song punctuated with a heavy trap beat and sighing instrumentals. This song is from their Map of the Soul 7 album which is based off of the the book Map of the Soul by Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung. I’m the book Jung talks about the three parts of the human psyche: the Persona- how you want other people to perceive you, the shadow- all the parts of yourself that you supress i.e. weaknesses, fears, any part of yourself you don’t like or that scares you, and Ego- how you perceive yourself. In order to have inner peace (according to Jung) you have to assimilate all three aspects of yourself by facing them truthfully, no matter how painful that process may be. The album therefor has three sections with songs that address each of the three parts as BTS learns to love and accept their whole selves and teaches us how to do it too. Black swan is from the shadow section. A black swan being a metaphor for a shadow. Here they face their great fear of losing what they have now, their ability to make music and perform. At the beginning of the video the shadow is huge and has a life of it’s own, but by the end of the song they have come to terms with it and Jungkook watches as the shadow shrinks and disappears. Showing us that facing our fear is the only way to conquer it.

“Black Swan” is inspired by a quote: “A dancer dies twice. The first time is when he stops dancing and this first death is much more painful”. “Black swan” is about their fear that some day they’ll lose their passion for music and this would be their first death. They chose to use autotune in this song was to show the group's shadow (they're deepest collective fears/secrets) vocally, the fear being that they would fall out of love with their craft. It was RMs idea to use the autotune to blend their voices, (which makes sense since he adores Kanye and Kanye uses autotune on his vocals). Black swan is based on Jung's work of the map of the soul where the shadow, ego and persona (and more) are all equally important parts to a person's construct. The dance moves in particular you can see in the beginning they pluck what seems to be invisible string instruments, while at the end of the choreography they seem to be hanging by those very strings like puppets. Their shadow (fear/secret) has consumed them. Ok, so... the song draws inspiration from both the ballet (Swan Lake) in it's choreo and imagery, but also draws a lot of inspiration from the movie "Black Swan", which in turn is heavily based on the Japanese anime film "Perfect Blue". Both movies break identity and deal (in a non-obvious way) with Carl Jung's theory of the self: Persona, Ego, Shadow. In these movies, a female performer spirals into insanity as increased pressures in her career cause her to lose grip of herself and reality. “Black Swan” tells the story of Nina, a passionate ballerina (Natalie Portman) who struggles to maintain her sanity while competing for the main role (the White Swan, Odette) in “Swan Lake.” Meanwhile, “Perfect Blue” follows Mima, a former (Japanese) pop idol whose sense of reality begins to waiver as she attempts to transition into a career as a serious actress. Both stories feature a female protagonist is put in highly stressful situations and that makes them question their identity and ultimately conjure up a doppelganger that messes with their psyche (persona, shadow and ego, basically clash). Just as Nina suffers from the pressures of being a ballerina, Mima is also forced to deal with the strict expectations of being a Japanese idol. Their personal conflicts also bleed into their professional lives causing them to spiral out of control. In Nina’s case, it comes in the form of her oppressive mother and in Mima’s situation, it’s an obsessive stalker fan. At the core of the film, both protagonists have a psychological battle with themselves that results in hallucinations that blurs the lines between fiction and reality. In the end, like I said, these films break the self and deal with themes like loss of passion and the heartbreak that come with working for your dreams. Black Swan (BTS), at its core, reflects these themes. I think that Perfect Blue can be chillingly on point for BTS, since they too are idols and experience some of the things that Mima experienced as an idol and continues to go through. BTS reflect the core concepts of these movies, identity, and conceptualise them to reflect their fear of losing their passion for music and, by extension, losing themselves. They portray people who are afraid that music is all there is to them and are afraid of losing themselves if they lose their passion. And ohhhh boy, Jimin's dance haha he did train in ballet, albeit very minimally and as part of his main focus, which was contemporary and that's what he mostly trained for during high school. He is "professionally" trained in contemporary, hip-hop and idol dance. Even the members have said that Black Swan is Jimin's song, that he embodies the black swan. This is further highlighted in the 2020 MAMA version of Black Swan, where he does a duet with Jungkook! (here's the link for a breakdown of the moment twitter.com/mintynkks/status/1335236325373448192?s=20&t=2C90i3inGV9MBv5dgoiYQA Spoiler alert, since I dunno if you plan to react to the 2020MAMA performance. Which I HIGHLY recommend, it has an amazing performance of Dynamite as well). Anygays, Jimin's dance style is unique and probably near impossible to replicate since its highly influenced by his 8+ years experience in martial arts + hiphop training. +idol training + his contemporary (and minimal ballet and Korean traditional) training. He does a lot of tricking and aerials you could see with his medialuna (which is a very dangerous movement to do, because you can easily overrotate and injure your ankles) and with his movements here twitter.com/pjmgem/status/1466261374355402757?s=20&t=u_YLlw3YOrAu5eb2FaijzA and here twitter.com/jikookheart/status/1465173437589110788?s=20&t=u_YLlw3YOrAu5eb2FaijzA, during the live performance, where he basically does a one-handed cartwheel to cover more space. Black Swan is one of my favourite songs from BTS!

You are right BTS are so versatile and have lots to offer. They will keep surprising you. At some point soon you will benefit from doing the amazing intro to the 7 members by Taylor 👌

So many others have talked, in the comments, about the meaning of the song, and the Martha Graham quote, so I won't repeat it all. Instead I will answer your question. Black Swan is my favourite BTS song. It is beautiful, emotional, emotive, painful, vulnerable, and powerful - yet ultimately hopeful. It wraps itself about you Ina warm, tender, embrace that you don't want to free yourself from.💜 My second favourite is On - specifically The Kinetic Manifesto Film version (the MV is also fantastic, and hits very differently). Then there is Blood, Sweat, and Tears; Danger; Run BTS; Fake Love; N.O.; Just One Day; No More Dream; Magic Shop; Home; Not Today; Mikrokosmos; Mic Drop; House of Cards; The Truth Untold; UGH; Ddang; Dimple and Pied Piper (their live performances follow each other immediately); then whichever BTS song you can think of next. Every song you hear, you think "That's amazing. I love that song", "I have to listen to this more, it's so beautiful", "This song is so deep/emotive/emotional/has such an important meaning/the lyrics are so deep/insert amazed, and overwhelmed comment". Every time you hear a new BTS song, it often becomes your new favourite.💜 And that's all without thinking about their truly amazing, beautiful, intelligent, thought provoking, insightful, warm, supportive, tender, heartfelt, and often heartrending, solo songs and performances. I am not going to start listing them here - I promise. But it's no lie to say that BTS has something that everyone will love. It just may take time to find the one that means the most to you. But the looking is a beautiful journey. And totally worth it 💜💖

This is about losing their passion for the music and as Suga says, this is the first death and what he's always feared. I think this has been coming for a while and now they're taking a hiatus I think because they just no longer have the passion for the BTS type of music, going out on their own.

Try to watch and react on chyper pt3. Its BTS rap line, they actually have 4 part of chyper but cypher part 3 the killer one are my favorit one, the beat and the lyrics are so deep and dark

it's so fascinating to see u respond to bts strictly musically ... u have a taste of their diverse and dynamic tracks and the depth that their songs have -- can u see why bts army gets so frustrated w/ western music snubbing (i.e. radio play, grammys) ?! do u feel us bro? when the quality of music, message, and lyricism is there in spades but refuses to be acknowledged ...
